- The always controversial Tito Ortiz will be apart of "Anytown Throwdown" for the G4 network. It's apparently a show in which Ortiz trains people who want to settle their differences in the cage. Ortiz will train them to fight, and the show will go all over the US. Source: MMAjunkie

-Kevin Randleman has sign a contract with World Victory Road and will be fighting on May 18th. Randleman is then slated to headline a Global Fighting Championship show against Jeff Monson. Pretty impressive considering that Randleman had a brutal staff infection that could've killed him if he didn't get treatment. Source: MMA Mania

-The June 1st show for WEC just got bigger, as two titles will be defended. Paulo Fihlo will defend his WEC Middlewight Championship against Chael Sonnen, originally scheduled for March. Fihlo claimed that he suffured from depression when the match was made, and would not be up for training for the fight. Fihlo and Sonnen met in a controversial bout that saw Fihlo defeat Sonnen with an armbar after the ref thought that Sonnen had verbally submitted. The event will be most likely headlined by a 145-pound title fight between Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver. Source: MMA Mania

-The first YAMMA Pit Fighting show will take place on April 11th at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J. The event will occur on April 11th and willbe aired on PPV at 10:00 and cost $34.95. The event will have an eight-man Heavyweight tournament and two "Masters Superfights" between Don Frye/Oleg Taktarov and Gary Goodridge/Eric "Butterbean" Esch. The company is owned by Bob Meyrowitz, the man who created the UFC. Source: MMAjunkie

If you can ever find it at a good price, I strongly recommend that any MMA fan pick up the Bas Rutten career DVD. Three discs of his Pancrase fights with highlights of his UFC fights, and the commentary by Bas is excellent. It sucks that most new MMA fans never got to see Bas fight in his prime.

Report: Rashad Evans and Chuck Liddell to Headline UFC 85

by Dann Stupp [mmajunkie] on Mar 06, 2008 at 8:26 am

Rashad Evans (11-0-1 MMA, 6-0-1 UFC) will fill in for an injured Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and will fight Chuck Liddell (21-5 MMA, 16-4 UFC) in the main event of UFC 85.

The news was first reported by MMAWeekly.com. The UFC has yet to announce the bout, and MMAjunkie.com has left a message with Evans' camp to confirm the report.

UFC 85 takes place June 7 at the 02 Arena in London, England.

Filho is still defending the title this month as scheduled says his manager.

Also, Strikeforce has found Gilbert Melendez an opponent for his next title defense for the March 29 EliteXC/Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Cung Le Showtime show. It will be Chute Boxe jiu-jitsu coach Cristiano Marcello. I know nothing about him. So, EBG, is this going to be a good fight?

ESPN “The Magazine” of all places is running a report that Fedor Emelianenko — considered among many as the top heavyweight fighter in mixed martial arts — will be a free agent again within the next week and will entertain offers from the UFC.

Here’s a snip from the Russian’s long-time manager, Apy Echteld:

“Officially, yes, Fedor will be a free agent…. We’re open to a discussion [with UFC]. If everybody is willing to put a little wine in the water, then we have something to work with. There is space for this to happen.”

Emelianenko opted to sign with the newly-formed M-1 promotion in late 2007 instead of competing inside the Octagon. That decision prompted UFC Heavyweight Champion, Randy Couture, to fax in his resignation from a South African movie set.

“The Natural” indicated — and still does — that the only fighter left to prove himself against is the Pride FC heavyweight champion. He’s currently in the midst of an intense legal battle with the UFC about his decision and actions ever since.

Here’s a snip from UFC President Dana White:

“People think he’s the best — I don’t, not even close. But if it’s somehow possible, I would make it happen…. I like Randy, I genuinely like to think he’s a good guy. As much as we’ve gone back and forth on this, I would sign Fedor and do everything possible to get Randy in the Octagon with him. I’d do anything, because a., it’s a great fight and b., I think Randy would smash Fedor.”

M-1 has yet to stage a show and there’s talk that infighting between the Russian side of the operation and the American side has hindered its progress. Emelianenko, however, was loaned out to fight Hong Man Choi at the Yarennoka! Japan event this past New Year’s Eve, winning via submission (armbar) in round one.

This is the latest bizarre development in perhaps the most bizarre MMA storyline of all time. The storybook ending, after all that has transpired, would be a showdown between Couture and Emelianenko under the UFC banner.

But can the fight, if it ever happens, even come close to living up to the lofty expectations?

We may never know … or will we? There’s apparently no end in sight for this rollercoaster ride. Or is there?

Anything seems possible at this point.

So, I've got a question based on a conversation I was having with Biggzay. Should Fedor-Couture end up getting signed for UFC, it's arguably the most anticipated fight ever. I can agree with that, but I don't think it'll break buyrate records just because neither man is big amongst casual fans. Not to mention the lackluster performances of other Pride stars lately, I'm sure a casual fan would be more hesitant to buy into the hype machine for Fedor.

So yea, I'm bored and I'm curious what some of you think.

I honestly think if this fight happened in the UFC, it would draw huge numbers. I'm going to go out and say that if a deal materializes, and this fight gets the pimping it deserves, you'd be surprised at the results. I don't know how you can say Randy isn't popular amongst casual fans. He's not the most popular, but he is easily one of the most well known, even amongst casual fans. IIRC, last year UFC 68 with the Randy vs. Sylvia main event was only out drawn by UFC 67 (Jackson vs. Liddell) and UFC 79 (Liddell vs. Silva/GSP vs. Hughes). UFC 74 with Couture vs. Gonzaga got better PPV numbers than UFC 76 too, which had Liddell vs. Jardine and Shogun vs. Forrest. You market this as champion vs. champion, the two top heavyweights in the World, with Randy's name value, the hyping of Fedor being the unbeatable champion from the East, the biggest fight ever, the hardcore fans will watch regardless, and the casual fans shouldn't be that hard to convince to buy it.

I could agree with that.

To MMA fans, Fedor and Couture are two of the biggest names in the sport, but to a more casual fan, they might not even know who Fedor is. Couture, sure given the main stream exposure he's been getting, but I still think fighters like Chuck or Tito are more well known amongst casual fans.

Rampage is going to be the new Nike commercial with a bunch of other sports stars, that should work out nicely for him. I wouldn't say he is bigger than Chuck or even Tito (EDIT: At first I though you said he was a bigger name than Tito AND Chuck, my bad). Tito was one guy that everybody knew before UFC hit it big and he is still one of the most well-known, bankable stars in MMA. He's got tremendous name value, despite mixed feeling about him personally and professionally.

Right now, Chuck is still the poster boy for the UFC. He has fallen from grace a bit, lost his belt, but I'd say even with the loss the Page, he is still a level above him in terms of popularity. More people relate Chucky to UFC or UFC to Chuck or whatever more than anybody else. Rampage's popularity is growing fast and it will continue to grow as he enjoys more success, but I'd say at this very moment, he's a step below Tito and Chuck in terms of popularity.
