My Favourite Songs Ever

METALMAN

Recommended Posts

I've never really understood why some people do these mega-reviews of loads of albums and massive countdowns and the like. I could never have imagined having the dedication to do it. Now I realise it may be down to exams in some part. It's amazing how much more attractive this project seems when the alternative is studying for exams.

So to whet your appetites, I shall begin with my top 92 songs of 2008. Some of them might be from 2007 or even 2006. I wouldn't know. Just pretend they are from 2008 if you notice any errors.

MY TOP 92 SONGS OF 2008. READ IT FROM THE BOTTOM UP.

1)Young Love – Mystery Jets feat. Laura Marling: I am entirely serious in making this my number one. A brilliantly catchy pop song with sweet lyrics made all the better by the presence of Laura Marling and the Jets' lead singer taking a back seat. Also 2nd Mystery Jets song in the top 10. Don't get a false impression of greatness like I did and buy their album. It is pretty dull. I was hugely disappointed.

2)Cath... - Death Cab For Cutie: Oh god I love this song. Flawless. Acoustic version is brilliant too.

3)Meeting Place – Last Shadow Puppets: I know many here say their album is shit and they are just trying and failing to be Scott Walker. Which is fair enough as their album is less than impressive. This wonderful song is a rare high though. I love it.

4)Electric Feel – MGMT: The first half of MGMT's debut album is utterly fantastic. The second half is fairly shit. This, and all other MGMT songs that feature are from that first half. This song reminds me of going to Barcelona in the summer. Which is nice.

5)Hit the Heartbrakes – Black Kids: A near perfect pop song.

6)Ice – Lights: Cheesy as fuck. I love it.

7)Inní mér syngur vitleysingur – Sigur Ros: Nobody does beauty like Sigur Ros

8)Turn Your Back – Billy Talent: Features Anti-Flag, who are shit. Somehow they still manage to make a great rock song.

9)Two Doors Down – Mystery Jets – Very 80s. Very good. My mum likes it.

10)Moab – Conor Oberst: Another song from his solo album. I would probably have put this in the top 5 actually but I can't be bothered shaking everything up.

11)You Get So Lucky – Adam Green: Faintly exotic. Very summery. There's a bit of a groove there too. Oh and trombones!

12)Cross Your Fingers – Laura Marling: For the week after hearing this song you would rarely find a moment of the day when I wasn't humming it.

13)Alright – The Subways: Charlotte Cooper sounds hot as fuck in this.

14)Her Birthday – Popular Workshop: Awesome jaggy song from an awesome jaggy album.

15)This Is The Sound of Young America: The Poems – Taken from the 2nd best Scottish album of the year. Fuck off Glasvegas!

16)Old Old Fashioned – Frightened Rabbit: Taken from the best Scottish album of the year. Fuck off Glasvegas!

17)Here's Looking At You Kid - The Gaslight Anthem: I think the Gaslight Anthem always shine brightest on their quieter songs. The Navesink banks was my favourite from Sink or Swim and this is my favourite from the 59' Sound.

18)Radio Ladio – Metronomy: Does the spelling words thing like Justice. But better. Like the British LCD Soundsystem. Probably not better though.

19)Wicked People – Mike Hale: Mike Hale seems like a sad man. Acoustic yet catchy.

20)Death To Los Campesinos! - Los Campesinos!: The slow non-album version of this song was a bit meh. The faster this song the better it is in my opinion.

21)Super Honeymoon – Owl City – Sounds a bit like the Postal Service. I love the intro of this. First 30 seconds of this is golden. Best electro intro ever. Rest of the song holds up as well.

22)Fix It – Ryan Adams: Kinda sounds like Neil Young. As everyone may know I do love Ryan Adams very much. This year's album, while still fantastic, doesn't really feature any “killer” tunes. Hence this being his highest placed. Excellent live.

23)Turnaround – The Subways: Charlotte Cooper sounds hot as fuck in this. I would break my boycott on alliterating names for her. I really would. And I wouldn't even do that for Joe Jordan.

24)Leftovers – Johnny Flynn: Fantastic song from what is probably my favourite album of the year.

