Dear God, Disney, why?

Disney has lost a lot of it's charm.

Watching old 1940's - 60's Disney cartoons, I found them to be much better then some of the stuff they have produced in the past 15 years.

Nothing more charming than 1946's "Song of the South!"

Hmmm...I wonder if Disney's ancestors had a financial hand in The Birth of a Nation....

My wife loves dogs and we have a rat terrier/chihuahua mixed breed, so we'll probably end up owning this and watching it several times.

Sons of bitches.

Although chihuahuas typically really do not like children, so a lot of parents are going to buy their kids chihuahuas because of the cute movie and a bunch of kids will get their faces bitten. So at least there's that.

You laugh, but have you actually seen "Song of the South"? I have, and I think the reaction to Uncle Remus and the main story is a bit overblown. Yes, I'm not comfortable with the racial undertones of the story at all and I can see why Disney would want to keep this one away from general consumption, but it's actually a well-done piece and a good story. Plus, how can you NOT like Brer Rabbit?

I'm not a racist, before anyone jumps on me for it. I just think the movie gets unfairly slagged. It's not like they had people in blackface or anyone getting lynched -- they just portrayed a "magical negro" type character. Yeah, slavery's bad, mmkay, but too much is made of that.

Listening to some SModCast this morning, Disney also did a cartoon in 1948 on Johnny Appleseed. The real Johnny Appleseed was like many others of his time (the late 1800s) of that which I mean he's a horrible racist who also probably drank a lot.

And let's not forgot those wonderful Jive-talking Gorillas in "The Jungle Book".
