Offsides is a stupid fucking rule. If teams played defense, you wouldn't need that shitty rule.

Played defense? That's exactly what defending is.

Otherwise players would just stand on the goal line, a la the fat kid at school, and it would be gay.

As long as they don't initiate contact with the goalkeeper, it should be allowed.

Thats why Americans don't like the game, it has stupid fucking rules that don't make any sense. You can't get behind the defense? Thats fucking stupid, and takes away any speed/athletic advantage the offensive team may have.

You can get behind the defense, you just can't be involved in the play. It makes perfect sense dude. McBride was involved in the play since he was blocking the keeper's vision. Without offsides there would be no game, players would just lob the ball up and down to the goal and hope their guy could get head it in.

MOST RED CARDS?

Which match holds the record for the most red cards? asks Matthew Kay. Am I right in thinking it was a game involving Sheffield United and Italian opposition in the early 1990s?

We haven't tracked down your Anglo-Italian game, Matt, but we do know that the British league record for red cards is five, which happened twice in 1997.

As Dave Ede points out, five players were sent off in the Second Division match between Chesterfield and Plymouth on February 22 1997.

"A Plymouth player was sent off for a two-footed challenge, and then four players - including Kevin Davies for Chesterfield - were sent off following a mass brawl in the final minute, instigated by Bruce Grobbelaar pretending to have been injured by the shy and retiring Darren Carr," he says. "At least that's how I saw it."

And on December 2 that year, five players were also sent off in the Bristol Rovers v Wigan Athletic - four just before half-time.

Meanwhile, Ian Battersby points out that the most red cards dished out in one game - according to the Guinness Book of Records - was an astonishing 20.

"The incident occurred in league match between Sportivo Ameliano and General Caballero in Paraguay," he says. "When two Sportivo players were sent off, a 10-minute fight ensued and the referee dismissed a further 18 players. The match, not surprisingly, was abandoned."

Its a stupid fucking rule. Outlaw cherry picking, but don't make up for the fact that the defenders don't play proper defense by having a rule that you can't be behind them and involved in a play.

Clear something up for me. If a player BEATS the last defender down the field (as in, they're both running towards the goal, and the attacker is ahead), and is passed the ball, is that offsides?

DMN, just to add, the beauty of the offside rule is it challenges a team to set out their defense cleverly and responsively and means that attackers must make intelligent runs, which can be a joy to behold. Or you could watch Nedved from earlier, who ballsed up most runs.

It does sound stupid, because it takes away any athletic advantage.

I'm not saying I agree that someone should just sit at the attacking end and get passed the ball, but if the defense isn't athletic enough to keep up with the attackers, that deficiency shouldn't be covered up by the rulebook.

Its like, in American football, if you couldn't throw the ball to a reciever who beat the corner, or in basketball if you couldn't throw an outlet to a guy ahead of the defense on a fast break. Stupid rule in that regard.
