So have Kyle Boller, Tommy Maddox, Mark Malone, Shaun King, Alex Smith, etc. Lots of awful QBs get the chance to start so don't act like Flacco being a starter somehow validates him.
My point was that Flacco had superior tools to Palko. He's bigger, stronger, has a MUCH better arm, but he couldn't beat Palko out because the Pitt coaching staff didn't think he was as good a leader as Palko.
They wouldn't release Flacco from his scholarship because they wanted to hold onto him in hopes that he would grow into more of a leadership role after Palko graduated.
Now I'm not saying Flacco can't learn those skills. But he is not natural when it comes to being poised in the pocket. Tonight was literally the first time I ever saw him play against the Steelers where he didn't tuck the ball and fall to the ground at the first sign of trouble at least once.
He has yet to show any real improvement in the areas of his game that are lacking. He still forces the ball to receivers who aren't open, he still doesn't read his progressions properly, and he still panics in the face of a pass rush.
At this point in his career, we know what Joe Flacco is. A mediocre QB with an elite NFL arm. Can he get better? Yes. Will he? I don't know.
With Flacco, the Ravens are 3-11 against Pittsburgh, Indy, and New England. Two of those wins came against backup QBs.
