EWB Band 100 III Results

It's a fair representation of what EWB is into right now. I just find it kinda funny cause it happens every year with a few obscure bands getting votes and making it into the bottom of the list over Depeche Mode, the Ramones, etc. Like I said, I find it more amusing than anything because it's pretty ridiculous.

For all of those people saying "who?" to The Dears...

They're a Canadian, IIRC, indie group with a Morrissey-esque outlook on life, love, and the world, with a kind of Radiohead meets Nick Drake by way of early 90s Blur sound, I'd say.

They've come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and their album No Cities Left from 2004 is a really good listen. It's easy to categorise as 'dreary indie' I suppose, but there are some really euphoric moments and the musicianship is very good, and the songwriter/singer Murray Lightburn has quite a nice voice. It's expressive and tortured without sounding whiny, IMO.

I do quite like 'em, but they're not top 10 in my book so I didn't vote for them. Being near the bottom of a top 100 list is probably more than fair for them, however.

Why the Trivium hate?

Because they're dull, commercialised metal-by-numbers, with a horrible vocalist, awful songs, and nothing at all appealing about them? That's probably got something to do with it.

As for the ongoing argument in the thread...popular doesn't always mean good, that's one way to look at it, so it's people's favourite bands they're voting for, hence why the occassional oddity like Devin Townsend might make its way up there at the expense of others. Hell, my number one was The Lucksmiths, who barely anyone's heard of, but they're my favourite band. Secondly, people tend not to put too much thought in this kind of thing. They're not going to sit back and genuinely work out who their "favourite" bands are, they'll just list the ten bands they're listening to most at the moment. Thirdly, who gives a fuck?

I think people are assuming that Zero is completely referring to bands from the UK. I think he understands that UK bands will make it due to the large contingent of UK music fans. I think he's just saying that regardless of the bands region, we still manage to get some well known bands knocked off in favor of bands that have gained more popularity recently, as in flavors of the month.

I was taking your point in, but then I realised you barely like anything that's sold more than ten records. Just because a band isn't necessarily innovative, doesn't mean people can't enjoy what they do. Hell people love Oasis to death and they've just released the same dreary bullshit over and over for the past ten years.

Is there any justification for that? I've been listening primarily to Gnarls Barkley for the past couple of weeks, I'm a huge Alex Parks fan, The Beautiful South are one of my all-time favourite bands, I could go on and on and on. I like plenty of bands that have "sold more than ten records", and plenty of bands that aren't innovative, but I just can't stand Trivium (or Oasis, for that matter).

There's a difference between not being innovative, and being derivative.

Top 100 doesn't mean they have to be well-known, either. Somebody has to think they're a good band, and that's it.

Exactly, which is why I don't see why anyone's getting bent out of shape when I call it a band an EWB Flavor of the Month. It's a band that a few people around here lare into at the moment and put them up at the top of their list. Happens every year, but when someone points it out, people get all pissy.

Though I do get what Zero is trying to say, but I also agree with Intent in regards to how I just don't see Hundred Reasons as a flavour of the month band. I get that people at the end of their top ten will tend to add in bands that they are more recently into, but that doesn't detract from the fact that as far as we know, next year Hundred Reasons may get placing again rather than just be on there because they have had a few people recently get into them, or whatever.

There are bands off the list that should possibly be ahead of Hundred Reasons, but "established bands" don't always get the votes in these things, either cos people take it for granted they might get in, or because as with some of the other bands, they go in and out of fashion and can almost be branded as "flavour of the month" as others. I love Depeche Mode, but it was interesting that they got a placing in a year where they toured and released an album.

Oh, and Dragsy...since when does liking underground music (like Skummy) detract from his ability to have an opinion on Trivium? To some extent, I agree with aspects of what he says, and I also feel that Trivium are lucky to be pedalling a half decent sound during a time when I personally think that "commercial" metal is in a poor state. If there were better bands around, Trivium wouldn't get the attention IMO.

This is the problem I have with Jook's breaking-up of the list. I don't mind if he breaks it up, but if he's going to do it in blocks on ten, the maximum length I'd be content to wait during updates is a day. We've exceeded a day now, meaning we'll more than likely have to wait for over ten days to see the finish, and that's just ridiculous. Break it up, fine, but if you have to keep us waiting, keep us waiting for a day and no more.

Is it THAT important for us to see the list?

It's a matter of life and death.
