Favourite Song/s Of The Moment

New Damage

Recommended Posts

Yeah, so I'm bored, and was just thinking of doing this so that anyone can post theirs and what not.

Just one, top 3, top 5, top 10, whatever. Up to you. Can be a decade old or out now, and you can provide info if you so choose, again up to you. What's your favourite songs of the moment?

Mine:

1. "Stay Alive" - Trapt

Downloaded this a few weeks ago from their MySpace, pretty great.

2. "Find The Real" - Alter Bridge

Got the first album a week or so ago. Great opening riff for an album. The diving low to the soaring high notes of the riff, great.

3. "One For The Road" - Artillery

Another one got from their MySpace a few weeks ago and on Guitar Hero 2. I love the riff and chorus.

Favourites of the moment...

"Sleep" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "And we used to sleep on the beach here, sleep overnight..they don't do that anymore. Things changed...you see. They don't sleep anymore on the beach." ...absolutely fucking beautiful. As much as I adore GY!BE, I never really fell utterly in love with any of their songs except Dead Flag Blues, until really recently, when this has just really captivated me. Perfection.

"The Sinking Belle" by SunnO))) & Boris - it's just....the things that make SunnO))), Boris and Jennifer Sykes great, while not actually sounding like any of them...one of the most sublime songs I've ever heard, and the perfect collaboration.

"Jackie" by Scott Walker - Has a couple of naff lyrics but, for the most part, fucking amazing. Simple as that.

"T'ain't No Sin" by Tom Waits & William S. Burroughs - Tom Waits. And William S. Burroughs. I shouldn't have to explain why that's great. "T'ain't no sin, to take off your skin, and dance around in your bones..." Speaking of which....

"The Priest They Called Him" by William S. Burroughs & Kurt Cobain - Distortion, messy guitar solos, feedback, experimentation, Burroughs' voice, rambling monologue...what's not to love?

"Fellini For Prime Minister" by George Pringle - More rambling brilliant spoken word dialogue, which brings me on to....

"El Ton" by Gindrinker - Occassionally reminiscent of The Fall...sludgy post-punk, with spoken diatribe about a murderous luchadore over the top. Wonderful.

And lastly,

"The Man That Got Away" by Judy Garland - Just because.

Freedom - Blood Stain Child

Crazy Japanese Electronic Melodic Death Metal. Believe it or not it sounds good. And the singer is an amazing screamer.

Acquiesce - Oasis

I recently began getting into Oasis and Acquiesce is probably my favorite from the many songs of theirs that I have.

May 16th - Lagwagon

Just discovered this song a week or two ago. I was feeling nostalgic so I went on Youtube and was watching the pro videos from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Rune Clifberg's video comes on and there is that magical song. Tis a great song to listen to.

1.

- By and large, First Impressions of Earth is The Strokes' weakest effort by far. But this song, the opening track, is just an amazing flash of brilliance, the band at their very best. Catchy, quirky, with Julian Casablancas' strengths as a lead vocalist being played up and his weaknesses hidden well and the actual rhythm section knocking it out of the park as usual. Beautiful pop-rock, just seamlessly done.

2. "Thinking of You" by Bonnie Pink - Ignore the Love Hina AMV. This is all Youtube had. Bonnie Pink has rekindled my love for JPop in a huge way because her music is just... everything pop should be. She plays with different styles, puts together fun vocal quirks, and never seems content with just sticking to one style. That being said, this is one of her more conventional offerings; she's more than a little familiar with acoustic guitar-driven songs, and she blends it in well with the poppy background. The moments where she just lets her vocals take a backseat to the music are particularly choice.

3.

- This is Seattle hip-hop. Smart, socially-conscious, and completely aware that they're in an area of the country that does not have an inherent hip-hop scene and deadset on fixing that. The beat here is particularly sharp, with MC Geologic's rhymes being incredibly tight and witty (if not always, um, factually true).

4.

- ... because see, I'm actually a nerdy teenage girl on the inside and so female-fronted bands that use awesome vocal harmonies make me swoon. But I love this song. It's such a silly high school song but the wonderful harmony and the almost Pixies-ish loud-quiet-loud format works really well here.

Camera Silens - Identite

This song is very catchy, and is a reason I love compilations of albums. On a whim, I decided to check out an album called "Oi, the French Collection". "French Oi? I have to check this shit out." Turns out, the album is good, and the French can produce some pretty good Oi. This song is really the best of the bunch, a very catchy song with a bit of saxophone tossed in.

Skeletonwitch - Baptized In Flames

I really dig the guitar work throughout the song, it's pretty much everything that is good about thrash metal. I can't say enough about this band, and I hope they venture into Detroit so that I can see them live.

Sacrilege - Apartheid

I think this might be my favorite band with a female vocalist. She is one of the only female's I've heard that sounds pissed off, but doesn't sound awkward doing it. Plus, I like the recording quality for this, it's pretty low-fi, but you can still hear everything that's going on. It sort of reminds me of what I would have pictured punk being before I had actually started listening to it.

Anti-Cimex - Under the Sun

One of the reasons why Sweden's punk scene was fucking awesome. Very pissed off, very intense, and very loud. It's what makes music enjoyable. There isn't much to go on about, nothing fancy here, just balls to the wall punk, but a bit more unique than your status quo punk rock.

Destroyer 666 - Eternal Glory of War

There are a few versions of this, but the one I'm referring to is from their "Phoenix Rising" album. It's a slower, bit more melodic metal song, but still brutal. I really enjoy the drum cadence in this song, there is something a bit eerie about it to me. I doubt anybody else is going to agree if they hear it for themselves, but I hear it so shut up.

The Dictators - Two Tub Man

AH, the lovely Dictators. This is rock and roll ladies and gentleman. These guys influenced the Ramones, and countless other punk bands, but somehow fly under a lot of music fans radars. The intro is especially great with Handsome Dick Manitoba proclaiming that he just beat "Verne Gagne and Dick the Bruiser daddy!" in his typical grandiloquent fashion.

English Dogs - Ambassador of Fear

One my favorite songs from one of the best bands to intertwine punk and metal. An all assault from start to finish, never missing a beat, and never failing to deliver an incredible charge of sound.

My current favourite tracks, and they'll change next week, no doubt...

Armand Van Helden - "I Want Your Soul"

Always loved his work, and this is one of the more catchier that he's done recently. Not a patch on "U Don't Know Me", but as close as he's ever gonna get.

Radiohead - "15 Step"

My favourite song off the new album so far. The first 40 seconds are probably my favourite of any song right now.

Foo Fighters - "Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running)"

Possibly the best chorus ever. I don't know why though. It sounds simple enough, and the lyrics aren't exactly ground-breaking. But it's so damn catchy, it just makes me feel warm inside.

Also...

Queens Of The Stone Age - "Sick Sick Sick"

Rage Against The Machine - "Wake Up"

Alter Bridge - "Ties That Bind"

KoRn - "Bitch We Got A Problem"
