The Comic Book Thread (spoilers)

From what I gather the show is more Wolverine as the 'Headmaster' kind of role that Xavier filled, only sans the title, which I'm okay with, besides, if it is a continuation of Evolution then that means Wolverine will be used equally and properly.

EDIT: Amazing Spider-Man #549 preview pages on Dan Slott's blog for those still interested, they aren't his issues, but I would like to state Menace/Quasi-Goblin decapitating thugs with his glider = Awesome.

I would like to remind you all that everytime somebody reads BND Spidey Baby Jesus is molested with knives.

Don't judge BND by OMD, BND has been genuinely interesting so far and whilst I still stand by the fact that these stories didn't need that fucking awful retcon, the first three have still been good.

In regards to the earlier discussion about Ultimate Sinister, I must say I throughorly enjoyed The Tempest, and his re-invention.

Don't get me wrong, I am a die hard 616 Sinister fan. However I felt it was unfair to compare the two as all they really have in common is the name. Two totally different characters in a sense.

Not to sound a hypocrite, but I also like the way they broguht in some similarities. The way he became super powered, a scientist doing stuff to himself (yeah sounds pretty similar). But most of all I loved the Apocalypse thing, it just leaves so many questions. Is he a psycho? Other than being a trigger happy killer, that is. Is Apocalypse real? Is he in Sinisters head or what? Its all going to be interesting when I get to the more recent stories with more developments.

Quick question, what's everybodies favourite collected books? I'm just going to list my top five but do more or less, whatever you feel is right.

1. Watchmen

2. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

3. Marvels

4. Kingdom Come

5. X-Men: Age of Apocalypse (technically cheating since it's four collected, but screw you it's my thread :P )

1. The Long Halloween

2. Runaways Volume One Super Duper hardcover thing

3. Daredevil: Born Again

4. Earth X

5. Watchmen

Also I officially state for the record that i do now and always will dislike Kingdom Come. great art, shallow and shitty story.

1. Watchmen Trade Paperback

2. Preacher Vol. 1-9 Trade Paperbacks

3. Absolute Sandman Vol. 1-4 Hardcovers

4. Walking Dead Vol. 1 Deluxe Hardcover

5. Annihilation Vol. 1-3 Hardcovers

Honorable Mentions:

Various Sin City Trade Paperbacks (while highly influential, a bit uneven at times and very quick, almost too quick, reading)

100 Bullets Vol. 1-13 Trade Paperbacks (incomplete at this time, but likely to crack the top 5 once it finishes)

Planet Hulk Hardcover

So I come to this board more than any other message board around. I love wrestling, I love EWR, I'm a video game fanatic, I think the posters on here are some of the funniest people I've ever read, but I have noticed a general lack of comic book goodness.

Does anyone else on here like the ol' funny books?

If so, which ones?

Personally, I grew up a Marvelite, then made a transition to DC and now I'm kind of even on my tastes.

A few random things to strike up some conversation...

MARVEL

I love Captain America (way before they killed him). I think Ed Brubaker is the best comic book writer that Marvel has. Dan Slott is second.

Spider-Man is better now than it has been in years. I personally don't think they should have gotten rid of the marriage, but it has led to some of the best stories I've read in awhile.

The X-Men are getting interesting again. I'm a sucker for 90s X-Characters. Messiah Complex bringing Cable, Gambit and Bishop to the forefront of the X-Universe yet again is a great thing.

Brian Bendis is overrated. Secret Invasion may be a good idea, but lord, I hate his New Avengers and Mighty Avengers. Bah!

JMS writes a great Thor.

Brian Bendis may not be as overrated as I stated earlier... His Ultimate Spider-Man is AMAZING... well... not Amazing... but you get what I'm saying...

Bucky coming back is the equivalent of the Undertaker. Sounds like a shitty concept on paper... Rocked my socks off in reality.

The Red Skull should also be a villain for the X-Men. He's a former freaking Nazi! I'm pretty sure that he would hate the X-Men.

Marvel's Digital Comics Unlimited (DCU) is pretty much a waste of hard earned funds. They don't have full runs. That sucks.

Magneto is the greatest Marvel villain! Hail Lord Magneto!

Hawkeye is also the MAN. Well, Hawkeye before Avengers Disassembled was the MAN.

Thanks to WWH and Civil War, I have a new appreciation of Iron Man. He may not be 100% hero but he is a much deeper and thus better realized character.

Mark Millar's Ultimates Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 will never be beat. The best Ultimate universe stories ever. And again Captain America and Hawkeye are the MEN!

As much as people love Peter David, his writing just doesn't do it for me. Although his Hulk was one of the better comic runs of the modern age.

Annihilation rocked. Long live Nova and Drax.

DC

Grant Morrison, may in fact, be the best comic book writer of all time. Keith Giffen, Ed Brubaker, Robert Kirkman, Dan Slott, Geoff Johns, Kurt Busiek and Mark Millar are all knocking on his door though.

I think Jason Todd playing the role of Anti-Batman and being a true vigilante is an awesome idea. His resurrection by Superboy-Prime Punch is shit though. Ra's should be 100% responsible.

Batman is my favorite comic character of ALL TIME. Robin (Tim Drake) is my second. Nightwing (Dick Grayson) is my third. Notice a trend?

The Joker is the greatest villain of all time. I can't wait to see the Dark Knight (R.I.P. Heath Ledger).

Superman is a crap character. "Oooh look at me! I can't be hurt! There is no dramatic tension in any of my titles!"