25)Cobwebs – Ryan Adams: Opened his show with this. Amazing.

26)Hopscotch Willie – Steven Malkmus & The Jicks: I like listening to all of this. Even the instrumental bits. He was in Pavement you know.

27)You Don't Know Me – Ben Folds ft. Regina Spektor: Excellent, catchy tune. I was hooked after my first listen.

28)Wherefore Art Thou Elvis? - The Gaslight Anthem: Excellent tune. Something else live.

29)Ghosts – Laura Marling: Ahhhhh so sweet...Laura Marling doesn't actually look too bad with longer hair you know. Honest.

30)Where Do You Go? - Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong: This band have been overrated to fuck. This song is fantastic though.

31)Last Day of Magic – The Kills: I almost went to see them live. Purely on the basis of this song cause all their others are shit.

32)Hippy's Son – Dirty Pretty Things: Shit second album. Except from this great song. Which they gave away for free! Then made people pay for the other pish! Buzzards and Crows was good too I suppose.

33)Your New Twin Sized Bed – Death Cab For Cutie: My dad likes this song. I do too.

34)Night Terror – Laura Marling: She played this live at the Mercury Music Prize and it was stunning. About the only thing worth watching it for.

35)Weekend Wars – MGMT: When I first listened to this I thought it was David Bowie. It is more or less. Hence it being brilliant.

36)Heartbeat – Late of the Pier: Every song I have with Heartbeat(s) in it is amazing. That being the José Gonzalez one and the Robyn one. This is probably the best though. The guitar riff in the chorus is amazing beyond belief.

37)One Week Of Danger – The Virgins: Sounds a bit like Blur.

38)Back of the Van – Ladyhawke: Sounds very 80s I suppose. Like Stevie Nicks. Just not as nasal.

39)That Green Gentleman(Things Have Changed) – Panic At The Disco: Shut up. I like it.

40)Tunnels – Johnny Flynn: First song I heard by him. Still good to listen to.

41)Born Into A Light – Ryan Adams: Brilliant track to begin an album with. Probably why he began the album with it.

42)Even Cowgirls Get The Blues - The Gaslight Anthem: Bluesy song, as hinted by the title. They didn't play it live though. :(

43)Can You Come For Me – The Poems: Sweet ballad by a local band.

44)Daddy's Gone – Glasvegas: This is an amazing song with poignant lyrics. Pity the rest of the album is average at best and the singer is a mouthy cunt.

45)Góðan daginn – Sigur Ros: I can't imagine describing music by anyone other Sigur Ros as “beautiful”.

46)Teen Lovers – The Virgins: Funky song with a classic bassline.

47)Stella – Ida Maria – I love her voice. I want her to sing for my band.

48)Long Division – Death Cab For Cutie: Death Cab get rocking. This tended to be the song I'd send to friends I was trying to get into Death Cab. More often than not it succeeded.

49)Focker – Late of the Pier: This year's answer to Klaxons. Almost as good.

50)The Box – Johnny Flynn: He sings about tramps. Supported Laura Marling though it should be the other way round. Both are great however.

51)Souled Out!!! - Conor Oberst: If you like Bright Eyes you'll like this. If you don't like Bright Eyes you/ll probably like it anyway.

52)Letter From God To Man – Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip: Beardy and the other guy released a good album this year. This is my pick from it. The lyrics and concept are excellent.

53)Gobbledigook – Sigur Ros: Not your average Sigur Ros. Someone said it sounds like acoustic happy hardcore. Not far wrong.

54)Of Moons, Birds and Monsters – MGMT: Spacey and faintly psychedelic.

55)Halo – Bloc Party: Highlight from what was a fairly disappointing album.

56)We Own The Sky – M83: Epic. Good for listening to when passing out.

57)Good Arms vs Bad Arms – Frightened Rabbit: This is how Glasvegas wish they could sound. I think...

58)Sausalito – Conor Oberst: It sounds a bit like the Eagles at first. Don't worry. It's not.

59)Miss Myrtle – Albert Hammond Jr.: Catchy riff. Very strokesy as you might expect.

60)The '59 Sound – The Gaslight Anthem: Anthemic title track.

