I am so jacked for this season. Partially for the football, partially to see how Boise State rebounds from losing THAT senior class - but mostly for the return of my favourite NCAAF podcast. Just over two weeks now :w00t:

[All right, Round 1 of the sure to be wrong conference predictions for 2012. Have fun, poke fun, and of course feel free to discuss. Also, completely ignore if you wish. Either way we'll see just how horribly wrong I am.]

THE SUN BELT

Predicted order of finish:

1. TROY*

2. FIU*

2. WKU*

3. ARK ST*

4. Louisiana*

5. MID TENN ST^

6. North TX^

7. ULM

8. FAU

9. South Alabama

^potentially bowl eligible

FIU is the obvious choice here as they return all but one on defense and seven on offense. They have two of the most important losses in the conference though in TY Hilton (WR) and Wesley Carroll (QB). They were primed last year but couldn't get the job done against the "heavyweights" of the SBC. This year the top of the conference looks to be improved across the board. No dynamic playmaker is going to hurt them. They do return Kedrick Rhodes (easily the best RB returning in the conference) but have to find another dynamic player. That's where Troy has them. Eric Thomas will be competing for the title of best WR in the conference, if not best offensive player. Corey Robinson (QB) was 2nd in total offense last year. The key to Troy though, is their depth. While FIU/Troy should battle it out for the conference title my official team to watch in the SBC is WKU. Sixteen come back from a squad that surprised everyone last year. Yes, they lose Bobby Rainey and his all world RB skills. That's pretty much it though. They only lost ten lettermen period, and have two of the best defensive players in the conference in LBs Andrew Jackson and Quanterus Smith. Add to that their top notch ST unit and WKU can easily sneak into the picture. At minimum, they should go bowling this year after getting snubbed last year despite being 7-5. I give WKU the nod over Arkansas ST and Louisiana for two reasons. Coaching change (ARK ST) and defense (both). The Ragin Cajuns and Red Wolves both only have four starters coming back on defense, and Arkansas St loses over 25 letterman. Guz Malzhan inherits what might be the best player in the league in QB Ryan Aplin but he's got to find a RB (as he's already kicked Auburn transfer Dyer off the team) to help him out on the ground. Nobody is going to be surprised this year. Louisiana looks primed to be one of, if not the top offense in the conference but has to break in too many new starters on a defensive unit that gave up over 30pts five times in conference play.

The rest of the conference is really a coin toss in deciding whether they'll be decent teams or not. MID TENN ST has the talent but something went awry last year. They have to go on the road for three of the four toughest conference games and will be relying on an LSU transfer at RB in Drayton Calhoun. While I love North Texas they just can't stop anyone and that doesn't appear to be any better of a situation this season. The addition of Texas State and UTSA to FBS football is already rearing its head in terms of talent going to Denton. Guys like Lance Dunbar and Patrick Cobbs found their way to the Mean Green but there looks to be a lull right now. Their biggest playmaker is their P Will Atterberry but they will have some help with transfers. ULM does avoid Troy but play three of the other four toughest opponents on the road. Not enough comes back on defense but the Warhawks should put up good numbers when they have the ball. Their progression has been steady but a few other schools have made measurable jumps the last few years and ULM looks to have been passed by. FAU will be playing their first season with a coach other than legendary Howard Schnellenberger. They've got starters back (15) and only lost 16 letterman. Unfortunately they lost Alfred Morris (RB) and don't have anyone on the roster that looks to step up and be a playmaker on a consitant basis. New HC Carl Pelini (yes, of the Nebraska Pelini's) will bring some hard nosed attitude with him and have the Owls playing tough football. They won't have to start the season with five straight road games as they are fully moved into their brand spanking new stadium (opened in October last year). I call for them to be greatly improved from their 1-11 record last year. Then there's newcomer South Alabama. So new that they didn't even make the cut for NCAA 13. While they'll get knocked around, it wouldn't surprise me all that much if they don't finish dead last. That said, if they win more than 2 or 3 I will be surprised.

