And when I'm older, you aint gotta work no more

And Imma get you that mansion that we couldn't afford

See you're, unbreakable, unmistakable

Highly capable, lady that's makin loot

A livin legend too, just look at what heaven do

Send us an angel, and I thank you.

--Kanye West "Hey Mama"

I think any mama's boy can appreciate that song.

Or alternatively...

I say fuck the police, thats how I treat em

We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom

We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em

Things we buy to cover up what's inside

Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth

That's why shortys hollering "where da ballas at?"

Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack

And a white man get paid off of all of that

--Kanye West "All Falls Down"

Whatever happened to childhood?We’re all scared of the kids in our neighboorhood;

They’re not small, charming and harmless,

They’re a violent bunch of bastard little shits.

And anyone who looks younger than me

Makes me check for my wallet, my phone and my keys,

And I’m tired of being tired out

Always being on the lookout for thieving gits.

We’re all wondering how we ended up so scared;

We spent ten long years teaching our kids not to care

And that “there’s no such thing as society” anyway,

And all the rich folks act surprised

When all sense of community dies,

But you just closed your eyes to the other sidev Of all the things that she did.

Thatcher fucked the kids.

And it seems a little bit rich to me,

The way the rich only ever talk of charity

In times like the seventies, the broken down economy

Meant even the upper tier was needing some help.

But as soon as things look brighter,

Yeah the grin gets wider and the grip gets tighter,

And for every teenage tracksuit mugger

There’s a guy in a suit who wouldn’t lift a finger for anybody else.

You’ve got a generation raised on the welfare state,

Enjoyed all its benefits and did just great,

But as soon as they were settled as the richest of the rich,

They kicked away the ladder, told the rest of us that life’s a bitch.

And it’s no surprise that all the fuck-ups

Didn’t show up until the kids had grown up.

But when no one ever smiles or ever helps a stranger,

Is it any fucking wonder our society’s in danger of collapse?

So all the kids are bastards,

But don’t blame them, yeah, they learn by example.

Blame the folks who sold the future for the highest bid:

That’s right, Thatcher fucked the kids.

Dolls of voodoo all stuck with pins,

One for each of us and our sins,

So you lay us in a line

Push your pins, they make us humble.

Only you can tell in time

If we'll fall or merely stumble

But tell me

Can you heal what father's done?

Or fix this hole in a mother's son?

Can you heal the broken worlds within?

Can you strip away so we may start again?

Tell me, can you heal what father's done?

Or cut this rope and let us run?

Just when all seems fine and I'm pain free

You jab another pin

Jab another pin in me

Mirror, mirror upon thy wall

Break the spell or become the doll

See you sharpening the pins

So the holes will remind us

We're just the toys in the hands of another

And in time the needles turn from shine to rust

Jab it

Blood for face

Sweat for dirt

Three x's for the stone

To break this curse

A ritual due

I believe I'm not alone

Shell of shotgun

Pint of gin

Numb us up to shield the pins

Renew our faith which way we can

To fall in love with life again

To fall in love with life again

To fall in love with life again

To fall in love

To fall in love

To fall in love with life again

So tell me

Can you heal what father's done?

Or fix this hole in mother's son?

Can you heal the broken worlds within?

Can you strip away so we may start again?

Yeah, tell me, can you heal what father's done?

Or cut this rope and let us run?

Just when all seems fine and I'm pain free

Jab another pin

Jab another pin in me

Oh yeah

No more pins in me, yeah

No more, no more pins in me

No more, no more pins in me

No more, no more, no more

No, no, no

Absence makes the heart grow fonder/Fondness makes the absence longer
'We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed' - Los Campesinos

Complete the thought, dammit!

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder/Fondness makes the absence longer/length loses my interests, I'm a realist, I'm insatiable."

That whole EEP is lovely. Hopefully I'll catch Los Camp for the third or fourth time when they come to the States again next month.

Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?

The River by Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band

That's probably my favourite Bruce lyric, awesome.

