the problem with using the likes of "good morning", "good afternoon" and "good evening" as a greeting lies in the fact that besides the actual execution of the greeting itself, you must have some awareness as to the time of day. in order to avoid embarassment, when you are unsure it is advisable to just use the less impressive, but safer, "hello".

I tend to also leave off the "Good" because let's face it, there's no such thing as a "Good" morning unless you're still sleeping...
