What Did You Watch Today?

Iron Man - 8/10

My second favourite superhero film behind Batman (1989) but in front of Batman Begins.

Speed Racer - 6/10

I had low expectations going in but it wasn't that bad overall. Most parts involving the young brother and the monkey were embarrassing to watch but overlooking those it was decent. It looked good but it was at least 20 minutes too long.

Shoot 'em Up - 8.5/10

The only reason this didn't get a 9, is because that'd make it as good as Planet Terror, which it wasn't. What it was, was an excellent piss-take at the action genre, whilst still managing to be a great action film itself (unlike Last Action Hero, which was shit). It also proved to me that Clive Owen can actually act, which is worth an 8.5 for that alone.

I take it you haven't seen Children of Men then? >_> Clive Owen was great in that film.

Plus, I wouldn't say that a movie like Shoot 'Em Up necessarily showcases a whole lot of acting talent...by any of the cast members.

National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets

Finished it last night. Entertaining movie, very similar to the first. Car chase sequence was pretty neat. Can't believe they didn't realize the cell phone was tapped though.

An Inconvenient Truth

It was alright. The facts presented seem solid enough, but it seemed to be a bit flimsy when put together with Al Gore's life story. Also if I'm not fully convinced about it, I can continue moaning about the pointlessness of recycling. :P

This Island Earth (1955)

For the time, This Island Earth had astonishing special effects that don't look silly by today's standards. Overall the first half of the film is great, it collapses in the second half due to a breakneck change in direction that saw the Russians aliens facing a greater force than themselves. Then there was the silly inclusion of a scary looking alien eleven minutes before the end.

Thank You For Smoking (2006)

I'm hoping to do something special to review this, for now all you need to know is that this is overrated American indie drivel made by people trying to act clever than the human race itself.

Tarantula (1955)

I can't really bad mouth horror B-films from the 1950's. It was somewhat fun to watch, but there were massive logic flaws and it ended abruptly. Oh and the woman was called Steve.... STEVE?!

To revive this thread's life.

Be Kind Rewind - 7/10

Foxy Brown - 7/10

Both are solid in their own way, even though BKR's flaws mostly have to do with what is sometimes childishly silly characters (something that is also argued as a problem in The Science of Sleep) and Foxy Brown suffers from some (slightly intentional and slightly unintentional) bad acting, but both make solid points about the state of cinema of their times. Foxy Brown was simply about getting a sexy black heroine on the screen to combat the Barbarellas of the time (though, it was also radical thinking that the head of the drug and escort company is a woman with men doing her bidding). Be Kind Rewind however speaks on the silliness of cinema's state with the fact that movie studio could consider pirates and those who remake their contents without permission evil when they're essentially regurgitating the same concepts that are only separated by millions of dollars. Gondry isn't entirely able to get his point across successfully, but makes a fun movie with some hilarious remake scenes.

Haven't posted in here for years so let's bombard it with everything I've seen over the past two weeks :shifty:

Wanted - 6/10

Meh. Seen better action films this year, it just kind of paled in comparison.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian - 5/10

Boring apart from the fight scenes, and the dialogue was cringe-worthy at times. Then again I might be the only one who hates seeing characters talk as if they're reading from a story book.

Hancock - 8/10

Twist didn't ruin the film for me, you could say I enjoyed it in spite of it I guess but the execution made up for the poor plot I thought, if that even makes sense.

The Forbidden Kingdom - 7/10

A lot better than I thought it would be and it didn't take itself too seriously.

Juno - 9/10

Ugh, I couldn't find a fault with this film other than I despised the main character and wanted to see her fail at everything :shifty:. But yeah the film was fantastic.

Definitely Maybe - 8/10

Better than most romcoms I've seen. Little girl annoyed the shit out of me but I guess she acted well and she didn't get in the way of the storyline much.