61)Girls & Boys – The Subways: Charlotte Cooper sounds hot as fuck in this.

62)Cape Kod Kwassa Kwassa – Vampire Weekend: Don't knock Vampire Weekend. I know it was a bad idea of them to promote the shitty beyond belief “Oxford Comma” as opening track and lead single but the rest of the album is pretty decent. Honest.

63)Galaxy of the Lost – Lightspeed Champion: Must admit I thought his album was pretty shit. This is excellent though.

64)Eyeless In Holloway – Johnny Flynn: What an intro! What a chorus! Accordion!

65)Take A Bow – Rihanna: I must admit I thought 2008 was a pretty poor year for mainstream pop. Apart from this at least.

66)Supernatural Superserious – R.E.M.: R.E.M.'s first good song since like 1994 or something.

67)I Will Possess Your Heart – Death Cab For Cutie: More than 8 minutes in length. Not long enough. Also good for getting your money's worth at the jukebox.

68)Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Not Nick Cave's best album. The title track is deserving of a place among his greatest though.

69)Nine In The Afternoon – Panic At The Disco – Should I be embarassed? Probably. I have another Panic At The Disco song coming up.

70)Heartbreaker – Metronomy: Good, catchy dance song. It's like it's 2007 all over again!

71)I'm Good, I'm Gone – Lykke Li: My brother of all people introduced me to this. It was on a FIFA game you see.

72)Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon: Been getting some criticism here recently. Deserving “mega-hit” though.

73)Hong King Cemetery – Johnny Flynn: Epic.

74)I Am A Believer – The Poems: Sweet.

75)Like Yesterday – Ryan Adams: Amazing live.

76)Balloons – Foals: They were crap live. Ruined this amazing song.

77)A Thousand Words – Styrofoam: Title track is a clear highlight of his 2nd album. It's alright though not as good as his first.

78)Until I Find You – Tim Vanhamel: He's Belgian. Toured with Eagles of Death Metal or something.

79)We Carry On – Portishead: Fucked up. Scary. Intense.

80)New Romantic – Laura Marling: Lyrically like Kate Nash. Musically like...Laura Marling?

81)You Bring Me Down – Blood Red Shoes: This and “Say Something, Say Anything” were the only worthwhile components of their album.

82)Dr. Yang – Ben Folds: CONNECT THE WIRES AND PLUG ME IN!!!!!

83)The Boss Americana – Albert Hammond Jr.: Summery and like the Strokes.

84)Closer – Kings of Leon: The amazing first four tracks of their new album, with this as the opener led me to expect great things of the album. I was disappointed.

85)The Enemy Are The Future – Late of the Pier: I don't get it. I like it though.

86)My Manic And I – Laura Marling: Keystone of an excellent album.

87)This Is How You Spell, "HAHAHA, We Destroyed the Hopes and Dreams of a Generation of Faux-Romantics" – Los Campesinos!: Fucking shitty title.

88)Let Us Down Easy – Ryan Adams: Seeing this live made me fall in love with it.

89)Go Easy – Ryan Adams: First of several songs from a great album.

90)Portrait of a Woman – Marvin B. Naylor: Very British folk played on a rich 12 string guitar.

91)Be My Man – Adam Green: Typical Adam Green I suppose.

92)Impatience – We Are Scientists: Rare high point in an album that was ultimately disappointing when compared to their excellent debut.

92...haha, I love the randomness of the figure.

"Cath..." agreed, I forget just how good that song was. I was full on creaming over it when the acoustic versions surfaced. I prefer it acoustic to full band, but it's still amazing. Great, great lyrics too...even if it does seem like a rehash of "Company Calls Epilogue". "Long Division" making it in too. :D That's my favourite from "Narrow Stairs".

I wanted to HATE MGMT, but they're growing on me. I still haven't checked out the album, but they're a fun band and when their tunes come on in a club, I'm 'boogie-ing on down' on the dancefloor.

Lights = Started listening to her again for the first time in a while ages. Her other songs aren't as 'insatiably catchy' as this, but it's probably the catchiest EP I've heard in a while.

