The Martins 6/10

Not moving enough to be a drama, not funny enough to be a comedy, and not clever enough to be a mix of both. Wasn't bored watching it, but won't go out of my way to see it again. Never get to genuinely feel for the characters either, and their are only about 3 laughs in the whole film. Just average across the board.

Rat Race 8/10

Was thinking of 7.5/10, but i'm being generous.

Tends to be 4/5 BIG laughs and little else, bar a couple of giggles. Also, it sometimes gets a bit too silly, even for the type of film it is. It is never concerned with cutting edge realism, isn't dramatic, and was never going to get any oscars, but it its a fun, silly film to wind down with, and to have some laughs at. I've seen it twice, and probably wouldn't mind seeing it again, but some of the big laughs that it relies on aren't as funny the second time round.

Being John Malkovich - 8.5/10

We've been doing absurdism in Drama at school, and this film certainly fit the bill. Bizarre, funny, sometimes disturbing, and home to some of the wierdest quotes (Can you imagine Cameron Diaz yelling "Suck my dick!"? If you can't, watch this film).

It's kinda funny that someone at IMDB reviewed this film and commented that it made no sense. Ah duhh...THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT!

The Girl Next Door - 8.5/10 or (***1/2) Well, I finally bought the DVD and realized two important things: 1. It was really hard to get open (dang you 20th Century Fox), and 2. Either I would love this movie or I would be on a manhunt for a few EWBers (Numbahs, you know who you are) for convincing me to spend $20. Thankfully, (for your sake) it was the former of 2. Now, on to the review.

The film has a good (but kinda disappointing) first act, with some funny parts at the beginning but still nothing quite memorable. By act 2, the film's flow gets better and better as Kidman and Danielle's love expand to a major peak by the end of the act. However, its most definite redeemer was the final act, which not only truly shows Kidman's devotion for Danielle, but finishes the film off almost perfectly with a good mix of drama and humor. I definitely recommend it, and I extend my greatest thanks to Numbahs, Beatnik, and Ringmaster for recommending me a good film.

Y Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too) - 8.5/10 or ****1/4

A superb film, excellently cast, with every single performer putting in a great performance. The story is compelling and taps into that spirit inside us all that is parallel with the characters. It is a film which makes you want to do what the characters do and go on a trip to nowhere, just to go somewhere. A wonderful film, I will get a lot of replay value out of this over the years.

Cellular: Well, it wasn't anything special, but it was a pretty fun flick. The acting was pretty solid and the movie had a nice blend of the action/thriller/drama with a little toss of comedy every now and then. Good, good stuff. 7/10

Open Water - 1/10

What a piece of shit that was. They try and make seem all edgy and 'real' with the camera style, but it actually makes it look shit. Then they try and capture the emotions of the audience, but the dialogue is so shit that the entire cinema just laughed at them. Then the worst thing about the film...

...IT'S A SHARK FILM WITHOUT ANY VISUAL SHARK ATTACKS!!

You see old C-List Actor Magee drop under the water and apparently he's been bitten. There's blood everywhere and a hoard of sharks, but they don't attack. Eventually they float there through the night and until he dies, she lets him float off, THEN he's eaten by a shark. Now that's she's finally let him go, they attack, because you know, they are afraid of a drained woman with no weapons. Then she just ditches her tank and stuff and floats to the bottom of the sea. What I didn't understand was why the air in her lungs didn't make her float, especially as she'd dropped her weights.

If you want something just as entertaining, watch an hour of two people floating in the sea, which is actually what this film is.
