Not played in ages, picked up Rome again last night and remembered how shit I am at this game. Making money? No problem. Winning battles? No problem. Actually remembering to expand and perform senate missions... I forget. The main point of the game is the thing I forget. Horrible.

I usually go Julii, but they're kind of the boring faction. Has anyone else played as the Scipii and the Brutii? Which is more interesting to play as?

I've got the original Shogun, Rome, Empire and Napoleon. All great in their own right. Moved onto Napoleon now though as it's the era of warfare I'm most interested in. Same as you though, I just itch to get into the battles and totally forget to sort out my parliament or upgrade my farms.

That's why I'm so terrible at EU3 - I just try and take over parts of France, Wales, Scotland all the time.

I was the same with Gaul last night, they kept pushing units towards me, and I kept pushing them away and being like "brobarian, chill out, man, I just wanted this one settlement for my senate mission". Eventually I got bored and just sent a bunch of units to take out the invasion and move the fight to one of their own settlements. It was their own damn fault

Playing Med 2 mostly at the moment, but have Empire, Napoleon and Rome.

Wait Rome is the game with the elephants right? My first battle with an elephant unit, i decimated a much larger force, with minimal casualities.

The siege missions in Rome were good. Elephants can get massacred though with care. They get worn out if they're run around everywhere. However used properly they're just ridiculously powerful.

I used to play a ton of Med 2, I was great with Spain and France but shit with just about everyone else. No idea why, but I found starting as one of those and then kicking the shit out of the other was very effective.

Was Rome the game in the series that the fanboys didnt like? I vaguely remember negativity directed towards Rome but i quite enjoyed the game.

Rome brought in a huge amount of changes from the original Medieval and Shogun games. Understandable if some of the fans didn't like them, I suppose.

I've got Rome, Napoleon, and Shogun 2. Sounds like I should be playing Medieval 2 though.

As for Rome, I recommend Brutii. The Senate makes you go take Greece. It's a bitch. The Scipii are more naval based than the others FYI.

I only ever played MTW but I never thought much of it. The battles looked nice but I found them to be a bit samey and the campaign mode was far too simplistic, as well as historically and geographically inaccurate.

It's by no means a bad game - I just far prefer the paradox games if I'm after some historical grand strategy.

I found the problem with Medieval 2 was that there was simply too much going on, and it's really hard to manage everything once you grow in size. I guess it's easy to see why balance of power politics came into effect in the Renaissance and onward.

There's a really big difference between the original MTW and later games. You should give either Rome or M2TW a go. Both shouldn't be more than £10 at the moment.

Rome has tons of mods going for it that are still being updated today. I gave Rome Total Realism a go a few months back, felt like whole new game.