(I know the same can be said for Batman... but I just really hate Superman...)

Sinestro Corps was one of the BEST stories at DC... EVER.

I hate the LEGION.

I miss Superboy (Kon-El) and Impulse (Bart Allen).

I thought Blue Beetle's death (and the issue it appeared in) was one of the best written, most moving comics in DC's history.

I really miss Superboy (Kon-El) and Impulse (Bart Allen).

I think Hush was a really cool (and pretty... thanks Jim Lee!) story. I think Hush should be used more.

Jeph Loeb was the best thing that ever happened to Two-Face.

Justice Society is a great book.

*Controversial Statement Alert* I hope Final Crisis kills off the old guard of the DC Universe (Bruce, Diana, Clark, Hal, Wally, etc.) and replaces them with Legacy characters (Tim as Nightwing, Jason Todd as Batman, Kon-El as Superman, Bart as Flash, Cassie Sansmark as WW, etc.). Over 50 years of history... let the old Guard become the new New Gods...

I think that DC needs to make better movies (besides Batman Begins and The Dark Knight or course...).

I think that DC's animated movies will eventually be better than Marvel's. Superman/Doomsday sucked. And I thought I would love it since Superman dies... uh, spoiler?

Leslie Tompkins needs a retcon...

I love the Watchmen. A lot.

Booster Gold may be the best DC comic not involving Batman or Grant Morrison...

Swamp Thing was a great series. So was Sandman. So was Books of Magic.

I really really miss Superboy (Kon-El) and Impulse (Bart Allen).

Superboy-Prime will one day be Superboy's (Kon-El) and Impulse's (Bart Allen) BITCH. And on that day I will laugh, cry, and become a full DC Comics fanboy once again.

Indies and Random Comics Thoughts

The Walking Dead is a great series.

Spawn sucks. I used to love it but it seems that McFarlane would rather focus on toys. AND I LOVE ME SOME MCFARLANE TOYS!

Alan Moore used to be a great Comic Book writer. I loved Watchmen, Killing Joke, Last Superman Story, V For Vendetta, even his WildC.A.T.s run and first two League of Extraordinary Gentlemen stories. Lately though he is so focused on pornography and his stories lack the spark they used to. I felt guilty when I picked up his third League book. And don't get me started on that other piece of trash... I will not mention its name. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE me some naked women... but come on... enough is enough Alan. We need your SUPER HERO stories back.

I would love to read Miracle Man/Marvel Man. Does ANYONE know where I can buy the collection online?

Ok... That's enough. Come on guys! Disagree with the above statements... Agree with the above statements... Either way let's get a dedicated Comic Book thread going...

No offence, but that's what this entire thread is about. But since you're obvious just trying to drum up more activity, good job.

Thats partially my fault, he started a comic book thread in the lounge, unawares of this thread, so I moved his post in here.

I'm one of the (now seemingly growing) few who like what Stark has done and view him entirely as a hero. He may not do what seems "right" in theory, but in practise his entire purpose and character has been devoted to protecting the people he's meant to and stop 'villainy'. That pretty much sums up a hero.

Sums up a hero? It also sums up Magneto's beliefs. Doom's too. Magneto does what he feels he has to, to stop people from persecuting Mutants. He fought against his best friend (Xavier) even though he didn't want to. Take out Mutants and replace it with Heroes, change Xavier to Captain America and, well... you get the idea. Doom tries to get power to save his mother's soul from Hell... It is all a matter of perspective...

Lets face it: as a whole, Civil War was a big, steaming pile of crap and a serious clusterfuck.

You had characters being written completely out of character:

Reed Richards defending the HUAC for screwing over an uncle who he claims he loved? I don't think so.

The whole Thor clone thing does seriously reek of villainy, no ifs ands or buts; the ends DO NOT always justify the means, and I *might* be able to buy it if they had scrapped the clone after it killed Bill Foster. But what happened? Hercules took care of the clone once and for all, off-panel. (I actually liked the way that was handled, as it was humorous kind of and not showing what he did makes it more horrifying since it leaves things to your imagination)

The Thing fleeing to France?! I call SERIOUS bullshit on that. Ben Grimm is a fighter, not a goddamn coward. More than likely he would've gone and handed Reed his head then sided with the anti-reg renegades.

Don't even get me started on Peter unmasking or the way Steve surrendered.

Sally Floyd in Frontline takes the cake: she says Cap is out of touch because he doesn't use Myspace, watch NASCAR or a bunch of other bull that ISN'T FUCKING IMPORTANT IN THE GODDAMN SLIGHTEST. Hell, Cap used to have his own BBS and hotline and carried around a portable computer before it was fashionable, so don't try to tell me that Steve didn't know how to use a computer. (Did I mention I want the Sally Floyd character dead and want to personally bitchslap her creator until he bleeds since she has my last name?)

If Secret Invasion doesn't lead to the Registration Act being undone, I'm hoping at some point....preferrably after Steve Rogers is revived, and I predict that will likely be around Cap #50 if not before - they're planning a Cap movie for 2009, maybe 2010, and I doubt they're gonna want to have him still dead before it comes out.....that the Registration Act backfires big time and Steve throws it in Stark's face and tells him to piss off while he deals with it, since the whole thing's partially Stark's fault.

Iron Man and Captain America used to be my two favorite Marvel heroes, but I've been fed up with the way Stark has been written for over a decade, and the *real* Cap is dead at the moment.....supposedly. (I still think there's going to be a swerve and that wasn't really Steve Rogers that Sharon shot, despite all the evidence that says it was)
