Cephalic Carnage - Anomalies

Cephalic Carnage take every extreme metal genre and put it all into one album with a touch of class, mixing grind, death, doom and black, amongst others

I love me some Cephalic Carnage.

Didn't see that coming :P

I may come across as an indie faggot most of the time, but I love experimental metal, especially anything that combines heavy-as-fuck metal with jazz. A friend of mine put "Dying Will Be The Death Of Me" on a mixtape for me, and I've been in love with Cephalic Carnage ever since.

Well, not just that it was you, more that anyone in EWB mentioned it.

And check out Ephel Duath if you like experimental metal with jazz....absolute class.

1. Coldplay - X & Y My favourite Coldplay album so far, and in my opinion, an excellent piece of work.

Best Songs: "What If", "Twisted Logic", "Speed Of Sound", "Low"

2. KT Tunstall - Eye To The Telescope A breath of fresh air, Tunstall has a unique voice, and is a talented songwriter and perfomer.

Best Songs: "Other Side Of The World", "False Alarm", "Suddenly I See", "Black Horse & The Cherry Tree"

3. James Blunt - Back To Bedlam Another unique sound, Blunt's voice provides a wonderful accomplice to his haunting songs

Best Songs: "Goodbye My Lover", "You're Beautiful", "No Bravery", "High"

4. Sheryl Crow - Wildflower I've always loved Crow's work, and this year's album was no exception. A tad weak in the middle, but a some really excellent tracks pull this up into my top five.

Best Songs: "Always On Your Side", "I Know Why", "Perfect Lie", "Good Is Good"

5. David Gray - Life In Slow Motion As already mentioned, not as good as White Ladder, but better than A New Day At Midnight. Gray finally uses the full studio environment to his benefit, and the results were great

Best Songs: Nos Da Cariad, Alibi, Now & Always, Disappearing World

5. Young Jeezy - "Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101"

Nice debut for him. Some of the tracks in the middle and far back of the album are rather poor. But the first parts and 11-12-14 aren't bad. Nice beats on most of the tracks, not like the lyrics suck either.

Favourite tracks: the intro, "Go Crazy", "Bang", "And Then What"

4. Chrome - "Straight To The Pros"

The newbie to Hypnotized Minds camp. Greatly benefited from production by Juicy J and DJ Paul. Gutter shit galore, no complaints.

Favourite tracks: "So Fresh", "23 and 1", "Gutta Mane", "H.C.P."

3. The Game - "The Documentary"

Let's face it, earlier this year everyone was coppin' this shit. Bangin' this shit. This shit was all in the clubs. Even though it might be old now, it's still impressive. He's better off without the cunt 50 Cent, although production values may lag without him.

Favourite tracks: "How We Do", "Westside Story", "We Ain't", "The Documentary", "Don't Need Your Love"

2. Kanye West - "Late Registration"

Do I need to explain? Kanye is one talented rapper and producer. Too much filler and too many bad skits, or else this woulda been #1.

Favourite tracks: "Late", "Crack Music", "Addiction", "We Major", "Heard Em Say", "Gold Digger", "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" (original)

1. Three 6 Mafia - "Most Known Unknown"

Yeah. It's definitely not the best lyrically. Common, Kanye, and scores others beat it out there. However, this sounds SOLID. There's just something about it that makes me so hooked.

Favourite tracks: "Still Fly", "Got It 4 Sale", "Body Parts 3", "Side 2 Side", "Roll With It", "Dancing On A Pole", "Ain't Got Time For Gamez"

And check out Ephel Duath if you like experimental metal with jazz....absolute class.

I've heard of Ephel Duath, I've yet to hear anything by them, though. The same friend recently bought their entire back catalogue on Amazon, based solely on the fact that they were avant-garde jazz metal, so I'll probably get a listen some time soon. Your recommendation has been taken to heart.

Kanye West - Late Registration

Album of the year IMO. I've never been that into Rap/Hip-Hop, but I dig Kanye's style. There isn't a single song on the track that I don't like. I'm not a big fan of the skits, but Kanye covers so much ground on this album it's incredible.

Best Songs: Heard 'Em Say, Hey Mama, Bring Me Down

Coldplay - X&Y

Like Rabid Wolverine, this is my favorite Coldplay CD thus far. Fantastic stuff from Martin and gang. They can do the stadium rock as well as any band in the world.

Best Songs: A Message, Fix You, Swallowed in the Sea

Our Lady Peace - Healthy in Paranoid Times

I really like this direction that OLP is moving from. Healthy in Paranoid Times is definitely a breath of fresh air after Gravity. Raine's vocals are still way too gaudy, but I love many of the songs here.

Best Songs: Where Are You, Angels Falling Asleep, Boy

Switchfoot - Nothing is Sound

Surprise of the year for me. I've never been a huge fan, but after picking up this CD, I might become one. Really nice melodies here, catchy as fuck. You've got the slow ballads and the up-tempo pieces.

Best Songs: Stars, Lonely Nation, The Setting Sun

Because I remember liking them all rather equally...

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

Audioslave - Out of Exile

Kanye West - Late Registration

Foo Fighters - In Your Honor

Maybe I haven't listened much to music, but no album made me scream "Brilliant" this year. Then again, I have listened to only about 7 or 8 albums this year.

Feist - Let it Die

Stripped down, sensual pop music, with a touch of jazz and trip-hop around the edges. It kicks off with only the strums of an acoustic guitar, before Feist jumps in like an orphaned torch singer. "Well it's time to begin/as the summer sets in/It's the scene you set for new lovers," she croons.

Bruce Springsteen - Devils And Dust

I am probably the only Bruce fan on the board, but I think that this album and the subsequent tour has been one of the iconic artist's most personal offerings. The sound balances out far better than the minimalistic Tom Joad, while capturing the same sort of characters you'd find in his other acoustic works.

Our Lady Peace - Healthy in Paranoid Times

After the dissapoinment of Gravity, Maida and the rest of the band deliver a performance quite like no other. They've reached heights untouched since their Spiritual Machines Album. This latest album demonstrates why Our Lady Peace should, and hopefully will, break through in the music industry not just in Canada and North USA, but throughout the world. What greatly empowers HIPT is Raine's vocals shining through songs such as "Angels Losing Sleep" and "Picture". Our Lady Peace returned to their roots in a way, including more of the fan favorite Raine falsettos and more interesting guitar work from Mazur(and some interesting bass lines from Coutts). Maida has also grown bolder with his lyrics -- partly due to his recent humanitarian missions to Iraq and Darfur, through War Child Canada. Healthy features the single "Where Are You," an intense plea for world harmony, and "Wipe That Smile Off Your Face," a scathing anti-Bush track.

Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

Each album this band releases seems to be more intricit than the last. The guitars are wailing, the lyrics are scathing, and the vocals are... well it is Claudio.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (released simultaneously with Digital Ash in a Digital Urn) is the album the Omaha native has always threatened to make, channeling his country rock influences into articulate, witty ballads that come to life with gorgeous harmonies supplied by Emmylou Harris.