Must say I'm surprised at the lack of "Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts", especially given what was said about "Here's Looking At You Kid" and "Navesink Banks". :(

Love the lots of Laura Marling. But no, "The Captain & Hourglass" or "No You're God". :( Just shows the strength of that album.

"Teen Lovers", "A Thousand Words", "We Own The Sky" etc = Weird Mike Hale choice though IMO...I find he works best at the quieter tunes.

Awesome Ben Folds choices. Although I'd have probably squeezed "Effington" in there too.

Owl City. :D What The Postal Service would sound like if they'd stayed up all night eating smarties.

A couple of nice Sigur Ros choices. Absolutely adore that album. My favourite from them.

Why are you called metalman?

There wasn't one metal song in there :P

But some good choices in there, I was surprised by the PATD album, I like the more Beatle's pop sound they've gone for, suits em. Good choices on Sigur Ros, Laura Marling and The Last Shadow Puppets.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have managed to whittle this down into a list of 100 which was pretty difficult considering I originally had a shortlist of 740. The list of 740 was basically songs on my itunes that I gave five star ratings to. I was surprised I had as many five star rated songs as I'm usually pretty harsh when I rate songs. And I rate all my songs. I think I have itunes OCD. :P

To add a further dimension onto what is basically a vanity project I think I'll do a guessing game like some other people have done with these countdowns. Basically I'll give a clue and give one point for guessing the correct artist and two points for guessing the correct song which will be recorded on a leaderboard. Can't say I'm expecting much participation. ha.

Anyway I'll begin this now:

100. Glósóli - Sigur Rós

Takk... (2005)

LISTEN

Takk.jpg

Glósóli, so Wikipedia tells me, translates into English as "Glowing Sole". That doesn't really mean much to me, but there is far, far more to Sigur Rós than poorly translate song titles. They are by no means the Icelandic version of Dragostea Din Tei. Anyhow, this song was the first to be released from "Takk...", quite possibly my favourite Sigur Rós album. It begins incredibly softly, and over the course of the song's six minutes builds up into one the most epic cadences I have ever heard.

99. San Diego Serenade - Tom Waits

The Heart of Saturday Night (1974)

LISTEN

200px-TheHeartofSaturdayNight.jpg

In a definite contrast from Glósóli, it is the lyrics that make this song. Since I've moved away from home I've found myself identifying with the first verse in particular: I never saw the morning til I stayed up all night

I never saw the sunshine til you turned out the light

I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long

It is an easily identifiable subject that is expressed so simply that is brilliant, and it is a key reason for my love of this song.

98. A Brighter Beat - Malcolm Middleton

A Brighter Beat (2007)

LISTEN

Malcolm.middleton.a.brighter.beat.single.cover.jpg

Despite loving Arab Strap, I feel Malcolm Middleton's solo work is his best material. This title track from his excellent 2007 album is a key reason why.

97. After The Gold Rush - Neil Young

After The Gold Rush (1970)

LISTEN

220px-After_the_Gold_Rush.jpg

"After The Gold Rush" is one of Neil Young's most celebrated albums and the title track is just one reason why it deserves to be so highly regarded. Despite hearing many fantastic and sometimes extravagant live versions of this song, my favourite remains the sparsely accompanied version that can be found on the album.

96. Rudie Can't Fail - The Clash

London Calling (1979)

LISTEN

200px-TheClashLondonCallingalbumcover.jpg

Some of my favourite Clash songs are the more reggae styled ones. "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais", "Guns of Brixton", and in particular, "Rudie Can't Fail." Despite being labelled as "punk", the Clash show in this song that they are so much more than that with reggae rhythms and trumpets. However, what truly makes this song great, rather than just a white reggae gimmick, is that at its core it is a brilliantly catchy pop song.

P.S. I hate "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" though. Just so you know.

CLUES

Number 95 was a single by an ex-Beatle that an Australian rock band named themselves after.

Number 94 was a Momentary Lapse of Reason from a band that were completely up themselves to say the least.

Number 93 was (jointly) written by a man who had an awkward incident involving a policeman and a public toilet.

Number 92 was by a blind man.

Number 91 was a 2005 single release by my favourite musician.

I might have to nick this concept, I've been toying with doing something like this for a while. Bloody good show.

