2011 ICC World Cup Thread

The ICC's decision to not only formalize a 10 team format for 2019 but also decide against any kind of qualification for 2015 is just baffling and counterproductive. Can anyone think of a valid reason why Bangladesh should be guaranteed a spot and Ireland not even given the chance to earn their way in? And how are countries like the Netherlands and Canada supposed to grow the sport domestically if they don't even have a hope of qualification? Unbelievable.

I don't like it either but hopefully there is a good qualifying system in place by 2019.

If we are going to do a 10 team World Cup they better do it in the 1992 format where all 9 teams played each other and top four went to the semi-finals.

The 10 team format is rather ridiculous. I support 12 teams with a rigorous qualifying schedule, but I also take issue with Bangladesh and Zimbabwe getting guaranteed spots. If anything I'd like a system where host and previous winner get in automatically, the next top 4 from world rankings get in, and then the next 8 have to qualify for what would amount to somewhere between 4 and 6 spots depending on the number of hosts.

I'd say give the top nine (including Bangladesh unless they become really poor opponents) and at least give the others a decent chance to prove themselves. Definitely not a fan of the 10 teams idea, mainly because the closest thing you'll have is a test-playing nation being defeated by a former test-playing nation. Plus the Kenyans, Irish and Dutch are always fun to watch as they battle some of the top teams despite not having anywhere nearly as good facilities or depth of players.

It's not the world cup anymore, but the Aussies were involved in a spectacle with Bangladesh.

Chasing down the Bangladesh total of 229, Australia:

  • Made the total in exactly 26 overs, at a shade under nine an over.
  • Shane Watson scored 80% of the runs - 185 off 96 deliveries
  • Smashed the world record of sixes in an innings (previously 12) with fifteen.

In the last five overs of the innings:

    • Ricky Ponting faced nine of the thirty deliveries, making a respectable 10.
    • Watson faced the other 21 and hit fucking SEVENTY.
    • The total of 80 came at 16 an over, and there was no powerplay. (it was the five overs AFTER the batting powerplay)
