Bad Covers...

Or at least something like it.

I'm listening to "Enjoy Every Sandwitch: The Songs of Warren Zevon" a tribute album that came out after he died. Save the efforts of Spingsteen, Dylan, Jackson Brown, Don Henle, Pete Yorn and Jordon Zevon (Warren's son) it's pretty poor. With The Pixies' cover of "Ain't That Pretty At All" starting out OK but progressivly getting annoying, same with David Lindley/Ry Cooder's "Monkey Wash Donkey Rinse", Jill Sobule's "Don't Let Us Get Sick" sucks the sentiment right out of the song and the remaining efforts aren't worth talking about(less said about Adam Sandler covering "Warewolves of London" the better to be honest).

It has got me thinking of just how some covers are so terrible that they can make you hate a song you like when the orignal aritist preformed it.

An other example I can think of is Ray Charles covering "Rainy Night In Georgia". I like Ray Charles and I like Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night In Georgia" but Ray's version just...didn't work at all, I have it on a CD but I have never been able to listen to it all.

I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now.

William Shatner 'singing' anything. And of course, that cover of the Final Countdown that's almost become a meme.

Oh, and just about ANYONE covering Queen. I was Youtubing the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert last night, and even guys like Daltrey and Plant couldn't do their songs justice. George Michael and Elton John didn't do half bad, though.

George Michael did an EP with Queen that I've found that a lot of people liked, and Robbie Williams' cover of "We Are The Champions" w/ Queen wasn't bad at all.

You'll notice I excused Michael. But I've heard Robbie Williams do a few Queen songs (We Are the Champions and We Will Rock You are the only ones that come to mind immediately), and never liked them.

There is a "What I Got" cover out there that is half-decent but they switch one phrase - and only one phrase - and it angers me to no end. I don't know if bad is the right word, but "All Along the Watchtower" is covered far too often.

Is a good start. But the WORST COVER EVER is when Madonna fucked up American Pie.. she can burn in hell for that.

Is it bad that I find about 10 of those covers at least were pretty good?

And seriously...they list Gnarls Barkley's cover of "Gone Daddy Gone" on there. (And followed by Disturbed's cover of "Land of Confusion", which was also pretty awesome.)

Nah, it's not. Some of it I agreed with, but a lot of it seemed like typical interwebs bravado. Say fuck a lot, say this shit sucks, be aggressive and people will tend to agree.

I don't like Guns and Roses cover of the Dead Boys "Aint It Fun" at all. It doesn't ruin the song for me because nothing could possibly ruin the Dead Boys. The cover is just not for me.

Speaking of Dead Boys covers, Pearl Jam should never have done "Sonic Reducer".

That Britney Spears cover of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" was really fucking bad. (I put that "fucking" in there for you Cloudy)

Pretty much everything on A Perfect Circle's cover album, but in particular "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" and "Imagine."

I have to disagree. Imagine by A Perfect Circle is a million times better than the original. That is my opinion though.
