What I do is something along the following.

Hold R1 to block the face. As I mash the face buttons. As I furiously twist the right stick. Seems to somewhat work as I survived being rocked 3 times to be finally KO'd straight up in the 3rd the other day.

I just got the game yesterday and I've already finished a career (technically I retired). Kickboxing and Judo. 25-11 was my record, and 24 of my wins were by KO/TKO. Kickboxing is hell of a lot of fun, to me anyways. I didn't really use Judo much, I was more focused on kicking my opponent in the head and knocking them out. I ended my career going into the 7th year after I lost for the 4th time to Evans for the Light Heavyweight title. I beat him the 1st time we fought, got the belt, and then in his rematch and ever since, he smoked me. So I just retired and said "fuck it!"

Sooo yeah, this game is awesome. A couple of flaws, like clunky menus and the random KO's but other than that it is good. Great for the UFC's first real attempt to a good video game.

Which styles do you all think go together? I love Kickboxing, but I haven't really found which other style fits me best.

Whenever I try that(or the equivalent, since I'm on 360 instead of PS3), it never works. The other person still just stands on top of me and hits me in the face, and my guy doesn't even try to block it or get up.

I prefer Muay Thai in striking. The Muay Thai Clinch can be devastating. On the ground, I like Jiu Jitsu. No fancy clinch slams or anything, but be able to submit people or use the rubber guard while defending on the ground pushes it ahead of wrestling and judo.

I like boxing, especially when making someone in a career, you can focus on your standing strikes instead of splitting them with kicks. For grappling, I prefer wrestling, but I'm currently learning BJJ. With wrestling it's just REALLY easy to mount, and after that I can win the fight within 15 seconds most of the time.

Boxing is good for a career, especially if you are making a ground specialist so you can ignore the kicks, as you said. I just think Muay Thai is the most rewarding when you level all the way up.

I love kickboxing once you use the dash punches to your advantage, as they're the only real power punches you get besides the superman punch.

EDIT: And obviously cause you get some nasty kicks.

EDIT 2: Speaking of nasty kicks, just KOed someone's CAF at 4:58 into the first round with a swift headkick after being knocked down myself about a minute earlier. He had stats at 115 too.

Kickboxing and wrestling for the win.

They're not really 'random' and I wouldn't consider it a flaw of the game. The flash KO's come when someone catches their opponent off guard, for example landing a big strike when the other person is about to do the same.

Doesn't work for me either. I can block but it doesn't do anything to keep the fight going.

It's got me out of it sometimes, although I don't mash the buttons, I hold LB and push the RS up and down. It doesn't guarantee to get you out, but doing that has actually somehow saved me about four or five times in online fights, so I always do it now.

Wrestling and Boxing is probably my favourite, but I'm currently going through Muay Thai and BJJ right now, which is pretty awesome too. Getting the hand of Muay Thai is pretty awesome I've found. BJJ is pretty good, although I certainly prefer the wrestling part I'd say, maybe that's just because my career guy is still low on stats and hasn't started to shine with it yet.

Gray Maynard is a fucking bitch to beat. Took me right until the end of the third round to beat him, where I finally took him out with a sweeping jab to the head. Probably the toughest I've fought so far at Lightweight, he was damn awesome on the ground for some reason. Just took on BJ Penn as well, beat him with 8 seconds left in the final round with a head kick (which I'd only just learned, fantastic to have them). Now the number one contender and got to go against Kenny Florian, who I think might destroy me.

Honestly, if you're struggling on the ground so much, you really need to practise more, it's that simple. It's not easy to get the hang of it straight away for some people, it took me a while at first, but once you get into your stride then you realise it's not actually too hard. As people have said many times, just don't panic, otherwise you'll screw yourself. If they mount you, the best thing to do is block. Keep it there until they start firing for a combo or something and then look to reverse it. Don't go crazy and try to reverse it non stop, otherwise your stamina will drain away within an instance.

Been going through my Lightweight career a little today and lost my first fight against Florian for the title in my first challenge for it. Went to the fifth round and he killed me with a head kick, gutted but very happy with the fight. Still annoyed that a classic back and fourth five round fight isn't classed as fight of the night, yet seemingly a first round KO is. In my Welterweight career though, I could only get my wrestling and boxing up to level 3. In this career it's allowing me to go passed level 3 for Muay Thai, which surprised me, just working on level 4 now, is that the highest level? I'm still level 2 for BJJ, does that only go to 3? I came back from the loss anyway with a victory over Sean Sherk and then beat BJ Penn for the title via TKO, which he claimed was pathetic and the official stopped it early, ha.

Yes level 4 is the highest you can get your striking and grappling skills. I personally never went over 3 for either.

I think I'm going to mix it up a little and try Boxing/Wrestling or Boxing/Judo in career since once I get BJJ to level 2 its basically over for my opponents.

Started training and done with tutorials, started playing the CPU, I find it next to impossible to successfully lock in a submission :(

I played one online match, killed the guy with the Superman Punch in 36 seconds, sweet :D

You really have to work the opponent over first. Throw a lot of leg kicks and body shots. By the third round, you should be getting side control or full mount and going for submissions. It is next to impossible to get them right away.
