I've mellowed out in the last couple years. There's probably loads of stuff that I'd have wanted in my top 15 that I'm drawing a blank on but hey, this is pretty much based purely on my last.fm.

Also I totally think we should use YI's scoring method, it just makes way more sense as far as getting a collective best band result.

Like say one person votes, I dunno, Peter Frampton at number one, that's fifteen points under regular scoring system. Then three people all vote, fuck it, Enya in twelth place which'd be 12 points. But the fact more people on EWB like Enya enough to vote for her (seriously guys, Enya? You guys like some shit music) surely means she should place higher in the list than ol' Frampy?

I dunno, I just really dug YI's scoring method.

Only reason I'm not doing it is because it helps encourage strategic voting.

"Well Enya's okay but I totally want her on the list instead of Big Daddy Kane so I'll vote her 15th so that 6th that she was voted by Cloudy gets multiplied."

We can discuss changing the scoring method though, I'm open to a good argument for why YI's method should be used. I don't have feelings either way beyond my above statement.

I narrowed this down to a shortlist of twenty-five, and from there it was really tough, but in the end I had to say goodbye to The Cribs, Marina & the Diamonds, Belle & Sebastian, The Kinks, Paul Simon, Josh Rouse, Bob Marley, The Divine Comedy, The Beach Boys, Beach House, Charlie Mingus and The Pogues. So too bad for them. Best of luck in the future guys.

Final fifteen is as follows:

1. Chic

2. David Bowie

3. Steely Dan

4. Prince

5. Hank Williams

6. Lady Gaga

7. The Byrds

8. James Taylor

9. Miles Davis

10. Bob Dylan

11. The Rolling Stones

12. Ryan Adams

13. Neil Young

14. Scott Walker

15. The Smiths

and last year's is similar but different:

1. Ryan Adams

2. The Beatles

3. David Bowie

4. The Smiths

5. Belle & Sebastian

6. Bob Dylan

7. James Taylor

8. Josh Rouse

9. Miles Davis

10. Neil Young

11. Janelle Monáe

12. The Rolling Stones

13. Steely Dan

14. Outkast

15. Frightened Rabbit

1. The Black Keys

2. Arcade Fire

3. Nine Inch Nails

4. Queens of the Stone Age

5. The Black Angels

6. The Antlers

7. UNKLE

8. Childish Gambino

9. Bon Iver

10. Beach House

11. The Glitch Mob

12. The National

13. Porcelain Raft

14. Youth Lagoon

15. Led Zeppelin

Last year's list:

1. Nine Inch Nails

2. Queens of the Stone Age

3. Arcade Fire

4. The Black Angels

5. Childish Gambino

6. The Black Keys

7. Mastodon

8. UNKLE

9. The Glitch Mob

10. Led Zeppelin

11. Bon Iver

12. Interpol

13. The National

14. The Antlers

15. Gnarls Barkley

Overall a fair amount of shuffling but nothing really drastic other than Mastodon not being on the list at all after being fairly high last year. I will say that my interest in listening to stuff I already have has waned quite a bit lately so the latter half of the list contains a lot of bands that I happen to be into at the moment (or within the last year, at least).

I think the best example of why YI's system works is Nine Inch Nails last year. Under the system you're employing (which GoGo used) they came 10th because 4 people gave them 15 points, under YI's system they came joint 21st because no-one else gave them a single vote. I believe there were 55 voters last year, 4 of them voted for Nine Inch Nails but they got in the top 10, despite the fact that only 4 people considered them to be in their top 15 bands. The system you're using is favourable to niche bands that a handful of people love as opposed to bands that a lot of people like but don't consider their favourite band. In theory 4 people could say that some obscure band-of-the-month are their favourite band and that then ranks them higher than a band that 59 people rank as their 15th favourite band. Obviously that's an extreme scenario that would never happen, but it doesn't seem right to me.
