Sunderland footballer Titus Bramble has been arrested after a woman was raped in a Newcastle hotel.

The Premier League defender and a second man were arrested at the Vermont Hotel early on Wednesday and are being questioned by detectives.

The 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape after a call was made to the police by a woman in her 20s.

Sunderland Football Club has so far not commented. Bramble joined the club from Wigan in the summer.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said two men, aged 29 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of rape.

Bramble has also played for Newcastle United and Ipswich.

Poor Titus can't get anything right.

Premier League player Titus Bramble "strenuously denies any wrongdoing" after being arrested on suspicion of rape, Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has said.

The defender was questioned at a Newcastle police station after he and his brother Tesfaye were held at a city centre hotel.

Quinn said in a club statement: "This has been a very difficult day for everyone at the football club, no one more so than Titus, who categorically refutes the allegations that have been made against him.

"He strenuously denies any wrongdoing and will be doing everything within his power to clear his name.

"I as chairman, and the club as a whole, totally support Titus in his efforts and we all hope for a swift conclusion to this matter."

Bramble, 29, who used to play for Ipswich Town, Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic, was arrested with Tesfaye, 30, also a footballer.

They were detained after the rape of a young woman was reported to police in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It is believed the alleged rape happened at the four-star Vermont Hotel, which has an entrance close to bars and nightclubs on Newcastle's quayside.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police received a report of a rape of a woman at a city centre hotel in Newcastle in the early hours.

"Two men, aged 29 and 30, have been arrested on suspicion of rape."

Bramble, a former England under-21 player, was signed by Sunderland manager Steve Bruce from Wigan for a fee thought to be around £1m in the summer.

A spokesman for the Premier League player's solicitor, Mark Haslam, refused to comment, as did hotel staff.

Two Brambles? Lordy lordy...

Court date set for December 2.

There were rumours and possible arrests (can't remember now) of one involving him, Carl Cort and a few others in the Bobby Robson era at SJP. It was one of the reasons Souness was brought in to try to get control of the dressing room.

No action is to be taken against Sunderland footballer Titus Bramble, who was arrested over the alleged rape of a woman at a Newcastle hotel.

The Premier League defender and his brother, Tesfaye, were arrested at the Vermont Hotel on 22 September after a 19-year-old woman complained to police.

Northumbria Police said no further action was to be taken against 29-year-old Bramble.

His 30-year-old brother remains on police bail pending further inquiries.

At the time of his arrest Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn and team manager Steve Bruce said they were "fully supportive" of the player.

Bramble, a former England Under-21 international, joined the club from Wigan in the summer.

His older brother has played international football for Montserrat and appeared in the Football League for Southend United and Stockport County.

He most recently played non-league football for Felixstowe and Walton United.