My SBC Select Team:

QB - Ryan Aplin (ARK ST)

RB - Kedrick Jones (FIU) Jyruss Edwards (ULM)

WR - Eric Thomas (TROY) Javone Lawson (Louisiana)

K - Brett Baer (Louisiana)

DL - Tourek Williams (FIU) Greg Hickman (FIU) Brandon McCoy (NT)

LB - Andrew Jackson (WKU) David Hinds (FAU) Jordan Hunt (FIU)

DB - Brynden Trawick (Troy) Chaz Scales (ARK ST)

P - Will Atterberry (NT)

5. Idaho

6. NMSU

7. UTSA

Wow. What used to be the most fun, nonsensical, and down right ridiculous league is now a poor shadow of itself. So poor, that newly christened D1 program Texas State is only making a cameo before bolting to the might Sun Belt (a fantastic move on many levels in my opinion). The other newcomer UTSA ? They're bolting for C-USA after one year (along with Louisiana Tech). So yeah, it's ugly. What very well could be the last year for the WAC is sure to provide plenty of the fun the conference is known for. Why ? Because in all honestly there's only one team that's actaully any good in reality. Louisiana Tech is the returning conference champ, they get 13 starters back from a team that won the conference and played TCU to a touchdown in their bowl last year, and the only two schools that should even come close to sniffing the conference title (Utah/SJ State) they get in the last two weeks when things could already be decided. They have arguably the best WR in the conference in Quinton Patton, the best kicker in the conference in Matt Nelson, a dynamic KR in Lyle Fitte, and have the best OL and Defense (on paper) easily. Injuries are the only thing that can keep them from running away with this conference. I'm going to pick SJSU second purely on "why the fuck not ?" Things severly drop off after LouTech and honestly both SJSU and UTST are the same team. SJSU though has Neol Grigsby who is the other "best" WR in the league and SJSU benifts from two other pretty big things. UTST plays @ Louisiana Tech and SJSU. The Spartans also get De'Loen Eskridge transfered in to play RB (15 starts at MINN over 3 years) who has plenty of experience in a run heavy BIG10. WAC defenders shouldn't be an issue. The wild card for SJSU could actually be another transfer in David Fales. The JC QB was actually recruited at Nevada to sling the ball around there but he decided not to challenge that Kapaernick guy. Utah St won't surprise me if they finish 2nd but they play @ SJSU and Louisiana Tech so the potential upset of the other "contenders" is unlikely. That said, Chuckie Keeton might be able to beat SJSU on his own if he's having a good game. Their backup QB also has starting experience as well and gives UTST what is probably the best overal QB unit in the conference. They look good on paper but the results tell a different story. They had to much trouble and got too much luck last year in too many games for me to really feel they're actually that good.

The rest of the conference is comprised of two NKOTB and two perrenial cellar dwellers. I'm homer picking TXST this high partly because it's a straight homer pick and partly because the rest of the WAC has a very good shot at being that bad. NMSU and Idaho don't have many guys back and the ones they do get back simply weren't good (combined 6-19 last year). TXST players also benefit from having played in the Southland Conference in the FCS, which in all fairness has a few teams that are probably lower level WAC and Sun Belt level talent wise. I'll go ahead and label them my WAC surprise team. Potentially the Bobcats have several difference makers in RBs Marcus Curry (starter at Navy in '09) and Terrence Franks, FS Xavier Daniels, and TE Chase Harper. The biggest thing for TXST is that two of their three potential conference wins (on paper) are at home (Idaho, NSMU). Now, don't get me wrong. I love the little guys and the "we try harder" types but Idaho and NMSU just don't have that much talent. The Vandals will have "The Battleship Lorenzen" reincarnated in Dominique Blackman (6-5 274 reported) at QB but their leading returning rusher had 44 carries last year. 10 starters returning overall from a 2-10 team doesn't inspire much confidence. That, coupled with their two longest road trips (to Texas ST and to Louisiana Tech) are back to back and I just don't see much better than two or three wins. NMSU on the other hand at least has some big time transfers in WRs Kemonte Bateman (ARZ ST) and Kevan Walker (ORG ST), and two decent JC transfers on the DL. Only seven starters return and none of them were all that significant on last year's 4 win team. Finally we have UTSA. The RoadRunners were a lovely story here in San Antonio last year and Larry Coker certainly has the program moving in the right direction. The gap they're trying to close is too big though. Last year's schedule was wall over the place with games against just about every division of college football there is. They had D3 (McMurry, who they lost to), FCS (Sam Houston, McNeese St, Southern Utah), D2 (Minot St), and NAIA (Bacone). While they'll have great crowds and the ability to pop a game at home (beat Georgia St in OT, lost to South Alabama in 2OT - both schools also transitioning to FBS football) the overall depth of talent just won't be enough to do anything measurable for a season or two.

