The PS4 thread

9 to 5

Recommended Posts

I played a bit last night and I've got to echo how stunning the visuals are and I'm really interested by the game world and I'm looking forward to learning more about the back story about why things are like they are in the game.

I'm really enjoying the combat system on the game as well. I didn't do much of the main story as I did a few side quests but they've been enjoyable.

I take it it's still visually great if you're a poor person like me who has to make do with a 40 inch 1080p Samsung tv and a standard PS4, and not a 4K one + PS4 Pro?

Somebody with the game should make a thread for it. Interested to read people's thoughts on it here and there seems like enough of you have got/are getting it.

The most first world problem I have seen in a long while. :P

Yes. I have a PC with a great graphics card and a standard PS4 (both hooked up to a 65" 4K TV). I honestly can't think of a game that's 'prettier'. Like I'm sure there are games with better graphics on a texture level, but how it actually looks is flawless and breathtaking (although it is only 30FPS which is kind of cheating).

I'm kind of the opposite to how most people seem to be feeling about it. I haven't made it through the end of the 'tutorial section' yet so it's way too early to judge properly. The story is fine but I'm not so big on how similar it has felt to other games mechanics wise: 'here's your Arkham Asylum scan the area for clues thing' 'hide from stuff in the long grass and sneak past without getting detected' 'craft stuff like it's Far Cry'. Plus I'm never a massive fan of 'here's 10 minutes of talking, you can now play for 5 minutes before 10 more minutes of talking' which I'm hoping changes soon.

I was such a fool. It's so, so good. It's reminding me a lot of Skyrim world but with Witcher level stories and more enjoyable gameplay than both. Although the bow is a bit weird since there seems to be no drop on your shots. Once everyone shut up for a bit and just let me play it got really good, really fast.

I've only played a couple hours or so, up until the end of the first mission where you...

hunt a Sawtooth

...but it's good. It's really good. Like I'm getting the same vibes as I did from the likes of Bloodborne and Last of Us. This is going to be a really special game with a lot if water cooler moments that I think we'll be talking about for a long time.

Decided to use some of the amazon credit I got for my birthday on this, was excited to get the Prime discount, but it was currently out of stock.  Caved and got the digital version.  I am not very far, that tutorial section was way too long, but I'm having fun with it so far.  Feels a bit like the new Tomb Raider games, which is definitely a good thing.

I am loving Horizon Zero Dawn. The only thing I could moan about (besides the first hour or so) is I really, really fucking hate random loot drops. I need a piece of a machine to trade to a vendor for a new outfit, I have now killed the same machine about 15 times hoping it would drop what I need. I had the same issue with animals when I was trying to increase my carry ability. I don't get how you could need to kill 30 foxes to get a fox bone or skin, I'm pretty sure they all have bones and skin.

Anyone else have an issue with the Horizon disc making the system go into overdrive? I popped it in and the fans and disc drive went into overdrive which is what you'd expect really for the most part while the game installs.. but it never really stopped. The whole time the disc is in the system whether the game is being played or not, the damn thing sounds like a jet engine taking off.

Man, some of the machines frighten the hell out of me. I play the game with my headphones on and I swear the scrappers and sawtooths always sound like they are right next to me and not several feet away. Also, I'm pretty I've already taken about 50 screenshots, this game is so beautiful.

It might be because the directional sound is really, really bad. I have surround and also nice headphones, this is the first game I've played in forever where you can't instantly tell where shit is through noise alone. For a company that specialised in FPS it's a bit baffling that this was the thing they totally shit the bed on.

Normally it isn't that big a deal, but early on in the game there's an NPC that calls for help (and I didn't realise yet about the green exclamation mark on the radar), I spent 10 minutes running around in circles because I couldn't tell where they were based on their cries.

I am loving Horizon Zero Dawn....but man, the Bellowbacks are kicking my ass. And they are starting to show up far too often...I actually had to look up the best way to take them down :shifty:

Also! Some of the hunting trials are hard! Just got to the second one where I can do the shock trial and frost trial. I spent all my money, so I may need to come back to this one.

I felt as though I had a handle on what it was doing (albeit not why)... Then at 7:14 the lion randomly grew in size and the whole thing came off the rails. Next thing you know, we're following a violin around a giant frog in outer space.
