Rugby World Cup 2015

I didn't think the Northern hemisphere were in great shape going in to it and looking like I was right so far. Ireland getting back into at least, I still expect them to turn it round but not making things easy for themselves. As a side note it's good to see how Argentina have progressed in a relatively short period of time.

South Africa’s 1995 World Cup-winning team have invited Londoners to join them on a two-mile jog before Saturday’s Rugby World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in a bid to replicate their success from 20 years ago.

The Springboks face the All Blacks at Twickenham in a repeat of the final at Ellis Park, with New Zealand once again heavy favourites to book their place in next week’s final. But in an attempt to recreate the feelgood factor which surrounded the famous victory, the 1995 captain Francois Pienaar and the rest of his team-mates will take to the streets of central London hours before kick off.

“On the morning of the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final, they famously ran in Sandton. Twenty years later, the world champion Springboks are running again ... through the streets of London,” read a statement from South African Rugby.

“All are welcome to join the 1995 Springboks squad and jog for two miles from Trafalgar Square and back. Meet outside the National Gallery at 07h30 on Saturday 24 October, 2015.”

After upsetting the odds against Jonah Lomu and co thanks to Joel Stransky’s drop kick in extra time, Pienaar was handed the trophy by Nelson Mandela less than a year after he had been elected as South Africa’s first black president. The story featured in John Carlin’s book Playing the Enemy, which was later transformed into the feature film Invictus starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.

The national airlines of Australia and New Zealand have agreed a wager on the outcome of the Rugby World Cup final.

Air New Zealand and Qantas shook on the agreement following a humorous exchange on Twitter.

Qantas crew will have to wear New Zealand rugby jerseys on Monday if the All Blacks win. Air NZ pilots, however, will have to announce Australia's win.

It followed an earlier suggestion that the losing airline repaint their fleet in the opposition colours.

Air New Zealand began the exchange on Twitter by sending the Australian airline a digitally altered photo of a Qantas passenger plane painted completely black, with slogans including "team All Blacks" "bound in black" and "simply the best".

"We've been thinking about this wager. How about you paint your planes like this?" the airline said.

Qantas responded with their own image of an Air New Zealand plane in bright Australian gold, saying they "think it needs a golden touch".

Air New Zealand responded: "We wouldn't want to slow our planes down … with all that extra paint", to which Qantas quipped: "We wouldn't think you'd be in a hurry to get here when you lose."

Qantas planes usually fly in a white-and-red colour scheme, while Air New Zealand usually fly white aircraft with a black tail.

The exchange was well-received by rugby fans and Twitter followers, prompting both sides to suggest the more realistic wager on the outcome.

"How about this? On Monday in the air, your crew wear our jerseys," Air New Zealand suggested earlier today.

"It's on! But let's not leave the pilots out!" Qantas agreed.

Both companies then agreed to "take this offline" to formalise the bet.

Neither have said if they are still considering repainting their entire fleet by Monday.

The team who won the past two world cups have the rule. If players wish to play for England they know the rules, I know it's a choice of earning more money in France or playing for your country, but players in England aren't exactly underpaid.

The team who came second in this world cup got rid of the rule in the run up to it. No-one is getting close to this New Zealand team any time soon but we could and should be picking our best possible players at all times. It makes no sense that seemingly we're going to be picking a coach who isn't from England but will exclude players who don't play in England.
