The Sports Betting thread

Right, just a quick run-through of things...

At the moment, I've had bets from everyone apart from;

brenchill

Dirty Johnny 27

Farmer Reil

Kou

Liam Byrne

metalman

9 to 5

Now, if you're one of the above and have already posted your bets, let me know and I'll be quick to note them down. I figured this was a quicker way of doing things rather than me trawling through the whole thread.

15 on Croatia (Best value, really)

5 on Croatia 3-0

I'm going to be away for this weekend, so I give my betting duties over to Ellis for any games that I might miss. He can bet anything his little heart wants. Which means I'm fucked.

This could possibly go in Sports, but since it's not exclusive to sports I thought I'd post it here.

Basically, with Euro 2008 upon us and nobody to really support, I figure I might make things more interesting by placing a few bets. However, I've always been more of a casino type of gambler and I've only been in betting shops (bookies if you will) a couple of times, and I've never placed a bet in one. So hopefully someone can tell me how I go about doing so without making a tit of myself.

I know you can get those forms where you basically cross a few boxes, fill in your stake and (presumably) just hand that across the counter with the money. Some things you can do each way, meaning you have to pay twice your stake and only get a fraction of the odds, but it covers 1st or 2nd (or sometimes the top 4). So a £1 each way bet on, say, Italy to win the tournament means I have to pay £2, but I'll get half the odds if they come first or second.

Then there's the blank slips you can just write on, what the heck do I write on those? Stake, bet ("Italy to win Euro 2008" I assume) and... that's it? Or can I just walk up to the window and say "£5 on Portugal to win their group" and do it like that?

Lastly, there's "taking the odds" or whatever it's called. I think that's when you accept the odds at that given time, or you can just bet and you'll get the final odds before kick off. I'm really not clear on this at all.

So yeah, any help would be appreciated. Unfortunately I won't be offering to split any winnings with anyone before they ask :shifty:

Each way is 1/4 odds but pays on a top four finish, at least it does in Horse Racing, I'm not entirely sure how it relates in Football betting.

Just because I want to brag, I am the king of the Grand National, prior to this year, I'd won three in a row, and this year, my horse led over the last fence...

then faded like a bitch to finish 5th :(

I think each way on the winner is half the odds for 1st or 2nd (being in the final basically), whereas top goalscorer gives you 1/4 the odds for the top 4 finish. Atleast that's what one of those betting forms my dad leaves lying around says. I guess it depends on how many different teams/players you can bet on.

This is off topic, but kind of on topic.

I am pissed off because none of the Italian games are being played on tv in Australia this year (well free-to-air tv). Can anyone PM me a 'hook-up?'

How about I PM you a warning?

When you write out a bet on a blank slip, you write what you want how you'd say it, basically. 'Italy to win Euro 2008', or any slight variations on that work...and then you put your stake at the bottom. You can walk up and ask the person at the till to write the bet out for you, but you might as well write it out yourself, as its straightforward.

The ones with the boxes are generally the game to game betting, but they've also got the antepost (before the tournament/event, essentially) stuff for the Euros. They are pretty easy to use, and you can generally get all your bets on there.

E/W confuses a lot of people. First and foremost, its 2 bets, not 1. What you are betting on is 1 bet for the team/person to win, and another bet that they get placed in a selected set (I think in the Euro's, we only pay first 2, cos there are only 16 teams). For example, if the team you wanted were 4/1, and it was a 1/4 the odds first or second, if you put a £1 e/w, your stake would be £2, if the team win you'd get £1 at 4/1 (£5) and as they also placed, you'd get your £1 at Evens (a quarter of 4/1), so you'd be taking back £7. If they just placed, you'd only pick up the second part of the bet.

Hopefully, that makes sense.

As for prices, generally on football bets, you get the price when the bet is struck. Football prices rarely move, and if they do, it'd be unfair to penalise those who have already had thier bets at a better price. The same thing goes for Antepost bets.

One of the more important things to remember about better on football in major tournaments is that all first scorer, scorecast and correct score bets are just for 90 minute betting, and don't include if the game goes to extra time. A perfect example of that was Chelsea vs Tottenham at the League Cup...the game ended 2-1 Spurs, but we'd have only paid out on the draw, 1-1 correct score and Drogba to score 1st and 1-1, as that was the score when the game 'finished'. Unless someone only backed Spurs to win the cup, in which case they naturally get paid out also.
