EWB's Top 50 TV Shows of 2015: The Results

iZombie's basically the successful result of a gene splicing experiment between Veronica Mars and Buffy, so needless to say I really like it. Episodes get a little up-and-down but it's a refreshingly original take on the whole zombie thing.

I'm not even sure how far behind I am on Archer. It's really reliably funny but for some reason Archer Vice was a roadblock for me and I've prioritized other things.

Another thing I haven't finished this year; Orange is the New Black season 3. There's a ton of stuff I still love about it but Piper is so irritating this season, and that's after I was basically a Piper Apologist for the first two.

I really want to watch Narcos. I seriously think I'm just awful at committing to Netflix shows for some reason, maybe because they're not taking up finite DVR space.

South Park is Not For Me anymore. Sometimes I check back in for a specific episode but I haven't even done that in like two to three years.

This year I watched the most Supernatural I've ever watched, by which I mean I watched half of one episode and half of another because it was on at my dad's. He has more time/drive to bingewatch than I do, I guess.

I was really big on the final season of Community, which I thought was the best since three (but definitely not as good as 3 or the seasons that preceded it). The longer run-time meant that there were some pacing issues but it also felt tonally unique, which was much-needed after season 5 felt like too much of a retread. Series finale in particular was tremendous.

Watched the first episode of Mr. Robot last night. Overall pretty good but there's a little bit of fatigue that comes with the concept pretty much being that the camera is a construct of an anti-establishment hacker's imagination. Like, I get it. I get the imagery. Corporations bad. Can't wait to watch more, though.

Veep was great, and I'm glad it's finally jumped out of the the 40-45 range this year.

Silicon Valley was also great! That entire Game of Thrones/Silicon Valley/Veep/Last Week Tonight block is pretty ridiculous, all things considered. Less Russ next season though, please. Like, "barely any" will suffice.

Rick And Morty, yay! Agent Carter, yay! Other shows, woo! I've still never watched a full Dr. Who episode, I haven't even seen season 1 of Fargo, and I quit watching TWD like three seasons ago.

Fargo was awesome this year, and Rick and Morty was awesome forever.

Fell off the wagon with Walking Dead this season. Bored to death with it.

I haven't bothered with Doctor Who for a good while. I haven't heard of a reason to.

I feel like I mostly fell off with TWD where I did with the books. I got just past Woodbury and would check out issues here and there (usually because of some shocking moment) then forget about it again. I did the same with the series - it just hasn't really held my attention. I'm all for misery porn shows (I mean come on, I loved Sons of Anarchy) but it felt, to me, like The Walking Dead's biggest sin was that it managed to be boring misery porn.

I saw about a minute of the Doctor Who Christmas Special on Monday because we were showing it as a special event at the theater. Seems fine. But my insane quest to watch Doctor Who in chronological order (no skipping to Eccleston!) is up to the Third Doctor right now, so I'm super excited to watch the Twelfth Doctor in like 15 years.

I think Fargo would have been pushing for a top 10 spot if it had come out earlier in the year. Saw a bunch of "I haven't had time to watch it"s in the ballots. Which is a shame, because IMO it was the best show this year. Kirsten Dunst for all the awards, Peggy Blumquist for life coach of the year.

still need to get on watching Rick and Morty.

Loved Agent Carter, which is I think the superior of the two Marvel shows on ABC. Can't wait for season 2 to kick off in a couple weeks.

The Walking Dead. Man. I think it's just hit that point in its run where its approach/tone is pretty exhausting and tired. Of course, what they're going to do next year will probably shake that status quo up, but I hated Negan in the comics so SHRUG. The Morgan backstory episode was phenomenal, though, and it's a shame that it was placed immediately after that Glenn cliffhanger. (FUN FACT: Fear the Walking Dead did not get a single point. From anyone. Even though it wasn't very good I was still surprised.)

Just now, Bobfoc said:

I've read loads of good things about Fargo. Is it on Netflix or any other streaming service?

Season 1 appears to be on Hulu. Season 2, unfortunately, is seemingly an "ask your cable provider" deal.

Huh, I went back to look at what I actually voted for and just discovered I never amended my ballot to fill it out. Only other shows I can now think of that I've watched the past year were Big Bang (which doesn't honestly deserve to be voted for but after eight seasons I feel like I have to stick with it to the end now), Castle, and It's Always Sunny, which I really regret not voting for after rewatching a few episodes earlier. The last season had some fantastic stuff. Seven left of the eleven I did vote for, and I reckon I've got half the top ten in that group.

Really enlightening looking at this list how many things I need to watch though.

Bittersweet to not see Mad Men in the top 10 in its final year. It fell off from its lofty heights for a little while but the close of season 6 and just about all of season 7 have been brilliant. I think that appeal it had for the first 4 seasons was lost in a lot of ways, it went from telling a story of a world we don't live in to showing the transition into the world we live in now.

Still my favorite show ever and I'll miss it a ton.
