2. antony & the johnsons - the crying light

3. kid cudi; man on the moon

8. patrick wolf; the bachelor

9. basement jaxx; scars

really dug the grizzly bear album; had vaguely heard of them before this year, but really after hearing this album it got me hooked. i now am addicted to yellow house as well. i love antony, so obviously i'm going to like to the crying light. i didn't connect too it as much as his last album, but i still dug it. kid cudi's man on the moon is probably the most interesting album of the year; it's weird, fun and a bit alienating, but somehow the dude makes it work. la roux's and xx's self titled debut both served great purposes - they brought something a bit different to mainstream audiences, while still playing it relatively safe so as to make the music enjoyable and strangely addicting.

Mew's album was by far the best album of the year.

Oh my flatmate's friend bought me tickets to see them but I didn't go because I was doing something else and I also only knew like two of their songs. So she gave them to her dad instead. Apparently they were really good so I kind of wish I went. haha.

that is my Mew story.

I'm finding it difficult to remember everything I bought this year, though it's probably the least "new" music I've bought in a good few years.

Probably the best album of the year, though, has to be SunnO)))'s "Monoliths & Dimensions", which is just taking their style and modus operandus so far beyond what I had assumed would be it's logical conclusion and coming out with something truly beautiful. It's the first time that, on record, they've come close to being as mindblowing as they are live - and in many ways surpassing the live experience.

Can't be bothered looking through CDs or old iTunes libraries to remind myself what I bought this year, but there's a high chance I'll pop in and out of this thread whenever I have to DJ and remind myself of something good.

Baroness - Blue Record

Pelican - What We All Come To Need

Kylesa - Static Tensions

This trio of excellent sludge/post-metal stuff solidified my belief in the fact that this style of music will break on through. Mammoth riffs, soulful vocals and excellent pacing were the order of the day.

Marduk - Wormwood

Immortal - All Shall Fall

Two venerable black metal acts, two excellent records. Immortal came back with a huge album off of their hiatus, and took their epic, riff-heavy metal format even further. Meanwhile, Marduk shedded the excess thrash influences that plagued their last album and retained just enough to make "Wormwood" a fucking slaughterhouse.

Napalm Death - Time Waits For No Slave

Afgrund - Vid Helvetes Grindar

Skitliv - Skandinavisk Misantropi

Mumakil - Behold The Failure

Graf Orlock - Destination Time Today

It was brutal, it was abusive, it was short. It was the grind year 2009.a
