New shit I'm loving at the minute;

  • "Miike Snow" by Miike Snow (they wrote "Toxic" for Britney Spears, you know they're going to be awesome)
  • "Octahedron" by The Mars Volta (RETURN TO FUCKING FORM!!!)
  • "Tale Of The Complex Circuit" by The Syncope Threshold (Fans of Protest The Hero MUST check these out)
  • "Hands" by Little Boots (A couple of duds, but easily one of the best pop records in recent memory)
  • "All We Need..." by Racing Exit 13 (a little bit Lifetime, a little bit powerpunk)
  • "Amanda Leigh" by Mandy Moore (I adore Mandy...more upbeat than "Wild Hope"...not sure which I prefer yet though, another great slice of pop)
  • "I Hope Your Writing This Down" by Exit On The Left (I'll let them off with the spelling/grammar mistake because they're Belgian, catchy pop-punk stuff)
  • "New Again" by Taking Back Sunday (this has really surprised me, after losing the 'grizzly' guy I thought that'd be it for them, but they've really brought it again...shits on the new Billy Talent)
  • "Blue Roses" by Blue Roses (definitely going to be near the top at the end of the year, gorgeous voice, gorgeous songs)
  • "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin" by The Low Anthem (this has been sitting on my computer for a while, it wasn't until the review in NARC that I gave it a listen, gorgeous stuff, Bon Iver fans should check them out, another album I could see highly placed at the end of the year)
  • "Yeah So" by Slow Club (It's good, but maybe not as good as I hoped...but I think it might be a grower, as I'm enjoyed it more the 2nd and 3rd time round)
  • "Music For Falling From Trees" by Peter Broderick (I adore this man, he's back with another spectacular instrumental album..."The Dream" is one of the most beautiful tracks I've heard all year)

Also love that at 4 this morning, I was sitting in the frontroom of some guy I'd never met before, rocking some Gaslight Anthem on Virgin On Demand, talking about Ben Folds, Manchester Orchestra and Dananananananananananananananananananananannaaakyroyd.

The new Black Moth Super Rainbow is brilliant - much more listenable than anything I've heard from them before. It's quite lovely.

New Malcolm Middleton...not so much. Only listened to it once and half-asleep so far, but it didn't seem to be anything special.

I didn't know there was until the weekend, when I bought it. As I said, I've not "properly" listened to it, but nothing jumped out at me in the same way as anything off the last two albums - nothing that made me think "God, I should've/could've written that" as far as biting cynical beauty goes. It's good, but not Malcolm Middleton good. Maybe it's a grower, though.

Just gave 'They Know What Ghost Know' by Yppah a listen. It's excellent. Was a big fan of their first album when it came out a few years back and this is another good one if you enjoy electronic instrumental music. :)

Also picked these up today:

'Blue Roses' by Blue Roses

'Chunk of Change' by Passion Pit

'Origin Myth' by Joe Driscoll

'Caffeine, Alcohol, Sunshine, Money' by Jared Mees & The Grown Children

Here's my favourites of the year. IN ORDER. Bear in mind I still have lots and lots to listen to still that could easily leapfrog any of these if they live up to my expectations.

1. Metric - Fantasies

2. Alasdair Roberts - Spoils

3. Loney, Dear - Dear John

4. Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers

5. Maximo Park - Quicken The Heart

6. My Latest Novel - Deaths & Entrances

7. Aidan Moffat & The Best Ofs - How To Get To Heaven From Scotland

8. Peter Doherty - Grace/Wastelands

9. The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

10. Bob Dylan - Together Through Life

11. Justin Townes Earle - Midnight At The Movies

12. Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

13. Graham Coxon - The Spinning Top

14. Bruce Springsteen - Working On A Dream

15. The Maccabees - Wall Of Arms

16. Dananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone

17. The View - Which Bitch?

18. Morrissey - Years of Refusal

19. Fredo Viola - The Turn

20. Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career/Beirut - March of the Zapotec (also both very disappointed. was hoping for Beirut and Camera Obscura both to be solid top 5 albums. :()

EDIT: Just noticed that 7 of these are Scottish, more than any other country which is quite odd. I am not a xenophobic listener or anything. Promise!

I'm pretty much stuck on the new Mars Volta album. They rank right up there with NIN and Dillinger Escape Plan on the list of bands I'm psyched out of my mind to see at Bonnaroo this weekend.

New album is ace. Personally, I think they made a return to form with the last album. Because the one before that...wow, it fucking sucked. :P

The Get Up Kids play the following UK gigs - billed as their last ever - in August. Spy Catcher support. Tickets on sale Friday.

August 16 - The Peel, Kingston

August 17 - Birmingham Academy 2

August 18 - Manchester Academy 2

August 19 - Camden Electric Ballroom

London...not playing Leeds/Reading, so it has to be done. :D

London ticket booked. :D

LAST UK SHOWS!!! :o I wanna do another. :( The Peel is apparently sold out already, fucking hell...tickets don't even 'properly' go on-sale until Friday.

Yes. It is pretty good actually. Although the only reason it's at the top is because this has been a relatively rubbish year for music altogether from my point of view. Hence Camera Obscura which I dislike still managing to get onto my top 20.

And Fantasies isn't even my favourite Metric album.

I hope Brian Fallon doesn't do that thing punk people do where they basically just play punk songs on a acoustic guitar and call themselves acoustic artists.

Actually scratch that. The Navasink Banks just came on shuffle there which I haven't listened to in months. He knows how to do good acoustic songs. :D
