Pele has died

Growing up his name was the first (only?) name most Americans knew when it came to soccer. Learning about him and how truly incredible of a player he was as I learned about the sport and played it as a kid gave me a bit of a baseline against which to compare everything. I've always thought of him as the greatest ever, in a similar way to Michael Jordan or Babe Ruth. Everyone else is forever just chasing being second best.

Biggest legend in the history of the game. Many come close but I don’t think anybody will ever knock him off his perch as the greatest player of all time.

It’s a shame that I was born too late to truly experience his career.

I tend to steer clear of comparisons between players from different generations, but Pele was arguably the first global star in the television era. His influence on the game is almost unrivalled.

It's difficult to compare eras in sports because the games evolve so much, as has the development and training of those who are playing.  But the guy averaged nearly a goal per game throughout his career.  That is just truly absurd for any era - he was on another stratosphere from his contemporaries.

I’m back with my parents for Christmas so can’t get an immediate reaction from my Brazilian flatmate for this one but I’ve asked her for a comment and I expect she will say that it was Croatia’s overly negative football that killed him.

I still have Pele's Soccer for the Atari 2600, was a fun, though obviously limited, game for its time. Needless to say his name was synonymous with soccer, there will never be another like him. RIP Pele.

I did not care about Soccer in the slightest when I was younger but I knew who Pele was. Guy was the biggest star in his sport and maybe all sports there for a while

Same - he was the first name in soccer I remember as a kid

Sad to hear. One of the sport's greatest of his generation. Shame I never experienced his greatness. Have seen a lot of his goals and always enjoyed the way he played. 

Also let us not forget his best goal.

It's one of them it's a shame he played when he did. He's universally revered as the greatest but was before all of our times pretty much. 

Maradona was the one people may have seen but Pele is always up there in the conversation as the greatest.
