Super Dan Petrescu!

Word is Chelsea will make a statement about the next manager later today, but I'd put fairly short odds on it being "We're working on it as fast as we can, in the meantime Eddie Newton/whoever will be in charge."

Danny Simpson, player-manager?

Steady now. Roman may be wealthy but even he can't match Danny Simpson's worth.

Apparently, Tulisa is a Liverpool fan, so we're flogging him to them for £47,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

You mean managers with established reputations would baulk at getting 2 years pay for 6 months' work, knowing that they'd still have the reputation to walk into most jobs afterwards regardless?

Yes, it truly is a conundrum why they keep signing up...

If Chelsea keeps sacking managers in this manner wouldn't you think the marquee names would stay away?

A few mil in the bank for 12 months of work?

Then go back to Italy or wherever where they couldn't care less about your ridiculous sacking in England.

Everyone's saying that it's going to be Benitez. You can argue his merits as a manager but that would be missing the point. What is football fandom...when it's done right...if not heart-over-head tribalism? Chelsea fans can't stand him and no pointing towards his time at Valencia or some of his Liverpool reign (whilst ignoring the end of his Liverpool reign and his time at Inter, naturally) is going to change that.

And if we start getting great results? I can imagine the hatred quietening down...but I can't imagine him being accepted. Particularly if he's got "to be gone in the summer" on his contract from Day One.

If this leads to the league being more open, with more conetention for 3rd and 4th like last year, I'm all for it. Though it'd be a shame, because a 3-way race for the title could be quite fun. They've got a lot of talent in that squad, so I'm sure whoever they appoint will get some very good results, but I'd almost like to see the next manager not fair so well, just so Abramovich might consider stopping swapping managers around. Because for all the fault of it, Chelsea still seem to win something or finish well every year. Even last year they managed to get away with it by winning the CL.

I feel for you though, Stok. Haven't seen one Chelsea fan happy with this.

Benitez's last season at Liverpool owes a lot to the position Liverpool was in from an ownership standpoint at the time.

Benitez over achieved in his first season with us and probably over achieved under Hicks and Gillette who didn't want him, didn't really give him money and forced him to sell to buy.

BENITEZ APPOINTED

Posted on: Wed 21 Nov 2012

Chelsea Football Club can confirm Rafael Benitez has been appointed interim first-team manager until the end of the season.

The owner and the Board believe that in Benitez we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives.

The 52-year-old Spaniard is due to meet the players at the training ground in Cobham tomorrow.

The two-time UEFA Manager of the Year comes with outstanding pedigree. He began his managerial career in his homeland, most notably at Valencia where he built a reputation as one of Europe's top coaches by winning the Spanish League twice and the UEFA Cup. He then spent six years at Liverpool and led them to their fifth European Cup and an FA Cup.