My WAC Select Team

QB - Chuckie Keeton (UTST)

RB - De'Leon Eskridge (SJSU) Terrence Franks (TXST)

WR - Quinton Patterson (Louisiana Tech) Noel Grigsby (SJSU)

K - Matt Nelson (Louisiana Tech)

DL - Travis Johnson (SJSU) IK Enemkpali (Louisiana Tech)

LB - Bojay Filimoeatu (UTST) Conrad Scheidt (Idaho)

DB - Nevin Lawson (UTST) Chad Boyd (Louisiana Tech)

P - Ryan Allen (Louisiana Tech)

Minnesota State head football coach Todd Hoffner faces child pornography charges after being booked by Eagle Lake cops at his home today. t' Division II Mavericks' coach has been on administrative leave since Friday after university officials escorted him off t' practice field.

t' AP says Hoffner hasn't been officially charged but that his booking records are related to child porn. Cops reportedly searched through t' garbage at his home and took his car from t' residence.

Hoffner has been head coach at t' former Mankato State since 2008, compiling a 34-13 record and winning last year's Mineral Water Bowl.

Of course, this has yet to be a headline story on ESPN.com, because its not a D1 school

What's your favorite podcast? I'm so ready for college football.

Notre Dame plays at nine in the morning on the 1st. :)

Didn't see this post!

Vols WR Da'Rick Rodgers suspended from team.

"not expected back" this season ... LOL wow, going to be another rough year.

I wonder who the Vols' new head coach will be next year?

Derek Dooley has to have a winning record this year to keep his job. And by `winning record' I don't mean `win one more game than he loses'. I'm talking something like going at least 8-4. With Rogers suspended, I'd say any chance of that happening may have just flown out the window.

A few iTunes issues getting it up, but if you go to auscfb.com you can access the first podcast of the new season from my fave duo there. It's hidden in a link called "Auscfb" on the homepage within the latest news post. They're backing USC and Georgia as their favourites to win the National Championship. It's an interesting call on Georgia.

Western Michigan and Ohio should be the cream of the crop. Solich has done a fantastic job building the program in Ohio and he finally gets the majority of his players back from a successful team. 14 starters return from a 10-4 Bobcat team that literally gave away the MAC Title game last year. They get Ball St and E Michigan from the other side of the conference and get Bowling Green at home. Toughest MAC game will be M(OH) on the road. I don't see that being an issue. The best HC in the league has arguably the best player in the league in QB Tyler Tettleton. 3000yd passer and (before losses from sacks averaged in) a 900yd rusher. Dynamic. Oh, Travis Carrie is the best DB in the league too. Western Michigan looks to be the exact same thing on the other side of the conference. 14 returning starters and they avoid the supposed three best teams from the East. Their toughest MAC game is shaping up to be either Kent St or C Michigan on the road. Yeah. Alex Carder is a great QB and the best pure passer in the MAC. The Broncos have the best OL in the league and probably the most overall depth. Talent wise the rest of the conference doesn't appear to be there on paper. Northern Illinois has shown time and again they can keep stocking the cupboard but this year they might have to stretch things. They simply lose too much on offense but I won't be shocked if they manage to sneak into the West title if WM slips up. Biggest issue for NI is their depth, they lost 21 lettermen and have to go to WM. While I feel Ohio is too strong I do think Bowling Green will officially surprise people. They're my MAC watch team because they have the most starters and most lettermen back. 10 of those starters are on defense. They avoid WM and NI and get M(OH) at home. That edge on defense gives them the nod over Kent St, who themselves have 16 starters back (8 on D). The Golden Flashes have playmakers on defense but I don't see the punch on offense even with that many guys returning. That's why teams like M(OH) and Toledo are likely to stay a step ahead. Even with only 8 starters back, Toledo has a difference maker in WR Bernard Reedy. QB Zac Dysert will lead the 16 starters back for M(OH) and should be one of the better one's in the league.

