I met him once when I was maybe 13. We were on a school from Belfast and went to do the tour of Old Trafford. He was in the car park as we were leaving and took the time to shake every single hand (there were 40+ of us). Always came across as a decent man.

So unless I’m forgetting someone that means only Geoff Hurst is still alive from England’s starting lineup in 1966? That generation of players have been going at quite rate recently. Shame.

Yeah, I believe so. It's just Hurst plus a handful a backup players that are still alive.

I honestly thought he had already died but then I realized I was thinking of Jack.

Whereas I'd forgotten Jack had died til I checked earlier.

Along with Bobby Moore, Charlton was the player English children were brought up to see as legends of the game. He was one of only a few English players to maintain a great reputation internationally years after his retirement.