Anyhow, all good so far. It's an odd choice of Tom Waits song, as it's one I've never really even considered, but that whole album is full of gems like that...that period, for him, and especially that album was full of lyrics that were much more simplistic and straightforward than anything he's done for years, so you do get really heart-melting phrases every now and then, and "never saw the morning til I stayed up all night/I never saw the sunshine til you turned out the light" is definitely one of them.

And again, not the Malcolm Middleton song I'd have necessarily chosen, but just the fact that it is a Malcolm Middleton track gets a thumbs up from me. And it is bloody brilliant all the same.

I'm not a huge Neil Young fan, I don't think any of his songs would make my top 100, but bloody good all the same.

Rudie Can't Fail is class. I'm not a big Clash fan any more, they just don't interest me how they used to, but it's easily one of the best tracks on London Calling.

Interested to see what the rest of this entails.

Kids is a better MGMT song than Electric Feel, which is better than Time To Pretend.

Like Death To Los Campesinos! as top 20. Possibly my favourite song of theirs. And then probably "HAHAHA, Faux-Romantics" which is a fantastic song title. Take that back.

Cath by DCFC is a beautiful, beautiful song. I don't think it's their best, I don't think it would be in the top 10 of their best for me.. but it could be my favourite. However that works. Glad to see you agree.

Dr. Yang by Ben Folds is quality. Good inclusion.

Surprised the first TGA song was "Wherefore", awesome song don't get me wrong but wouldn't have expected that to be number 1 of theirs. Seems a bit low at 28 too but it's been a good year for music. 59 Sound, Great Expectations and Casanova, Baby! off their album are probably my favourite. Too hard to order tho. Whole EP is awesome.

Billy Talent are incapable of making a bad song ever. Anti-Flag have some... okay-decent songs, and some wank. I liked them for a little while, then realised I only really liked... 5 songs maybe and that's about it.

No Mountains by Biffy Clyro? That's a disappointment for me mr. metalman. Embrace your Scottish brethren!

Good list. Would be tough for me to do because I'm more of an albums guy than an individual songs guy so I figure it must have been hard to whittle down and pick individual songs.

Right - the show must go on. (That isn't on the list by the way.)

95. Jet - Wings

Band on the Run (1973)

WATCH

Paul_McCartney_&_Wings-Band_on_the_Run_album_cover.jpg

There are a lot of people that hate Wings. I don't. This song is one of the main reasons why.

94. Learning to Fly Pink Floyd

A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987)

WATCH

An_Earthbound_Misfit_I.jpg

I generally detest Pink Floyd. However, my ex was fairly obsessed with them so I heard them a great deal. This was one of the few songs I liked. And I like it a lot.

93. Club Tropicana - Wham!

Fantastic! (1983)

WATCH

Club_Tropicana.jpg

Having Wham! on my list probably won't work wonders for my credibility. Still, it's an amazingly catchy, cheery song that I never get old of. Brings back a lot of good memories of parties and such, so it is fully deserving of its place.

92. Living for the City - Stevie Wonder

Innervisions (1973)

WATCH

Livingforthecity45.jpg

I'm a fairly big fan of Stevie Wonder. I have a couple of his albums and considered going to see him(for all of two seconds) when he came to Glasgow last year. This song is by far my favourite of his.

91. Easy Plateau - Ryan Adams

Cold Roses (2005)

WATCH

Cold_roses.jpg

Saw this live on my birthday. Oh my god.

Next up...

Number 89 was from a 2002 album by a Scottish band that featured a poet that is very popular with English teachers north of the border. "The more I say the more I keep confusing things..."

Number 88 is the second single from a popular album by an Oxford band that turned out to be one of the biggest selling of 1997.

Number 87 is a 2008 single release by a band that has already featured on this list.

Number 86 is a 2006 single by a band that share their name with a computer peripheral.

Number 85 is possibly more embarassing for me than Wham! Think "Queen of Pop". Think 1983.

Number 84 featured on an EP by a band 96% of this forum wank over.

Number 83 is my favourite song on Origin of Symmetry. Unless I have absent mindedly placed a song over this. It wasn't a single.

Number 82 is the Strokes' best song and is on their debut album. It wasn't a single.

