Streetlight Manifesto & related bands (Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution etc) are putting together a project called "99 Songs Of Revolution" that's going to be put out this year. They've been doing these live, apparently;

"Hell" by Squirrel Nut Zippers

"Linoleum" by NOFX

"Hey Ska!" by Suicide Machines

"Summertime" by George Gershwin

I had the pleasure of seeing them do "Linoleum" in December last year when they played Newcastle, and fuck, it was AMAZING. Actually, the entire set was unbelievable -

Jeniferever, who are like this laid back Swedish post-rock kind of band, have possibly produced one of my favourite covers recently, covering Bruce Springsteen's "One Step Up", it just works absolutely perfectly, making a gorgeous song even better - http://www.myspace.com/jeniferever (it's on the player)

Brian Fallon is posting a bunch of covers at the minute. His cover of Tom Waits "Cold Cold Ground" is pretty good (on his myspace) although his cover of Springsteen's "Backstreets" was fucking awful. His cover of "The Weight" by The Band, is still the best of the bunch by a mile -

I will get off Springsteen in a second, but Paul Baribeau also has an album of Springsteen covers out called "Darkness On The Edge Of Town", I think they're recordings from a few years back, but have just surfaced. You can hear a few of the tunes on a special myspace set up, "Born To Run" is AMAZING - www.myspace.com/darknessontheedgeofyourtowntour

Basically yeah, I'm loving some good covers at the minute.

As for the cover you posted, I love the video...but it kind of suffers from the same thing lots of pop-punk styled covers do...they tend to get a little dull by the 2nd verse.

In terms of Springsteen covers, there is a great album called Light of Day. It is a two disc collection and I think it was for some sort of Jersey based charity, but it is a real gem. It has some heavy hitters like Elvis Costello covering Brilliant Disguise, Pete Yorn doing an amazing cover of New York City Serenade, and covers by Billy Bragg, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, Steve Wynn, The Clarks, and a few other folks of note.

Nils Lofgren (long time E-street/Crazyhorse guitar man) does a nice cover of man on the top, and there is a great cut of Downbound Train by Kirk Kelly.

The real stand out, however, is an ethereal cover of Something in the Night by Matthew Ryan. Definitely check this last one out.

Benji didn't even get the best cover of

:/

Also, Frank Turner has some awesome covers.

- "The State Lottery" (Propagandhi)

- "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" (The Postal Service)

- "I Want To Break Free" (Queen)

- "Rain King" (Counting Crows)

Actually, there's loads, just search "Frank Turner cover" on Youtube.

*Ahem*

Oops! I Did It Again! by.... Children of Bodom

Temptation... by Cradle of Filth

On a more serious note - does anyone remember Flashdance and in particular the song Maniac?

Maniac.... by Firewind

They've done loads, but seldom are they actually good covers. Most are just good for a laugh. These two I quite like as songs, though.

Firewind's Maniac cover is awesome. At first it was a bit "wtf? Maniac? Firewind?" but after you've listened to Apollo-era Firewind for a while it starts to make perfect sense. Whether that's a good thing or not I don't know. :P Definitely better than the Carnival of Crap version anyway. :P

Of course, this means I have to drag out the 'other two' awesome power metal 80's pop covers that I post in every thread because they own face:

Freedom Call - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes

And now I can add to that~!

and

is also aweeeeesome. Though I don't remember the original much (The Scorpions were off my radar for too long :(). But damnit... awesome awesome. I love covers that are re-made to be so awesome and in the style of the covering band that they sound like they always were. I mean, bands doing covers of other people's songs in the original style is obviously good too, but sometimes a band comes along and 'borrows' the song rather than just singing it, and that's awesome. Oh come on. Firewind do obvious 'Maniac' done by Power Metal band cover version. It sounds exactly like what you'd expect it to. At least there is a bit more variation to what Carnival In Coal do :P

I need Skummy and....I think Dragsy.....in here to help me fight my corner >_>

That's my only problem with some covers, that you do kinda get exactly what it says on the tin, and it can be a bit boring. I mean, I like heavier metal covers of pop songs, but sometimes, it doesn't really sound that exciting. Sometimes straight covers work (Katatonia 'Nightmares By The Sea'), sometimes they don't (.....any Power Metal cover :shifty:). All joking aside on that last point, but it sometimes sounds a bit phoned in.

EDIT: Having got a general metal covers torrent a while ago, I must also admit to being partial to the Avantasia ABBA cover though.

SECOND EDIT: Actually, it was this one I'd heard

Sinergy doing Gimme Gimme Gimme. ABBA songs just make good metal songs >_> Edited by rvdwannabe

I think it's guaranteed that every time a thread comes up like this Reilly will give a mention to that Abba cover. Which is good. :)

My favourite cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Uz_IiRplXo

I know tons of other more obscure ones but I'm totally stuck right now. I'll get back to you. :)

Metalman, that link doesn't work for me.

Personal faves of mine include the CIC one I posted earlier and,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwlmHPq_Ge0

Mnemic 'Wild Boys' (Duran Duran cover)

That's ok, not a huge favourite, but I quite like it.

Katatonia 'Nightmares By The Sea' (Jeff Buckley cover)

The Cure 'World In My Eyes' (Depece Mode cover)

Dillinger Escape Plan ft Mike Patton 'Come To Daddy' (Aphex Twin cover)

(DEP version with AT video)

And possibly my favourite

Crowbar 'Dreamweaver' (Gary Wright cover)

Couldn't find a youtube version of Life Of Agony doing Don't You Forget About Me, though.

Sorted. Though don't yet your hopes up. I can't imagine you'll like it all that much. :P

You offend me :shifty:. What I've heard from James Taylor, I really like, and this song is pretty sweet. Although I wouldn't have known it was a cover personally.

And I should have listed that Ben Folds song on my list, but forgot about it. Really good cover.
