<----- Level 60 Gnome mage on the Suramar server, names Fenchurch.

I'm in a pretty hardcore raiding guild. We've made Onyxia, all the Molten Core bosses.. including Ragnaros, Lord Kazzak, and Azregos (sp?) our bitches for many a week now.. currently we're flogging away at Blackwing Lair making some decent progress finally after like 90 small patches from Blizz on the first two encounters. I've just now delved into the world of PvP having ran my first AV game.. very very fun.

World of Warcraft for the win.

I refuse to play this game, I think about 6 of the 12 people in my "clique" have MASSIVELY cut down on going out because of this game. I dont want that to happen to me over a game I would have to pay for monthly

I am loving the 'corrupted blood' epidemic. Simply because it allows me to go up to my friend, who's been toying with the idea of getting back into WoW recently, and tell her "If you start playing WoW again, you'll get Aids."

...And just let that line sit for a few moments, before explaining it. :shifty:

I'm getting a little bored with City of Heroes and thinking of taking a break from it. After watching the WoW episode of Cheat, I'm thinking of giving WoW a try.

However, looking at the official site, there's a couple of things that put me off:

1. You have to be at least lvl 40 to get a mount. That sucks. I used to play Everquest, and in that game, anyone who could afford a mount could buy one. However, there are only two types of mounts in EQ (at least, there were when I played): a horse and a giant lizard. They were extremely expensive, and the faster the mount the more expensive it cost. (The cheapest horse ran around 10k platinum, iirc - Its been a while since I played EQ - that works out to about 100k gold)

2. The Honor system. I've heard a lot of bad things about it in the past from people I know who play both WoW and City of Heroes. I'm not a big fan of PvP, so I likely won't be getting the cool armor or weapons rewards if I do play.

I do have a few questions, though:

1. Can characters change their basic clothing (ie, whatever they start out with), or is it like EQ, where every member of a particular race is wearing the exact same thing when they don't have any gear, and the new clothing items just go over the starting ones that are permanently on the character model and can't be removed?

2. Of the two types of Engineering to specialize in, which is better?

3. How are the server populations late at night East Coast Time? I have to play late at night mostly, because its about the only time I can play without getting interrupted unless there's a storm or something going on.

4. What basic gear\equipment do characters start out with?

5. Where can I find a picture of the Mechanical Squirrel pet that Engineers can make, and do pets actually do anything in battle, or are they just pets that follow you around and don't do anything?

6. Is there a lot of powerlevelling going on in the game, like there is in other MMORPGs? (You can't even go into a certain zone in City of Heroes without listening to chatter about PLing going on and people looking to be PLed)

7. How many characters can you have per server?

8. Cooldown = recharge?

The thing about being level 40 to get a mount is that the places where it is easiest to get cash are level 40+, and mounts do cost a fair chunk of cash, so saving up to buy a mount at earlier levels would stop you from getting skills and equipment that will benefit you more than a faster travel speed.

The honour system pissed me off too when it first started, as I hated PvP, I would always avoid getting into fights with opposing factions and would get pissy if I was killed by another player. Then I started playing Battlegrounds, and I found it a fuck load of fun, now I really enjoy PvP. I'm not saying the same thing will happen to you, but Id say you wont dislike it as much as you think.

As for the questions:

1. The only basic clothing that you can change is a shirt, mainly ones that tailors make, as thats the only other eice of clothing that would get seen through all the armor.

2. I haven't actually ever taken Engineering up before, so Im not sure. But my friend tells me that Goblin engineering is much better, as Gnomish engineering is mainly for comedy. Thats not to say Gnomish engineering is shit, it does have its uses, but for the most part Goblin engineering has a ton of very useful things (High attack gear etc)

3. I don't know about America, what with being English and all, but late night (I assume you mean midnight and beyond) can be pretty inactive, there are usually still quite a few people on, they just aren't doing many instance (dungeon) runs.

4. Really very basic stuff. Mage starts off with wooden stick and some cloth pants and a top. Warrior starts off with a sword some poor pants and a top. Etc etc. But for what you fight at the beginning few levels, you really shouldnt worry about your equipment. From lvl 15+, you should start looking for equipment of a green (good) quality or better. You get most of these from Instance runs or quests. Making equipment for yourself using your proffession is also a great idea.

5. www.thottbot.com - Just search Mechanical Squirrel. Ok, heres the deal with pets. There are two kinds of pets, active and passive. Engineers, Hunters and Warlocks can make/have active pets, these can be controlled by the person and attack monsters, backflip, play the clarinet etc etc. Passive pets are just there for show, and do nothing more than run beside you for eternity, they cant be hurt or damaged either.

6. Theres loads of differant ways to level, obviously some are more efficient than others. Power levelling is a very quick way to level, but people don't tend to search for people to PL them, I haven't ever seen one. Most/All people tend to eithe grind (kill lots of) monsters, do quests or a bit of both. I prefer to do quests, as killing mobs over and over again just kills the point of the game for me.

7. I'm unsure, I think its unlimitied as far as I know. Its at least 4, as I have 4 on one server. Would you need more than 2 though at any one time?

8. Cooldown = Recharge? Indeed.

Man, I miss this game, haven't played it since February. I'm guessing a heap has changed. My question is - has enough changed to make it worth me buying a copy and playing it again? Are Battlegrounds much fun?

Thanks for the answers to my questions, guys.

Incidentally, I had to go to World of War .Net to find an actual pic of the Mechanical Squirrel. Thottbot just had pics of the recipe and the box.

It'll probably be about a month or so before I can give the game a try. Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy the game atm, and WoW apparently doesn't do what NCSoft does with CoH; occasionally send codes to players so they can invite someone to try the game without having to buy it. (The code lets the person download the game and gives them a 14 day free trial)

I'm leaning toward a Night Elf Hunter or Gnome Warlock

Oh, I can admit the Priest is the mother of all PvP engines (or was). Nothing says 'your face got melted' like a chain of good spells from a Shadow specialised Priest.
