Why are there never any famous/good female singer/songwriters?

Other than Amy Winehouse, there are like... none.

Janis Joplin? Vashti Bunyan? Rickie Lee Jones? Hope Sandoval? Joanna Newsom? There's plenty.

A great female singer would be Jo Enckell of The Project Hate. The songs where she's the only one singing (Weep, Loveless, Godless, Flawless) are amazing. If you don't like growling, I'd recommend you just check those two aforementioned songs out. Otherwise, their later two albums has her vocals.

Mmm Beth Orton IS fantastic....Always love her contribution to the Chemical Brothers albums too.

I've been listening to quite a lot of Portishead recently...She was amazing. I also love me some Alison Goldfrapp.

Oh and add to the good female singer songwriters Bjork cos even if she's not to your taste she's obviously a musical genius and has a helluva good voice.

To further the Björk love, get as much Sugarcubes in your life as possible, especially "Cold Sweat" and "Fucking In Rhythm And Sorrow".

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of women vocalists for some reason, but she is excellent. They are as well, which helps.
