NME Greatest Albums of the Decade

METALMAN

OoS is my favourite album of all time - and obviously the best Muse album - but I can see why it wouldn't make the NME top 100. When it came out, there was no quirky apocalyptic gimmick, and everyone was quick to dismiss them as a Radiohead rip-off, even though the closest they come to being that is with 'Screenager'. However, I think the real problem with the indie crowd is that it's an uncompromising Kerrang album. It slotted perfectly into the loud, commercially successful, ever so slightly Americanized rock British bands like Feeder and Ash and A were producing at the time. It's a credit to Muse that they became more adventurous if crowd-pleasing (Starlight, anyone?) or else they'd be deep into obscurity like the other bands I've mentioned have been since the likes of The Libertines broke into the mainstream.

Origin of Symmetry is pretty much one big track over another but the flow and feel of it as an album isn't as good as Absolution. As far as Muse albums go my top three are definitily Absolution then Showbiz then Origin of Symmetry.

That is pretty much where I sit with it all. Nowhere near as big a fan of OoS as some people.

Only 25 of the hundred, surprising since I've read the NME since 2001. Glad Super Furry Animals got in, delighted to see Field Music, and frankly appalled that Hard Fi made the list over obvious omissions like The Futureheads or anything by the Cribs.

To knock the Muse thing on the head, I actually prefer Black Holes and Showbiz over Absolution and Origin of Symmetry, so clearly theres some opinion involved.

yes cause they only had albums by Outkast and all that. Well known for their electric guitars are Outkast.

Same goes for Dizzee Rascal, MIA, the Streets. Some proper guitar heroes there!

then you have the likes of Bon Iver and Laura Marling, well known for their electric guitar skills.

Maybe read the list before you make a comment like that?

Maybe because they are a magazine that specialises in a certain genre (or at least genres) of music?

I wouldn't expect an album by Anal Cunt to end up on the list, but it wouldn't make me boo and hiss at the NME, because that isn't the type of music they cover.

To be fair to the NME, they cover a wider range of music than other British music magazines and give a fairer assessment. They were only really bias when indie was back in fashion between 2004 and 2007 or so, and gave absolute tossers like Razorlight and The Kaiser Chiefs unjustified coverage.

It was an overgeneralisation perhaps, its just that they ignore so many genres that anything they produce is always vastly skewed in the one direction.

Just like Metal Hammer is towards metal and MixMag is to dance and clubbing, so NME is towards what a lot of people would consider "indie". At least it isn't like Q, I really dislike Q.

I have the same issue with any of them producing a list and then calling it "the best" though. "The best indie", "NME's favourites" fair enough.

Indeedy. Not to mention the fact the list wasn't exclusively put together by the NME, theres a big list of artists, journo's etc involved in the voting.

Totally off topic, but is the Grey Album available anywhere these days? I'm sure I had it on an old PC but never put it on CD.
