Plotholes and other things that annoy you (Spoilers)

And since Harry Potter is a children's series it really doesn't matter, it's a staple of children's fantasy and sci-fi to introduce convenient plot elements just to keep the story movie.

They can be still fun to mention though, but don't think too hard about it.

Oh absolutely, other than the aforementioned wands changing hands thing (which was a real "what? Since when? Why has this not been the case for the last 6 and 3/4 books" moment).

But for the sake of a couple of examples, in

prisoner of azkaban they show that wizards are capable of going back in time. Why didn't someone just go back and kill Tom Riddle?

Also why couldn't Harry see the thestrals before cedric died? We know he witnessed and remembers his mum's death.

As for why he couldn't see the Thestrals after his mum died, you could argue that he didn't remember it, due to his age- he did say that he could only remember the flash of light, not the physical instance of his mum getting hit by the curse. Alternatively, you could say he didn't understand the concept of death at the time, so he wasn't really affected at the time.

But one plot point is that he didn't actually see Cedric dying, as he had his eyes closed, so technically he wouldn't be able to see them until Sirius died.

That would mean though, that he shouldn't have been able to remember ridiculousness like "Lily! It's him! Take Harry and run!" as he was just a baby then as well.

Star Trek (remake) - How did Nero and new Spock manage to maroon old Spock and Kirk on the same planet, within walking distace of each other?

1) Spock Prime had just arrived there as well, remember, Nero wanted Spock to watch Vulcan go bye-bye.

2) It can be assumed that the escape pods are designed to land towards the nearest signal for survival reasons, in this case the station that Scotty and Kinser were at.

3) Spock Prime muses that the galaxy realizes that something has been fucked up royally in the space time continuum, and is trying to get the old gang back together as quickly as possible.

In Back to the Future, Doc sends Einstein into the future by one minute. The Delorean disappears for that entire minute. We can then conclude that in this universe if you travel forward in time you cease to exist until you re-emerge.

The thing is, Doc makes it clear when sends Einstein one minute into the future that to the dog, the trip was instantaneous. Just like all of the trips Marty makes, there's no point where he's in any kind of limbo or between the space-time gap. One second he's in 1985, next second he's in 1955 or 2015 or 1885. So the reason Einstein had "disappeared," it was because Doc & Marty were "catching up" to him at that exact moment in the future.

Robert Zemeckis & Bob Gale have stated that the ending of BttF1 is a giant plot hole, because there were no expectations of the film being a hit or any sequels. They've admitted that the Marty/Jennifer stuff in Part 2 pretty much contradicts everything they established, but they went ahead anyway because they had written themselves into a corner.

The thing that always bothers me about the ending of BttF1, is the emotional goodbye Marty & Doc have at the end, basically acting like they won't see each other 2015. It bugs me because the man has a time machine and can go to any point in human history, basically he could have explored to the year 10,000 but still time return to 1985 so he can return at the exact point where left, so Marty wouldn't not have missed him at all.

Considering the Delorean has only made two trips so far, one of which very nearly changed the course of Martys history and prevented him being born, as well as almost trapping him in the past, I'd imagine that's partly an acknowledgement that time travel appears quite risky.

I should clarify. To the dog it was instantaneous, but in real time he was gone for a minute. He no longer existed until he popped out the other end.

Actually the one BTTF one that gets me is the fact that they go through the whole ordeal to power the DeLorean on steam .... when they could have just dug out the ready to go one in the mineshaft ...

How is Daniel able to win the Karate tournament with an illegal kick to the face ?

What the hell are Wolverine's pants made out of in X3 that they don't even have a snag when Jean is ripping apart the fabric of reality ?

How does Kahn remember Chekov in ST2 (original) ?

Why does the ice sink and crush Destro's base ?

Don't feed the Mogwai after midnight ... what time zone exactly ?

In the Last Crusade we see Jones almost fall to his death for stepping on the wrong letter, but the tiles he holds onto are also wrong, why didn't they crumble ?

How did the ice get into the house in Edward Scissorhands ?

Who shot Nice Guy Eddie ?

How can the T-1000 time travel ?

In the 1989 Batman at the end, Batman tells the Joker that the Joker killed his parents and the Joker says "I was just a kid" ... so does he know who Batman is ?

1) Kicks to the face are legal. Johnny uses one during the montage, as does Dutch when he faces Daniel. Punches are illegal.
2) Chekov was taking his sweet time in the can while Khan was waiting.
3) Mogwai probably operate on solar time.
4) The temple collapses if the grail is taken past a certain point, and you question the logic of this?!
5) He enclosed himself in flesh; look around when he arrives, you'll see a sphere of stuff on the ground.
6) Could be the only parents that had their kid with them that he killed.

In The Thing (1982) (No, this is not "Who got to the blood?" ), Mac takes everyone hostage to set up a blood test; using a hot wire on the theory that if some of the cells of The Thing are hurt, the whole thing will react. Okay, fine.

Well, earlier in the film, an assimilated Bennings (the bald guy, FYI :shifty: ), gets replaced, and the promptly torch the fucker with gasoline and flares. Right before this scene, the computer projects a 75% that one or more members at that base have been infected. The only one not present when the torch Bennings is Blair (Wilford Brimley). Shouldn't whoever else was replaced have freaked out like Palmer did when Mac did the test?

Chuck Season 3:

Chuck's mind is going haywire with The Intersect 2.0 in the final arc, he needs The Governor watch to make The Intersect 2.0 work appropriately and keep his mind right, but he's able to function and fight off Shaw all because he downloaded an early Intersect prototype into his head as a kid? For a show that was witty and excellent, I felt let down there.

  • 2 weeks later...

In 2 Fast 2 Furious:

At the begining, the wife/girlfriend of one of the racers says he has to win because "they have rent to pay".

1) What the fuck are you doing betting $3500 on a race when you have rent to pay,

2) Why the fuck do you have to pay rent when you can afford a pimped out RX-7?!

Chuck kind of went downhill pretty fast and made less and less sense as it went on.

What the hell was on the Island at the end of Deep Rising?
