The thing with Sabbath, if you must include them, you have to cite Blue Cheer AND Cream in this list. Sabbath does not come into existence without the two of them.

Also, R.E.M. are probably best exemplified as the United States' answer to The Smiths. They were as American as The Smiths were English.

You're going to have to explain the REM/Sonic Youth connection. I'm going to ignore the grunge thing because that's too troublesome to get into (though I'm very very very dubious of that. Without REM there would be no Green River?). But anyway.

I think Sabbath did something a bit different, they weren't as much of a straight laced rock act like Blue Cheer and Cream. They explored realms in music (in regard to lyrics, sound, and content) that hadn't really been touched on in rock and roll. Their ominous sound only helped to accentuate their ghoulish lyrics. Blue Cheer and Cream were heavy for their time, but Black Sabbath was heavier, scarier, and much more interesting.

And wow, Sex Pistols in the top five? I can dig that, I don't know if I'd personally rank them ahead of other bands instrumental in the influence of punk, but they certainly deserve their share of the credit.

Yup. Like I implied in the subtitle, the winner of this one was never in doubt at all. Congrats, Fabs, though you may continually be bested by the likes of Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers or whatever, this is one music poll wherein you absolutely slaughtered everyone else.

See you next time, EWB list fans, when we do Top 50 Soft Drinks! Coke vs. Pepsi: Sodageddon! BE THERE.
