for the record, I almost went with an image of The Tall Man for It Follows and then decided I didn't want to trauma flashback everyone who has seen it

wait

you're thinking about him now, aren't you.

I'm sorry.

The Tall Man was probably the scariest, wasn't it?

Oh no, wait, I'm pretty sure it was Lady Who Fucks the Life Out of You Through Your Penis.

My movie watching this (last) year was remarkable under. Not seen any of the first entries.

However, I'll use this post to :( Trumbo not quite making this list.

And that's a bunch of my favourites gone already; 45 Years, Amy and Spotlight. This list already reminds me how good this year was for film -- I don't think Brooklyn, Room or Me, Earl & The Dying Girl made me top 10, but they're all really good films with a lot going for them.

Another plug for 45 Years. Such a beautiful and crushing film.

Eurgh, Steve Jobs.

Really? I genuinely thought Steve Jobs was so good. I went in with lowered expectations, but I thought the whole thing was electrifying -- from four phenomenal performances to Boyle's direction.

For the love of god, man, at least see It Follows.

And now, fittingly, more of mostly arty films and weighty subject matter!

And I think that's most of my top films gone. Another good bunch -- seriously, I don't know if it's that I saw more of these films this year (I've currently see all but 3), but there was just so much good stuff released this year, especially the in-between budget films that are neither blockbusters or extremely low-budget.

I really thought Carol was just extraordinary in about every single way. I'd definitely encourage people to check that out as well if they missed it, it's so beautiful and incredibly performed. Todd Haynes is an excellent director, and his filmography in general (especially Far From Heaven) is worth checking out.

I thought The Big Short was super fun, Ex Machina was a strong debut film, The Revenant was overrated and that Straight Outta Compton was good, but ultimately flawed for over-protecting its protagonists.