So what about the rest ? Well, UMass is brand new to FBS football BUT shouldn't be that far out of their depth. Being in the MAC helps, but UMass has played a BCS conference team the last 5 years and have done pretty well against them (10pt loss to then #12 BC in '07, 4pt loss to KState in '09, 5pt loss to then #20 Michigan in '10). The majority of their team is back from what was usually a very strong FCS team. Also, good luck tackling RB Rob Blanchflower ... 6'4" 250 running at you that is. Akron gets a new HC in Terry Bowden and DC in Chuck Amato. That's pretty much all there is to be excited about for the Zips. Don't get me wrong, I love both those guys but even their coaching ability can't make talent over night. They get to play UMass though so maybe there'll be one good night. I'll expect year 3 or 4 to be decent though. Ball St ? Central Michigan ? Meh, the darlings of a few years ago have come back to MAC reality. Ball St doesn't stand a chance thanks to the scheduling ... the supposed best 3 teams from the EAST and the majority of their winnable games on the road. Yeah, I'm calling last in the West here. C Michigan's game with Toledo will determine their season. Sure they have lots of guys back but those guys just aren't the caliber of guys that C Michigan has had in recent years. The won't be terrible but I don't see them being any better than the 6th best team in the conference. Buffalo is slowly building and will be a tough out this year but the dynamic playmaker still eludes them. That's the edge that E Michigan has over the rest of, the rest of the league. QB Alex Gillet is a stud but he's a little early to the party for E Michigan. If he were there in a few years he'd be much better utilized and have more help. They're still a little ways away from really getting off the ground.

My MAC Select Team

QB - Alex Carder (W Mich)

RB - Brandon Oliver (Buffalo) Anthon Samuel (Bowling Green)

WR - Bernard Reedy (Toledo) Nick Harwell (Miami OH)

K - David Harman (C Mich)

DL - Roosevelt Nix (Kent St) Chris Jones (Bowling Green)

LB - CJ Malauulu (Kent St) Justin Cudworth (E Mich)

DB - Travis Carrie (Ohio) Rashaan Melvin (N Illinois)

P - Scott Kovanda (Ball St)

Ugh, I love the "mid" major guys but damn are they tough to call. The West is going to be a hell of a race come NOV thanks to scheduling and the EAST will be decided by who does better against the crappy teams in the conference. Talent wise, UCF and Houston stand above the conference. Even with losing the NCAA all time leading passer, their HC, and their top 3 WRs Houston still has the most talent on paper (including their first ever 5* recruit at you guessed it, WR). The Cougar's biggest help is that SMU only has 4 guys back on offense (but that Garrett Gilbert guy from UT is at QB), and Tulsa has the murder schedule this year. As always it'll be fun though. Officially I'll calle ECU and Tulane my surprise teams. It's year 3 for Ruffin McNeill at ECU and he's got 15 starters back. He should contend and now is the time to take a shot at SMiss. They get them early in the year before SMiss has a chance to gel on defense. That'll be the biggest hurdle for SMiss this year, just 4 guys back on D. That and a new HC will challenge them. They've built a solid program and a step back for them shouldn't be too far down the pecking order in CUSA, if at all. UCF has all but one of their tough games at home and should be solid enough to stand atop the East.

Marshall looks to be in no mans land this year. They get both Tulsa and Houston out of the West which makes it really hard to think they'll do more than simply be there. UTEP gets hammered by their schedule and don't have the firepower to steal too many games this year. They have to play the top 6 projected teams in CUSA (only team that has that) and I can't see them even breaking even from that. Tulane is one of my surprise teams with 14 starters back and a playmaker in RB Orleans Darkwa. They'll be much better and actually have a legitimate shot in 6 of their games this year. Memphis also looks to improve but I couldn't have 3 surprise teams, that's just cheating. I do think they won't be a laughing stock though. They get 14 guys back as well as 41 lettermen. They get a TTech transfer at QB and UMiami transfer at FS. Oh, and Rice. Yeah. Rumor has it they'll field a team as well.

My CUSA Select Team

QB - David Piland (Houston)

RB - Zach Line (SMU) Orleans Darkwa (Tulane)

WR - Justin Hardy (ECU) Darius Johnson (SMU)

K - Chris Boswell (Rice)

DL - Jaime Collins (SMiss) Derrick Jackson (Tulsa)

LB - Jeremy Grove (ECU) Trent Mackey (Tulane)

DB - Bryce Callahan (Rice) Dexter McCoil (Tulsa)

P - Ian Campbell (UTEP)

Expecting UCF to win their postseason ban appeal, or just sure that the NCAA will drag ass on it like they do everything else that doesn't involve little kids?

