Surely that means QPR will have to pay Barton the remaining 3 years of his contract? Unless they two parties have come to some sort of mutual agrrement I supoose.

It depends if they mean they're releasing him or they're willing to let someone sign him for free, the former they're going to have to agree a deal with him, the latter will depend how much is someone willing to pay him per week - they may have to continue to pay part of his wage.
