Introducing... Anti-Venom...

antivenom.jpg

Yes, that's actually its name. I can't say I'm not intruiged, but by the same token I'm a little dissapointed they've just swapped colours, given it a bit more of a Carnage style look and put it out there. At least they're not claiming it's something it's not and considering the amount of new villains post BND I can't say I object to one being a new twist on an old character.

Apparently it's due August.

This is Free Comic Book Day....at least in the U.S. and Canada, anyway. I picked up about 10 or 11 free comics (and meant to get a couple more but forgot to grab them), a free Iron Man HeroClix, and a free Star Wars Gammorean Guard miniature.

The only comic in my box at the shop was Batman #675.

I just found this awesome comic book store near where I live. Before I'd only had access to the graphic novels from WHSmith, but this has completely opened my eyes. I went in and was amazed with the amount of stories going on. Oh and I love the thin comic format, one story lasts one issue, instead of three in one and I must say I'm addicted.

I bought the latest Captain America, and was entertained, well sort of. I thought it was a little poor, only at the last page did I really get a taste for it.

But I went back today and I was determined to buy a Batman Comic and I bought Batman Detectives issue 842, the latest one I believe. I read it slowly and took it all in and I loved the story of The Suit of Sorrows. I really enjoyed teh character devolopment for Batman and I'll be sure to pick up new issues each month. Though, I have to say, I'd love to learn more about Gotham Jack. I think there a little few questions left un-answered.

I went fishing around at the back of the store until I found some Moon Knight comics, I'd been meaning to pick some up for a while and I was looking forward to buying a few. But I couldn't find any consecutive comics until I came across three issue's of Mark Spencer: Moon Knight. There three comics happen to bet he trilogy wheere Moon Knight teams up with Spiderman and The Punisher so I'm really looking forward to getting into them.

Overall, I'm really happy with comics on a whole lately. But I'm looking for more to possibly look at. I asked Benji and he recomended me to The New Avengers and Mighty Avengers as of my preferences. I'd love to hear you guys opinions.

My recommendations:

Batman

Justice Society of America

*maybe* Wonder Woman

Unfortunately, I can't recommend any Marvel right now, as the only book by them I'm reading is....Captain America, which you already picked up and apparently didn't like too much. You'd probably have been more entertained if you'd started reading with #34, though.

Also, there's a 6 issue mini published by IDW called FX you should check out, as it very much has an old school comics feel to it - especially since the artist is John Byrne. The first two issues are already out.

I wouldn't suggest starting with Mighty Avengers or New Avengers at this exact moment. The last two issues I read (from last month...by subscription doesn't come until the end of each month) were both pretty much about furthering the intrigue of Secret Invasion and not involved with the teams themselves.

Some good stuff to jump into without the need to do much research:

- Ms. Marvel

- Avengers Invaders (just started up last week)

- Invincible Iron Man (also started up this month)

- Uncanny X-Men

I could list tons more but those four are fairly new reader friendly. If you can get back issues anything X-Men related is superb (older Uncanny, X-Men Vol.2, New X-Men, or X-Men Legacy). Mighty Avengers and New Avengers are normally excellent, but everything is so tied up in Secret Invasion right now that it seems like nothing is moving forward. Also go back and look for Planet Hulk and World War Hulk...I'm not much of a Hulk fan but I loved these.

Oops. Forgot to mention Avengers/Invaders. I've seen some advance previews of the artwork - and I also have the FCBD sketchbook - and its going to be great.

Ms. Marvel? Really? Who is the writer on that at the moment? Is it still Brian Reed? I used to have Ms. Marvel in my box but dropped it because the writing was so-so and they switched to an art team I didn't care for. (Sort of...they put Mike Wieringo (R.I.P.) on the comic, which was fine, but they gave him an inker that sucked)

I'd avoid anything with art by Greg Land - and now maybe David Mack, as well - on principle. Land is a hack who traces images from magazines, and even traces and re-uses his own artwork and swipes from other artists, and makes modifications rather than drawing everything freehand. * David Mack proved that he's a swiper, as a lot of his work on New Avengers #39 was swiped from Gen 13 comics done by Adam Hughes.

* Land mostly uses fashion and porn magazines as his sources, but I've heard he's also used some wrestling magazines as he apparently used an image of Shawn Michaels in a comic once. Personally, I'm hoping that doesn't mean we're eventually going to see Colossus using the People's Elbow someday.....

Yeah, Reed is still on Ms. Marvel. I honestly don't find his writing all that bad, although I'm admittedly a bit biased since I'm a pretty big fan of the character in general. Honestly I consider the book easily accessible, and since Carol is so involved with many other characters through her Avengers connections it's a pretty good place to get a taste for other parts of Marvel's universe. The book has it's problems, but I like it.

man, I found so many paperbacks at Books-A-Million I wanted to buy, but I don't want to buy each volume. Do they not release all volumes in one book? I wanted to get the Civil War stuff, but it's the same way. Still can't find The Preacher at any of my local places, but I did find it at Amazon, but again, it's seperate volumes.

and the Angel Season 6 paperback isn't released yet. :(

I'm not sure what you mean, exactly.

Four to Six issues of a book usually get released as one trade paperback. Occasionally, they'll combine three or four trade paperback's to make one bigger edition, but not often, and usually only on the "big" books like Spidey and X-Men.

To those of you who have read them, how're the books in the Toxin series? I've been interested in getting the series between Venom and Carnage during which Carnage is pregnant leading up to the birth of Toxin, and I'm also interested in getting all the Toxin books, but I don't exactly know where to start looking except online.

I mean, would these books be easily findable at a comic book store, or would I probably wind up being better off ordering online in the end anyway? And again, for those who've read them, what are your thoughts?
