A very hard choice, since well all of them of directed some of the greatest films ever. I seriously can't choose, but if I had to, I'd choose Martin Scorsese.

CTHB knows his stuff. I'd have to go with Billy Wilder, too. But with Hitchcock and Welles tied for second.

However, that would be for best overall director. For best action director, I'd have to go with someone who isn't even listed: John Woo.

Kurosawa because pretty much every style utilised in cinema these days comes from him.

You watch his films and think "This is a bit cliche", then you realise that it was 40 years ago and he INVENTED all this stuff.

Character development, action, setting, mood, style, storytelling....Kurosawa is the best.

Kubrick would place second.
