Radio Stations

Do you still listen to radio? Only at work? Do you prefer podcasts? Do you just listen for certain shows?

I've noticed a massive downtrend in the radio I listen to in the last two years (perhaps not so coincidentally my belief that not as much awesome music is made these days has risen) and I've started listening to the Q Digital station to try and get back into music. My main problem lies in the fact radio stations are afraid to take a chance, they're ALWAYS playing the well known songs in the primetime, there's no dedication to new music in the 8-6 market (which I consider the 'working times' that most people probably listen to radio).

Gold at work. It's the only radio station I can put up with, mainly because Maaaaak Sweeneh is a fucking legend. A dirty Northern legend, but a legend nonetheless.

If Internet radio stations count, then WOWRadio (World of Warcraft station) in the evenings when I get home.

Pretty much I only listen to the radio on my way to and from school, which is only like 5 minutes so I don't listen that often.

Though, 93.1 The Lake, one of our local classic rock stations, always plays great music though so it's not too bad. I hate when stations are all on commercial though, it happens too often.

Hockey Central at Noon on Fan 590. Millard and Berg > Millard and Kypreos.

I feel the need to listen Z103, which is a general poppy music station in Toronto, when I am driving just so I don't fall out of the loop. I mean, not all mainstream music is bad. And even if it is bad, some of the bad stuff is kinda catchy.

I used to be an "Edgehead" back in the day, listening to 102.1 the Edge all the time. It's actually a pretty decent rock station. No Nickelback, no crappy numetal, a lack of crappy generic rock. There is crap, but when comparing to people I hear talking about stations playing shitty rock music, Edge is pretty good. I have a weird thing for the Dean Blundell Show in the morning too. It`s refreshing to hear a crude morning show that not only makes fun of themselves more than anybody else, but can also break character and show a human, sometimes sensitive, sometimes intelligent, side where they aren`t jackasses who rip on people and make coitus and fecal jokes. Maybe I just listen to the show too much.

EDIT: I just noticed that I can`t type a normal apostrophe in Firefox. Weird.

I only listen to radio when I know one of my friend's is going to be in studio. Outside of that I carry music with me at almost all times. I bought a set of speakers complete with sub-woofer for the kitchen I work in so I can hook up my laptop/ipod, and between the record player, cd player, and my massive music library the closest I get to a radio at home is in the form of Pandora.com

EDIT: Speak of the devil... My DJ friend, and half of The Rustic Overtones just walked into the coffee shop that I am at. Eerie.

See, I prefer Jack or Q if I'm in Toronto. Maybe Edge. Can't stand hiphop, so never listen to Z.

Radio KoL is pretty good, even if I don't play Kingdom of Loathing anymore. I used to DJ for /b/radio, but there was dramallama and I don't think that exists anymore. Actual radio blows.

I generally listen to Radio 1, a lot. It plays some hella good stuff, with a lot of good chart stuff, as well as the odd gem in there - Vernon Kay playing the full six odd minute version of 'Slam' on a Saturday morning springs to mind. It also has the greatness of Zane Lowe's show, which is excellent for catching up on the new 'L33T' music, and Chris Moyles, who I love.

I never really listened to the radio until the other day, so it's strange that you made this topic now. But yeah, I had a long weekend off from school because of Easter, and my computer can't run WMP and Football Manager at the same time, so I decided to listen to Radio 1 at the same time as playing, and got addicted, now I'm listening all the time, as long as the DJ who's playing doesn't specialise in shit music or anything. I'm a lot more tolerant of chart stuff than I used to be, and I tend to like most of it now, so I'm glad to listen to anything really, and like SSTB said they play some less mainstream stuff occassionally which is always a bonus.

If I'm ever awake early enough, I'll catch Merrick And Rosso on Nova 96.9, but I stopped listening as much when they changed from playing different music to the same old generic stuff everyone else plays.

Tuesdays at 10pm, I listen to "Full Metal Racket" on Triple J. As you can probably tell, it's nothing but metal. I've found some real gems because of it.

As for just having it on for background noise, Vega 95.3 is constantly on, because it plays "older" stuff (70s, 80s, 90s) and actually picks out good music from today's choices...

Sara Cox got knocked up, so you're safe for a few months.

Only when I use it as my alarm to wake up and get ready in the morning.

There's a great classic rock station here, but they have horrible talk radio in the morning so it's set to the college/public radio station. They have a rule of playing no music that has been on the top 20 (or something like that) charts, so it's never the same radio junk you always hear. And the random DJs all have different preferences there's a large range. This is both good and bad. There's this one guy who plays only country/folk/bluegrass stuff that I never like, but there's this girl who plays some awesome techno stuff.

Plus, there's really no commercials.

If you guys are ever bored at work and have a computer but nothing to do or listen to, I would suggest http://www.nhbradio.com. They have live shows almost every day, but during shitty timeslots. So they allow you to download their radio shows as MP3's, and I used to be a dedicated listener, and would call in or instant message the people at the show plenty.

Kerrang! 105.2, but only for 20 minutes a day, in four five minute blocks, and I noticed a strange pattern

8.55-9.00*

12.00-12.05*

12.55-13.00

17.00-17.05*

The ones marked with an * are always the same song, usually 'House of Cards' by Madina Lake, which is just... brilliant <_<

I listen to Radio 1 a fair bit. I got up early on Monday to listen to Zane Lowe fill in for Chris Moyles, and it was epic. Lowe is far and away my favourite when it comes to Radio DJs. The mix of stuff he plays is great, and I loved how he didn't take Moyles' impression of him seriously.

Scott Mills is my favourite daytime, and I like Jo and Edith when I can catch them. Moyles just loves his voice too much, and yes he can be entertaining but he spends too much time dragging stuff out that doesn't need to be dragged out for as long as he does. I don't hate him, but I don't think he's the saviour or anything like others (and himself) seem to have thought.

Zane Lowe all the way :) In new music we trust, I just love the concept - and half the time wish I was involved somehow :)

Still nothing bears just listening to what you want on iTunes or CD. Ultimate freedom and control there.