City of Men - 7.5/10

One of those rare sequel's that doesn't completely bastardize the original, City of Men is the follow up to the absolutely excellent City of God (one of my favorite films ever, easily). Fernando Meirelles, who also produced the City of Men mini-series, is back for this one, although he's just in a producing role. Although I caught a few episodes of the City of Men series, it really wasn't as engaging and, overall, a huge disappointment from City of God. This uses a lot of the same characters (the exact same? I don't know), but adds to it the theatrics and storytelling that City of God had. The story concerns two best friends, both of who are on the verge of turning 18, and both of who have currently taken an interest into their fathers, which they have never met, while all around them a gang war is erupting that will soon consume their entire neighborhood. Just about everything about it is damn well made, and the shoot outs in particular just feel so genuine and terrifying. The only thing that holds it back, in my opinion, is it's length - it's shorter than City of God, and while short, more compact stories are usually (and rightfully) preferred, the Rio de Janeiro that this series presents is such an unexplored region in American cinema and the characters so admirable that you can't help but just wish you could spend a couple of more days in their lifes. City of God clocked in at nearly a half hour more - a half hour which was very extremely well used, and wish may have just as easily ruined this movie if they truly didn't have much else of a story to tell, but I doubt that. If nothing else, they could have expanded or at least prolonged the gang war some. But, whatever. If it weren't for the standards that it's predecessor set, this could be argued to be one of the top movies of the year.

The Ruins - 6/10

A movie that does everything good, but nothing great. It's just.. there, pretty much. But I guess they did just about all that they could have with what they had. Watch it if you want a break from the typical horror movie, as it is definitely that, but I was just expecting to be creeped out a little bit more, I guess. Sentient vines invading and, in some cases, eating your body from the inside out? Think about it and tell me that doesn't creep you the fuck out. I would've loved to have seen some Cronenberg-type of violence here, that would have made it fucking great.

Does Pam Grier get naked in Foxy Brown? :pervert:

Mmhmm. :D

The nude scenes are very nice, if ridiculously gratuitous.

Sweet. See, I've only seen Coffy before and it's about a nurse-by-day-vigilante-by-night out to bring this pimp who got her 12 year old sister addicted to drugs down. It was quite good, and Pam Grier got her shiz out in a few scenes (as well as some of the pimp's ho's, some of which didn't look too bad).

Pam Grier, here's to you. Here's to you and all the films where you got naked. You should get an Academy Award just for gettin' naked.

Foxy Brown's basically the same movie, except the occupation is never revealed, the sister is replaced by an older brother who fucks some white woman, and the pimp is replaced by devilish white people. Hell, the woman who runs the whole thing even runs a brothel in the movie.

Not to mention that the film's producers originally wanted it to be a sequel to Coffy.

Mortal Kombat - 11/10

I just saw this movie, for the fifth time perhaps, today. I just cant over how immensely awesome it is. The story is crude, the dialogue is horrid, the acting is meh but it being Mortal Kombat and a cult classic just makes this movie so great. I have no idea how to explain my love for this movie but I just simply love it to bits.

I watched the Brian Deegan documentary Disposable Hero. It was pretty short, but it was good to see Deegan not play a badass and just actually act like a normal dude for once. If you like extreme sports, particularly freestyle motocross, then this gives a pretty good dose with a bit of story.

WALL-E

9/10

Just a fantastic film in all sorts of aspects, and I really didn't notice all of the "critiques" on global warming or politics that so many people like to point out in their reviews. It was just an awesome journey, and in fact, one of the best love stories I've seen in a movie for a LONG time. For an animated film about a trash-collecting robot to actually do that speaks volumes to what Pixar can do.

The Ruins - 6/10

I know what they were going for here, and on a few occassions they actually almost succeeded, but overall I just thought this movie was plodding and slow and uninspired. It did make me feel a little uneasy at times, so that was good, but for a horror film the psychological horror wasn't done well enough and the actual horror was so few and far between as to be non existent. The acting was pretty decent for the most part, and the director, a longtime cinematographer, did a great job with some really neat shots, but all in all the whole package was watchable, albeit barely.
