American Sports Teams

I follow teams based on my liking for their home city, plus a few other factors like their logo and stuff.

NFL - New Orleans Saints. I love New Orleans. For the culture and its musical and social history. Plus I really like Old Orleans in France. First year I decided New Orleans was my team - knowing nothing about how good their actual team was, I chose them for their strip, the city, and the - they won the Superbowl. Which was pretty cool.

I'm a lot more loosely affiliated to teams in the other sports So I am going to choose teams for myself now.

In the NHL, I liked the Atlanta Thrashers, cause I like Atlanta. But now they are dead so I am unsure. Most NHL teams have really shit nicknames, which rules them out. St. Louis Blues is an amazing name, but I know little of the city. It seems boring. Just found out Mighty Ducks changed their name and logo, bloody idiots, so they are ruled out also. I like Montreal's strip. I like Montreal. I will pick Montreal.

NBA - I would never support Boston because they have Celtic in their name (yuck!). I like New Orleans. I like the Hornets' funny badge. I will pick New Orleans Hornets.

MLB - I hate all these teams called Sox. Guy from Boston who was in my course, nice guy, offered to send me some Red Sox gear. I do not like it. Because they are called Sox. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is ridiculously long winded. I hope that team dies. Cleveland Indians have a hilarious logo but they are unfortunately from Cleveland. Philadelphia Phillies is least imaginative name ever. What even is a Padre? I will choose Houston Astros, because I like astronauts.

Unless you're a masochist you don't want to end up supporting any of the following teams - Chicago Cubs, any team from Cleveland, LA Clippers, New York Islanders or Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates. I'm sure there are others, but those teams are responsible for high blood pressure, irritability and premature death. True story.

BTW, the Padres (Spanish for Fathers) are named after monks since San Diego was founded by friars. Their old logo variants with a friar swinging for the fences was awesome.

Most of the NFL will be on Sky, I think ESPN has the pregame shows though. Don't pick too much of an underdog team like the Browns or Lions, as you'll never get to see them on TV. You want either recently successful, big American cities or traditional English favourites (49ers, Giants, Cowboys, Dolphins, Bears, Buccaneers). Tampa Bay's probably a decent bet to be fair, good young team, decent UK support.

Again, with hockey, ESPN only seem to show certain teams (I think Colorado were on like 5 times all season), the Original Six and the Canadien teams feature pretty heavily.

Benji, do what I did. HOLD A LOTTERY. Throw all 30 or 32 teams in a hat, depending on which league you're looking at, and slowly start eliminating teams from the hat. Get some other people involved, and create some suspense.

I did that this year for the NBA, and it came down to the Nuggets and Knicks. Would I hate Carmelo, or would I love him?

Well, it turns out that he is one of the top players in the league, and we're lucky to have him. ;)

I actually had a blast doing this, and may do it again when NFL looks to get started.

Also if your getting ESPN to watch sports, you'll naturall gravitate to certain teams, becaus e certain teams will be on more than others.

This might be the best way to choose teams. Which teams are on British ESPN the most, which are not total glory grabber teams, and also don't have a reputation for being a bunch of douchebags. I also like Carparama's idea of just randoming the shit out of it.
