It's not even that her humor's safe, it's that she seems totally bored and unhappy with the whole thing. I was expecting her to be kind of boring but enthusiastic and instead it's like they wrote jokes for half of the host segments and for the other half were like "oh by the way Ellen you're improving here" ten seconds before they cut to her on the other half.
