Sad Songs

Explicitly sad? Hmm.

- "Boxing" by Ben Folds Five

- "Little Round Mirrors" by Harvey Danger

- "Tomorrow" by Sean Lennon

- "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory" by Johnny Thunders

Of course, if it went into a general feeling of like melancholy or whatever my list would get much longer, and since I want to sleep I'm just coming up with some suggestions off the top of my head and doing a quick WinAmp scan.

Am I the only person in the world who doesn't think "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" is a sad song? It mentions 'death', is soppy and acoustic, it must be sad...it's a song about motherfucking eternal love, how's that 'sad'? If you look on the same album "Brothers On A Hotel Bed" and "What Sarah Said" in comparison are pretty bleak songs, as they basically have no 'up-side' to them...christ, this has made me realise, for the most part it's despondent Gibbard that I love the most. :shifty:

"Company Calls Epilogue" by Death Cab For Cutie

"Bigfoot" by The Weakerthans

"Finding A Light" by Aereogramme

"Never Get To Know" by Paul Baribeau

...just about everything Mike Hale has ever written, you can download his new album from my sig. :shifty: I mean, for fucks sake, his debut album was called "Broken With No Hope", you don't get much bleaker than that.

...a lot of the Electric President/Radical Face stuff is really bleak, yet surprisingly upbeat at the same time. Ben Cooper's definitely one of my favourite artists on the go at the minute, so check them out...I'd recommend the 1st/self-titled Electric President record and the 2nd Radical Face album, "Ghost".

"Open Heart Zoo" by Martin Grech

"Canoe" by Joey Cape (Honestly one of the best songs I have ever heard)

'Wherever There Is Light' - No-Man

'Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts' - Gaslight

'Hurt' - N.I.N

That'll do for me. But, as far as 'Heaven Knows I'm...' goes, it's really satirical so I don't see how it's that sad. Can't say it's ever connected to me in a sad way like I Know It's Over or 'Last Night I Dreamt..'.

Hope there's someone - Antony and the Johnsons

All the umbrellas in london, deep sea diving suit, Grand Canyon, The Saddest Story Ever Told, My Sentimental Melody, I'll Dream alone (and loads more) - The Magnetic Fields

There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths (prefer the Lucksmiths cover)

Pretty much all of Sun Kil Moon's album 'April'. Same for Bon Iver's album 'For Emma, Forever Ago'

Loads of stuff by The Pogues but especially 'A Rainy Night in Soho' as well as 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'.

I endorse Quom's endorsement of Bon Iver.

'Another Song in C' by Loudon Wainwright III

'Tecumsah Valley', 'Rake' and 'Marie' by Townes Van Zandt

'Agnes, Queen of Sorrow', 'Will You Miss Me When I Burn?' by Palace (Will Oldham) also recorded by Oldham as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

'I See A Darkness' - Johnny Cash w/Will Oldham (or just the Bonnie 'Prince' Billy version)

'Cable Hogue' by John Cale

'Spinning Away' by Brian Eno & John Cale (to me this is kind of a sad song at least)

'Flame Trees' by Cold Chisel

'Accidentally like a Martyr' by Warren Zevon

I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie

I don't find this sad, really. It's a beautiful sentiment.