Honestly, the 2nd part. Kind of hard to let the season start without a final ruling, you know ... Still though, they'll win more than 6 and I don't see the decision (if against them) keeping them from their potential a la USC. I guess technically they should be "potentially" but I'm basing purely on results.

Ugh, what almost was for this conference. This year should prove to be a heck of a send off for Boise St and SDSU. Honestly, all of the top 4 teams have a legitimate shot at winning the conference. I give the nod to Fresno St has they've been on the verge of a breakout for pretty much a decade now. Pat Hill is gone as the HC but they gain Tim DeRuyter (recently turned around AF's defense before turning around A&M's defense last season). His approach should fit well with Fresno St's attitude AND he's familiar with the region/teams in the MWC from his time at AF. Can't ask for much more than that in a new HC. Fresno St also gets 14 starters back including standouts at QB in Derek Carr and RB Robbie Rouse. Both are arguably the best at their position in the conference. They do play at BST and NEV but I think having the two best players in the conference (IMO) allows them to at least split those games which should be enough to give them the MWC Title. I'm going with Nevada as a joint #1 because they have 12 guys back (6/6) and have proven that they too can roll through and replace star players. Combined with that, they get the other 3 best teams in the conference (FSU/Boise/SDSU) at home. Two star JC transfers on D should boost those 6 returning starters and really make these guys a tough out. Boise St might not have the send off to the Big East that they want. However, no matter how they finish they're going to be set up nicely for next year as plenty of young players will get on the field. That's because they've only got 7 guys back as starters, and only 2 of them are on defense. If this were on offense I'd have a higher rating for them as they just switch out seemingly on offense. Defense is another story. They catch Fresno St after a tough road game at SMiss and have to go to Nevada the last game of the year in their MWC finale. Even though they've lost leading offensive players before they've never lost the leading rusher, passer, and receiver all at once. This year they do. DJ Harper is proven at RB but Matt Miller has to replicate a FrAA season in order to lend enough support for the new QB to find his footing early. Out west Rocky Long says he may not punt a whole lot this year. Don't blame him. He's rebuilt SDSU and has Ryan Katz at QB transferred in from OrgSt. He'll be joined by highly touted transfer WR Brice Butler from USC. 12 returning starters will put up a fight but playing all 3 of the top MWC teams on the road will make it a rough time to take the title. AF/Wyoming will fight it out for the other team in the top half of the conference. I give the nod to Wyoming for two reasons. Only 6 starters back for AF (3/3) and Wyoming has Brett Smith at QB. He was only the MWFOY and 2nd team FrAA last year. He's got 11 other starters including 7 on defense back with him. AF just has to replace too much at once and the game against Wyoming is in Wyoming.

The rest of the conference features one very frustrating team (Col St), a team rebuilding (Hawaii), and two teams trying to simply find their footing so they can start to climb upwards (UNLV/NM). Colorado St is frustrating because they have plenty of talent, including All MWC RB Chris Nwoke. I'd pick them higher but 3 of their top defensive players were expelled in the spring. They do have 15 starters back despite this and will be a tough game. If their QB was among the returning players I'd have them a couple spots up. Hawaii is restructuring. Norm Chow is in as the HC but they're abandoning the 4 WR set which means they'll be in a new system without the right players for it this year. They only have 4 guys back on a defense that isn't usually very formidable as it is. Transition year for the Warriors. That leaves UNLV and NM. Of the two, NM has much more going for it. New HC Bob Davie might have been out of the game for a decade but his resume speaks for itself. He served as the LB coach and then DC for A&M in the mid 80's to early 90's before moving to DC and then HC at Notre Dame in the mid 90's to 2001. That was the last time either school was relevant on the National Stage. He inherits 14 starters, 8 of which are on offense which is his weaker side of the ball. He also gets transfers from OrgSt and A&M to help him out. UNLV will do good to win 2 games this season.

My MWC Select Team

QB - Derek Carr (FSU)

RB - Robbie Rouse (FSU) Chris Nwoke (Col St)

WR - Matt Miller (Boise St) Lamaar Thomas (NM)

K - Parker Harrington (AF)

DL - Mike Purcell (Wyoming) CJ James (Col St)

LB - Travis Brown (FSU) Jeremiah Green (NEV)

DB - Leon McFadden (SDSU) Blair Burns (Wyoming)

P - Chase Lansford (UNLV)
