Hospital says Fabrice Muamba managed to sit out of bed over the weekend and has started eating. He remains in intensive care, but is making progress. Bolton manager Owen Coyle says that Fabrice Muamba was able to watch Match of the Day on Sunday morning.

"A bit of humour that comes out of that is the fact that I'm led to believe he fell asleep when it was 2-0!"

Loads of Muamba stuff today:

A joint statement has been released by Barts and The London NHS Trust and Bolton Wanderers FC about Fabrice Muamba's condition as the 23-year-old recovers after suffering a cardiac arrest during his side's game against Tottenham on 17 March. It reads:

"Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at The London Chest Hospital where his condition is serious but stable.

"He continues to make encouraging progress in his recovery. Over the weekend, he has been able to sit out of bed for a short time, watch television and has begun to eat. However, he will need to continue to be closely monitored by the medical team at The London Chest for some time.

"His family requests that he receive no more visitors for the moment, outside of immediate family and members of Bolton Wanderers Football Club."

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba has posted a picture of himself on Twitter from his hospital bed.

It was Muamba's first tweet since 17 March when he suffered a cardiac arrest in the FA Cup tie against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

The 23-year-old collapsed on the pitch after 41 minutes of play and was not breathing for 78 minutes.

Medical staff performed emergency CPR on him after he fell to the ground with no other players around him.

Doctors and paramedics gave the former England Under-21 international mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and tried to revive him with a defibrillator.

He was then rushed to the intensive care unit of the heart attack centre at the London Chest Hospital, where he has remained since the incident.

The picture was retweeted by his fiancée Shauna, who tweeted: "Fab wanted me to post this pic for you all and to also say thank you for such overwhelming support."

Fabrice Muamba is continuing to make "strong and steady improvements" in his recovery from a cardiac arrest as he celebrates his 24th birthday.

A statement from the club and hospital trust confirmed his progress and added he "remains in the intensive care unit of the London Chest Hospital".

Bolton manager Owen Coyle said: "He has done some short periods of walking down the corridor he is in.

"He is taking steps, talking and has that big smile which we love to see."

Bolton midfielder Muamba was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after collapsing in Wanderers' FA Cup tie at Tottenham last month.

Coyle added: "My chairman Phil Gartside was there with our club doctor Jonathan Tobin on Wednesday, and our club chaplain Phil Mason will be there on Thursday to continue the support from the football club.

"A couple of players have been sending him messages and we are keeping in touch. It has been great to see that smile and he continues to get better.

"We have to stress that he still has a long way to go, but the improvement has been remarkable and long may that continue."
