Judging from the FM series, a player does not have to be registered to play in a friendly, ie, trial players.

He doesn't have to be registered, no. Which is how trials & such work. & clearly standing on pitchside, you'd find yrself hardpressed to say no to the manager of a football club when he's giving you the chance to play.

He called him out from the stands. Also, players on trials are still registered as trial players. I'm very sure you can't just bring on fans. I don't think I've even mentioned that this fan scored too. I actually wasn't aware it's a friendly, but it's still stupid.
