South Park

i liked the britney episode, i don´t see where this brings up the question if they should hang it up.... there have ben by far worse episodes... like the one about operas pussy lips or about the biggest dumb of the world.

The difference is, those episodes had the trademark South Park humor. They were funny. Oprah's cunt and the Biggest Douche in the Universe (which I'm assuming is what you meant) were a little off the wall, especially the former... but they were still funny and they worked as South Park episodes.

The Britney Spears episode, while hardly a disaster like some people think, just didn't feel like South Park. Sure, I laughed, but it didn't feel like South Park.

You don't watch porn for good acting.

nah, i meant the one with bono being the biggest crap on the planet earth (last season i belive)

The biggest Doush was just fine.

What is "just south park" or you? They developed a great deal of a lot, so is old south park no south park anymore? Is south park to day no south park anymore? If southpark today is south park 2.0 why should development stop?!

Anyway, this episode was nothing "un" south park to me... they adressed some Public issue like they often did in the past seasons and found a radical way to buston it (basicly the same style that the Aids episode last week was)

The AIDS episode was littered with South Park humor though. I think what most of us are trying to point out is that the Britney Spears episode just didn't feel like it belonged.

You know... one of these things is not like the other, and such.

It's like watching a sitcom that's usually dick and fart jokes, and one week there's a random episode where someone gets cancer and they throw in a few jokes here or there, but it's just hard to laugh at. Maybe the jokes weren't as funny as they usually are... or maybe they've alienated their audience by trying to put a message across without giving them their weekly dose of whatever it is they watch the show for.

I love the social commentary in South Park... but the Britney Spears episode just didn't feel like an episode of South Park. The AIDS episode was classic South Park. It had an issue, but the jokes were funny and fit in to what the show is.

What I (and I believe Gabe to some degree) am trying to say is not that South Park is one particular thing, but the one thing that makes it South Park is it's ability to be funny no matter what, whether it's the dick and fart jokes and constant swearing, or a well written parody or commentary on whatever they choose, it's evolved from one thing to another, and that's good, because you can't keep a show going twelve seasons and not change it. But at the end of the day South Park is a comedy, and when you don't laugh at a comedy then it's not fulfilling its purpose, the Britney episode barely even tried to be funny, it was half hearted "oh the top half of her head is off" crap. I don't mind a message, but if the message comes at the price of the funnies, then it's not done what it's meant to do. Grow, but don't forget what got you where you are.

I agree with most everyone. I found the AIDS episode to be average, (funny, but nothing over the top), yet the Brittany Spears episode to be a total bomb. That doesn't mean I think Trey and Matt should quit the show. I just think (and this is just me) this show bombed. I suppose they figured Brittany walking around with her head missing, and unable to do anything but make gargling sounds would be funnier then it actually came out. Maybe some people found that to be funny. I didn't.

Hmmmmm, might it be that you guys have never seen the old school "cult based" horror stuff like omen or rosemarys baby? Maybee that tie in was what did it for me here.... ?

That part made me chuckle, because I'm a horror geek and I love those movies. There was a recent one with Jeremy Sisto in it that was really good. Population 347 or something like that.

If people are worried about the quality of these episodes, remember, they are the first South Parks after the writer's strike. Matt and Trey usually take their writers out on a retreat to get ideas before the new season, but I doubt this was the case this season, they probably just jumped right into it.

Really? I didn't know that. That's pretty awesome.

Heh, I just saw Heavy Metal being sold as a cult classic today when I was out buying my router. Either way, I love it when they use a different art style for portions of an episode (in any cartoon really) so this could be good. As far as the last two episodes went, I never really saw a big problem with them... AIDs one was better for sure, as the Britney episode just... disturbed me. Not a lot for gore.

I didn't catch a Family Guy reference...

But yeah, awesome episode last night. The Heavy Metal stuff was hilarious because that's pretty much all that movie is - one giant excuse to show animated boobies long before the Japanese made it cool. The Elliot Spitzer gag at the end was really funny, specifically the look on Sheila's face.