Here's a few of mine;

But could you try, when I die

To paint my shadow on the wall

And when these organs are defeated

Give the doctor free-for-all

Oh cut me out, cut me up

Little bits of me live on

In drops of paint upon a wall, in lines of song

A line in a song

Filthy streets cut dirty scars

Through gutless architecture

And the dead hour shift is fluoro, lit so sickeningly bright

Circles of the air, condensed are softening the coaster

Dust is just dead skin and hair

Leave your chair, take back your life

You see the buildings have begun to catch the light

Could you try, when I die

To paint my shadow on the wall

And when these organs are defeated

Give the doctors free-for-all

Oh cut me out, cut me up

Little bits of me live on

I can feel someone else's breath filling my lungs

The Guild League - "Dead Hour"

Fairly lengthy, but I feel just the chorus on its own doesn't quite do it justice. Absolutely perfect lyrics, I think.

I used to wake and run with the moon

I lived like a rake and a young man

I covered my lovers with flowers and wounds

my laughter the devil would frighten

The sun she would come and beat me back down

but every cruel day had its nightfall

I'd welcome the stars with wine and guitars

full of fire and forgetful

Townes Van Zandt - "Rake"

Thanks for the trouble, you took from her eyes

I thought it was there for good, so I never tried

Oh I just remembered one of my favourite few lines from a song:

Now should you expect to see something that you hadn't seen

In somebody you've known since you were sixteen.

If love is a bolt from the blue

then what is a bolt but a glorified screw,

that doesn't hold nothing together.

It's from Augie March's "One Crowded Hour", which I always thought was a shameless Bob Dylan rip-off. Then I heard an interview with the lead singer who stated that he'd just gotten into Dylan and had listened to all of the albums you are encouraged to listen to as a new listener one after the other and decided to knock out a song like it for a laugh and wrote the whole thing in an hour or two and the band decided they loved it.

One I just remembered that I absolutely love;

I promise to learn to love the way I've learned to fear

To unknot all the inhibitions tangled in my hair

I was raised up believing, I was somehow unique

Like a snowflake unique among snowflakes, distinct in each way you can see

And now after some thinking, I say I'd much rather be

A functioning cog in some great machinery, serving something beyond me

But I don't, I don't know, what that will be

I'll get back to you someday, soon you will see

I will pack all my pretty dresses

I will box up my high-heeled shoes

A sparkling ring for every finger

I'll put away and hide from view

Coats of boucle, jacquard and cashmere

Cartouche and tweed, all silver-shot

And everything that could remind you

Of how easy I was not

I'll tuck away my gilded buttons

I'll bind my silks in shapeless bales

Wrap it all up in reams o' tissue

And then I'll kiss you sweet farewell

You saw me rise to our occasion

And so deny the evidence

'Caused me to burn and twist and grimace against you

Like something caught on a barbed wire fence

Now you can see me fall back here redoubled

Full bewildered and amazed

I have gotten into some terrible trouble

Beneath your blank and rinsing gaze

It does not suffice for you to say I am a sweet girl

Or to say you hate to see me sad because of you

It does not suffice to merely lie beside each other

As those who love each other do

I picture you rising up in the morning

Stretching out on your boundless bed

Beating a clear path to the shower

Scouring yourself red

The tap of hangers swaying in the closet

Unburdened hooks and empty drawers

And everywhere I tried to love you

Is yours again and only yours

"Does not Suffice" by Joanna Newsom. Just fucking incredible really.

I have recently decided that 'Cemetery' is my favorite Say Anything song.

There's a cemetery deep below the sea

They're the spaces reserved for fools like me

Tried to kill myself at least a dozen times

But nothing seemed to turn out right

Now I'd rather wait a half a century

Soiling the bed all belligerent and wrinkly

Even when I go blind and lose my mind

Nothing seems to turn out right

Something's got to turn out right

If you want then when we die

We'll ascend to some place way up high

At the gate they'll show you through

If they ask me, I'm with you

You're in my body

You're in my body

You're in my body

That's where I think about you

In my body

You're in my body

You're in my body

That's where I think about you

There's no one who imagines like you

So convinced there's somewhere that we go to

Not a first class trip to the abyss

Tell me too you still feel this

Tell me too you still feel this

As I drown in lakes of fire,

I will call your name as I expire

It's the last thing that I'll do

I will tell them I'm with you

You're in my body

You're in my body

You're in my body

That's where I think about you

In my body

You're in my body

You're in my body

That's where I think about you

Falling asleep, asleep at the wheel

As I approach that cliff

I'm starting to feel

If you can wake me up, with only a touch

If I can die with you, life would be enough

And I'll face the one you made

My disgusting heart from a lump of clay

Should he ask what got me through?

