Even if Chelsea play three in the middle (Essien, Ballack, Lampard) then Sidwell is going to be competing with Makelele, Mikel and Diarra for a spot on the bench. I don't the move from his perspective. Surely Chelsea can't be offering him much more than Newcastle?

It's a stupid decision for Sidwell, but from the Chelski point of view it makes sense because half of their midfield will be away playing the African Cup of Nations in January.

Newcastle is even more of a dead end than Chelsea. Their players get sucked into this world where they're "massive" among their own fans but no-one outside of Newcastle cares at all. Parker, Duff et al are just general nobodies now
