Paulo Filho in the US! Smell the buyrates!

Filho, phenomenal technician, world class grappler... Human slug of MMA.

Never been a fan of Filho, I can appreciate his talent for the sport, but man, he can suck the life out of an event. No doubt his name adds a lot of credibility to the 185 pound division, but he is so fucking boring to watch, unless he finishes early with a sub.

Besides, what would it say about Pride purchase if UFC signed the arguable #1 contender of the Pride welterweight title?

Tommy Morrison wants UFC champ Liddell

Mark Vester / BoxingScene.com

Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison is ready to make his debut in mixed martial arts, with a goal in mind of eventually landing a fight with UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck "Iceman" Liddell, according to the Arizona Republic.

Morrison (48-3, 42KOs), who recently resumed his boxing career after testing positive for HIV 11 years ago in Las Vegas, has a scheduled bout against 340-pound mixed martial artist John Stover. The bout is scheduled to take place on June 9 at the Cliff Castle Casino in Arizona and will be promoted by Worldwide Fighting Championship.

Following his positive test for HIV, Morrison was medically banned from boxing. In the last few years, he told anyone that would listen that he was given a false-positive HIV result in 1996.

On at least five occasions since December 2006, Morrison has tested negative for the HIV virus. After the head of the Arizona State Boxing Commission personally watched Morrison take a blood test at a lab in Phoenix, and the test came back negative for HIV, Morrison was licensed to return Feb. 20, where he knocked out John Castle (4-2, 2 KOs) in the second round of a scheduled four round contest.

A second comeback bout was scrapped after medical documents were not received in time by the governing athletic board. Morrison did not look great in his bout with Castle and appeared to be tired by the second round. There has been no word on who Morrison is training with in order to properly prepare himself for his MMA debut.

According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, Hong-Man Choi – scheduled to face Brock Lesnar in the main event of the troubled Dynamite! USA event next week – has been denied a license by the California State Athletic Commission on medical grounds. Iole confirmed the information with FEG USA’s Mike Kogan. FEG is one of the co-promoters of the event.

Kogan is attempting to seek a favorable opinion from a second doctor and seemed surprised that Choi was not able to gain clearance initially. Saying to Iole, “I think he can fight, because he fought (in a kickboxing show) in Hawaii on April 28 and he's all right. But if the second doctor comes to the same conclusion as the first, I have to deal with it."

In addition to the troubles with Choi, at the time of publication, FEG has still not been able to secure a promoter’s license in California. They submitted financial documents to the commission yesterday, but those documents were deemed insufficient.

A representative of the athletic commission was unavailable for comment at the time of publication of this article.

Choi Hong-man update

by Dave Meltzer

While there has been no official announcement by the California State Athletic Commission regarding the status of Choi Hong-man for the June 2nd match with Brock Lesnar, it is highly unlikely the match will take place.

An announcement is expected imminently but the medical condition discovered in his pre-fight physical requires immediate attention that would make it impossible for a commission to allow him to fight ten days.

It is believed FEG is searching for a new opponent for Lesnar, which also won't be easy, because they are unlikely to approve of Lesnar facing anyone who has had too many fights since it is Lesnar's debut.

I wonder if they will get anyone in time?

We have been able to confirm that preliminary talks have started with FEG regarding potential new opponents for Brock Lesnar.

We know of four names that are definitely under consideration, which are Tank Abbott, Ruben Villareal, Butterbean and James Thompson.

Of those names, Abbott or Butterbean would have the most marquee value as a freak show fight for the U.S. PPV audience. Thompson is a question mark because even his own management can't ascertain what his Pride deal would prevent him from doing so he may be impossible. He also isn't likely to be chosen. Abbott has verbally said he would do the fight if asked.

Not seen it reported here, but UFC 75 is almost certain to take place at London's O2 Arena on September 8th. Michael Bisping will be fighting, with some of the rumours putting him up against Matt Hamill or Lyoto Machida; Jesse Liaudin will be on the card; and the main event looking likely to be Cro Cop vs Arlovski. If it is, I'm there.

Just letting you know, ticket prices for UFC events are staggering at best.

I don't like Bisping's chances in either bout. While he can beat Hammill, the wrestling ability is just far superior and Matt has shown that he'll simply hold you there. And during the show you saw how easily he did against Bisping, including stuffing a takedown without hands. So I'm not sure if they want that... and Machida would be ok, but again, don't know. If anything I'd say Lyoto would be my preference as a booker.

Sources: PRIDE Acquisition Finalized

by Josh Gross (joshg@sherdog.com)

On March 27, Station Casinos Vice Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC President Dana White announced in a Tokyo press conference that the sale of the PRIDE Fighting Championships to Zuffa had been agreed upon, and that the deal would be consummated on May 1.

Yet three weeks after the consummation date, the deal was slow to close, as Zuffa attorneys did their due diligence on PRIDE assets. In a conference call with the media on Thursday,White denied that the deal had been closed.

However, two sources tell Sherdog.com that the deal has in fact been finalized, and that former PRIDE CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara has said as much to former DSE employees in the last 48 hours.

Citing Issues with several PRIDE fighter contracts, on Wednesday MMAWeekly.com reported that there is a class action lawsuit on behalf of PRIDE fighters looking to get out of their contracts. White, in a conversation with the media on Thursday afternoon, denied any knowledge of the dispute.

The tickets I contemplated getting for Manchester were £100 each, they were the front of the raised section. Floor seating went from £150 upwards. London may be better as the O2 Arena is bigger than the MEN, I think, by a couple of thousand. Then again its in London and everything there is expensive and sucks.

I'm still annoyed I know people that went to the Manchester show for free, highly annoying.