If he asks me, it was you

You're in my body

You're in my body

You're in my body

That's where I think about you

In my body

You're in my body

You're in my body

That's where I think about you

I'll be your mirror

Reflect what you are, in case you dont know

I'll be the wind, the rain and the sunset

The light on your door to show that youre home

When you think the night has seen your mind

That inside youre twisted and unkind

Let me stand to show that you are blind

Please put down your hands

cause I see you

I find it hard to believe you dont know

The beauty that you are

But if you dont let me be your eyes

A hand in your darkness, so you wont be afraid

When you think the night has seen your mind

That inside youre twisted and unkind

Let me stand to show that you are blind

Please put down your hands

cause I see you

A Silent Army In The Trees - Matthew Good

This is another song that took me the first time that I listened to it on demo, and loved it even more when it was released in full on his 'Vancouver' album. A gripping song about soldiers overseas who are inexperienced in any real form of operations and instead being shoved into the thick of battle.

What will you find, where will you be?

When you got to trade for company

Those plastic guns for infantry

For a silent army in the trees

Well this ain't the woods behind the house

There ain't nobody screaming out

For you to come inside and eat

You're just holding your friends and watching them bleed

Wore camouflage on Halloween

A plastic bag, an M16

Door to door and house to house

There ain't nobody handing it out

Yeah nothing's ever what it seems

When you're kicking in teeth

And wishing it dreams

Just plastic guns and infantry

For a silent army in the trees

Baby don't you let me down

A world away and still somehow

Can't shake the feeling that you're out

With another man's arms wrapped tight around you

At night it's cold

We sit and freeze

Running red lights in our Humvees

Never thought I'd live to see see the day, I'd be

Afraid of little kids playing in the streets

Well this ain't the woods behind the house

There ain't nobody screaming out

For you to come inside and eat

You're just holding your friends and watching them bleed

I'm on fire

I'm all ice on the outside

That old man in the sky

Well he's all ice on the outside

A muted wail out in the streets

You watch the stage but burn the seats

Two metal legs to get along

We ain't got much without one to stand on

Sometimes at night I hear it roll

A hundred cars long pulling out slow

Like the engineers inside my head

Cold and dark like your side of the bed

Yeah nothings ever what it seems

And even if it is ends justifies means

With plastic guns and infantry

For a silent army in the trees

Hello? Do ya know your one son left?

I am licensed to kill, and he has been marked for death

Up on the hill in the back of the 'ville with two in the dome

I left him stiffer than a tombstone

How about some hardcore?

Figured I'd bump this topic as I was going to create a new one.

Life's a long and winding ride
Better have the right one by your side
And happiness don't drag its feet
Time moves faster than you think

Now there’s no slowin’ down
There’s only settin’ the pace
No more dreams to be stolen
Just the right ones to chase
You’ve been through the worst
Now you know who to trust
Leave them something behind
Before the ashes and dust

Those notes you wrote me
I've kept them all
I've given a lot of thought of how to write you back this fall
With every single letter in every single word
There will be a hidden message about a boy that
Loves a girl

And you’d probably punch my arm right now
If you saw this tear rollin’ down on my face
Hey, man I’m tryin’ to be tough
And momma asked me this morning
If I’d been by your grave
But that flag and stone ain’t where I feel you anyway

After my dreaming
I woke with this fear
What am I leaving
When I'm done here?

Your favorite records make me feel better
Cause you sing along
With every song
I know you didn’t mean to give them to me

Miranda Lambert - Over You