Number 81 is a reggae tinged song by a middle aged bassist that it is cool to hate.

EPISODE THREE - THE COUNTDOWN STRIKES BACK

90. Young Love - Mystery Jets featuring Laura Marling

Twenty One (2008)

WATCH

Young_Love.jpg

A perfect pop song. Imagine my disappointment when I found out, after getting their album, that they only actually have about five good songs.

89. Tell Me Ten Words - Idlewild

The Remote Part (2002)

Theremotepart.jpg

Couldn't find a video for this. Bastard. One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums. Unfortunately they didn't play it when I saw them live. Which is ironic because I really got into this song when I was listening to all their cds again in anticipation of seeing them live.

88. Karma Police - Radiohead

OK Computer (1997)

WATCH

KarmaPolice.jpg

I'm by no means a huge Radiohead fan. There are only three Radiohead that I could listen to from start to finish without getting bored. However, it would take a while for me to get bored of this song.

87. Inní mér syngur vitleysingur - Sigur Rós

Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008)

WATCH

Sigur_medsud_600.jpg

One of my favourite songs of last year, from one of my favourite albums of last year. It is Icelandic for "Within Me A Lunatic Sings" and will will not be the last song on this list with an unpronouncable name! Also the more eagle-eyed of you might notice that it is also in the list of my top 92 songs of 2008, and several songs ranked above it will ultimately not make this list. It happens...

86. Lowlife - Scanners

Violence Is Golden (2006)

WATCH

Violence_Is_Golden-Scanners_480.jpg

I absolutely love this song. Unfortunately I've not been able to find their album anywhere and I'd dearly love to hear it. Well I saw it in HMV but I'd sooner chew off my arm than pay £15 for a CD. Anyway, it's a fantastic song.

Anyway, the next set is as follows:

Number 85 is possibly more embarassing for me than Wham! Think "Queen of Pop". Think 1983.

Number 84 featured on an EP by a band 96% of this forum wank over.

Number 83 is my favourite song on Origin of Symmetry. Unless I have absent mindedly placed a song over this. It wasn't a single.

Number 82 is the Strokes' best song and is on their debut album. It wasn't a single.

Number 81 is a reggae tinged song by a middle aged bassist that it is cool to hate.

EPISODE FOUR - YOU'LL PROBABLY THINK THESE ARE PISH

85. Holiday - Madonna

Madonna (1983)

LISTEN

Holerrday.jpg

Fuck off...<_< She's shite now but Madonna was right good in the 80s. If she retired in 1990 I would like her quite a bit.

84. Wherefore Art Thou, Elvis? - The Gaslight Anthem

Senor and the Queen (2008)

LISTEN

ACT021.jpg

When the '59 Sound album was released the world at large became obsessed with the Gaslight Anthem. However, this song, from an EP released shortly before it is my favourite of theirs by a long way. It was fantastic live.

83. Megalomania - Muse

Origin of Symmetry (2001)

LISTEN

Museoriginofsymemtryalbumcover.jpg

I can understand if some of you find this a bit dreich, as I know I did at one point. This is another song that won me over when I saw it live though. It was absolutely fantastic. And the drum fill when it kicks in...

82. Barely Legal - The Strokes

Is This It (2001)

LISTEN

Is_This_It.JPG

I know a lot of people of my age got into music through the Libertines, and while I did to a large extent, the Strokes probably had more of an impact on me and I've quite possibly listened to Is This It more than any other album I own.

81. Love Is The Seventh Wave - Sting

The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985)

LISTEN

Seventhwave.jpg

I'm sure a lot of you think Sting is a wanker. I love him though and I think his music is fantastic, particularly his solo stuff. You can blame my parents for that if you wish. I do like a bit of reggae as well.

The next lot:

Number 80 is a song about Indians or something by R.E.M.

Number 79 was the breakthrough single by a Newcastle band that aren't much good apart from that song.

Number 78 is the best song on Kings of Leon's best album. (Because of the Times that is).

Number 77 is a collaboration between the "wanker" in 81 and the guitarist for Cream.

Number 76 is an early song by a man the Last Shadow Puppets want to be.
