TMNT live action reboot

Michael Bay seems to be at it again: This time the creator of mega-blockbusters is planning to produce a new, live-action version of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." But, if he has his way, he may need to change the name to "Not So Mutant" Alien Turtles. Definitely less catchy.

The "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" director told a crowd recently at the Nickelodeon Upfront New York event that instead of the series fans have loved about a mutant strain of turtles from earth who are obsessed with pizza and turn into two-footed creatures thanks to some transmutant goo, Bay's reptiles will simply be an alien race.

As first called out on the blog StuffWeLike, Bay explained his vision for the 2013 remake: "When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie." Wha? And then, "The turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny, and completely loveable."

For those a little fuzzy on these "loveable" creatures: First, it was a cartoon. Then it became a live-action film franchise in the 1990s. The original story revolves around four mutant two-footed turtles who are trained by a rat on the art of being ninjas, and are named after Renaissance artists. The four fight crime from their home base in the sewers of New York City.

The comic book, then television show, and finally film franchise were popular in the late '80s and early '90s. It is, in short, the perfect vehicle to be mucked up by Bay. At least that's how fans reacted on Twitter and blogs.

Illuminati tweeted, "Michael Bay is re-making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If Michael Bay destroys this classic, he will surely be sacrificed for his mistakes."

A fan of the "TMNT" bemoaned, "'TMNT' fans, prepare to have Michael Bay destroy your childhood the same way he's already done with mine. Three words: They are aliens." The A.V. Club opined, "Bay's willingness to reshape Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bows to no canonical authority—not even that inherent in its title."

The blog /Film agreed, arguing, "If you're going to make a movie about mutant turtles, that's what they should be, right?" Bay will produce the movie. Jonathan Liebesman ("Wrath of the Titans") will direct.

Fans can be on the lookout for the new, probably explosion-filled, action-packed alien version of "TMNT" that is scheduled to open December 25, 2013.

Aliens? Aliens?! Its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles..not Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles. Did Michael Bay learn nothing from the attempt to cram aliens into Indiana Jones? Seriously, can already say this movie is going to be terrible..

First, it was a cartoon.

Comic book, actually :shifty:

At first I thought "Well, at least now we can see the Technodrome", then I read the article. This seems like quite possibly the worst thing since Batman and Robin, or that fucked up version of Superman that Kevin Smith talked about. :shifty:

Well thank god for that! I always found it hard to get into the story of TMNT because, while I can accept Teenage Ninja Turtles, the mutant factor was simply too ridiculous for me. Now I can connect with the characters on a more personal level and truly enjoy the story that Mr. Bay will be telling!

Seriously though Michael Bay is the biggest hack I've ever seen in my life and I hope he steps on a rake.

How does he keep getting work?

I understand that his movies make billions of dollars, but they don't make billions because of him. In fact, they'd probably make more if he wasn't attached.

Aside from the sub-title from the original poster, not a single person has mentioned that he was directing - probably because the article states that he is indeed the producer. This still reeks and Bay influence and it's still going to suck.

 Yes, I based my reply on the sub-title, but also some discussion that was going on in Donators. And just because one is a producer doesn't mean they can't direct. So, kindly shut it.

Anyway, yes, as Producer Michael Bay will have his sticky little fingers on this project because he's a producer that cares. Unfortunately, he's had a streak of shitty things to his name, so, it sucks that he happens to be one who cares. HOWEVER, given the fact that he isn't directing, there is still hope that the movie could end up being entertaining.

I'm really not one to care anymore whether my "childhood is getting raped" with situations like this. It's bound to happen given the black hole of ideas Hollywood has become, and it's not like TMNT was gonna make me feel like I was 8 years old again. People wanna try something new with something old to see what works and what stories they tell. I cannot blame them for trying.

Tl;dr: Shut up, ApSham. This news doesn't faze me. The only thing that sucks is Michael Bay has a poor track record, but the movie may still have a chance.

Yawn.

Actually no.

This isn't an issue of "oh, it could still be good!" it's an issue of.. if you're going to do it like this, then why bother attaching the TMNT name or likeness to it at all? It's a bullshit move to get people to go and see it based off nostalgia and what bothers me is that it could be done in a proper way that would make me feel like I was eight years old again. A lot of people in this thread most likely feel the same way. There's no reason to "oh, wait and see!" when there has never been a reason to do so.
