What Are The Best Cover Versions You've Heard?

My Favourite(s) would be:

The version Hallelujah (orginally recorded by Leonard Cohen) done by John Cale, I've heard almost every version of this song in existance ie. Cohen's live and studio versions (which have alternate lyrics), Bob Dylan's live version, Rufus Wainwrights "Holy Duck" version, U2's electro rock version, Jeff Buckley's (over-rated in my view) cover and some others that I can't remember the name of the preformers. I like this one because fristly the piano suits the song the best and secondly Cale just hit's it on the head with the delivery and interpretation of the song as far as I can see.

Johnny Cash's version of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's I See A Darkness. I only recently heard the orginal and I like them both but Cash (as he always did) gives the song something extra and for a man who at the time of recording had recently come out of a coma and was thought much nearer death than he was it was just perfect.

Bob Dylan's version of Johnny Cash's Train Of Love, I heard Cash's version only briefly but Dylan's just seems to have more to it. Cash's is more subdued while Dylan just turns "Ev'ry-so-often ev'rybodies baby get's the urge to roam/ev'rybodies baby but mine's comin' home" into a mournful cry which befits the song quiet well.

George Harrison's cover of If Not For You from All Things Must Pass. True to the orginal yet distictivly his own I feel.

I'll probably think of more but feel free to add.

Nirvana - Lake Of Fire (Meat Puppets cover)

Nirvana - Oh, Me (Meat Puppets cover)

White Stripes - Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover)

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (meh, you didn't like it, but :P)

A Perfect Circle - The Nurse Who Loved Me (Failure cover)

Children Of Bodom - She Is Beautiful (Andrew WK cover)

When I saw them live, Throwdown did an awesome cover of "Roots Bloody Roots" (Sepultura).

Worst Covers:

Most attempts at Depeche Mode covers......awful

Ditto The Smiths

G4's abomination of Radioheads "Creep"

All this is off the top of my head, so I could probably come up with a better list.

Marilyn Manson's cover of 'Tainted Love' is probably the only cover I like besides The Who and Rush's cover of 'Summertime Blues'.

Other than those, pretty much every other cover is utter shite

Monkey, weirdly enough, I thought MM's "Tainted Love" was awful.

But, that does remind me....MM's "Sweet Dreams" is a favourite of mine.

Thing is, the original was an absolutley shite song IMO, and his cover made it listenable to.

Puff Daddy's cover of The Police's "Every Breath You Take" was tremendous. I thought Puff Daddy and Faith Evans did a tremendous job in tributing The Notorious BIG.

Anyway...

Black Label Society - Kashmir(covering Led Zeppelin)

Razed in Black - Sin(Nine Inch Nails)

Deadsy - Tom Sawyer(Rush)

Lollipop Lust Kill - Personal Jesus(Depeche Mode)

A Perfect Circle's cover of "Love Song" by The Cure

The Postal Service's cover of "Suddenly Everything Has Changed" by The Flaming Lips

The Arrogant Sons of Bitches (local ska band) cover a bunch of Radiohead songs, all of which are awesome - "2+2=5", "Airbag", "Paranoid Android", "My Iron Lung", "Fitter Happier", and "No Surprises".

I liked Boy Sets Fire's cover of "Fade To Black" by Metallica... until they sang the wrong lyrics at the end of the song. Totally ruined what would've been a pretty cool cover.

Quite a bit of Me First and the Gimme Gimmies' songs that I've heard are pretty cool... "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", "Mandy", and "Hotel California" (especially the added horn line) to name a few.

One cover I cannot stand is Korn's cover of Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall". I didn't realize quite how much I hated it until I listened to it and then listened to the original (all 3 parts in succession), it just doesn't compare.
